The A1 Team Switzerland ( English stylization: A1Team.Switzerland ) was the Swiss national team in the A1GP series. It won the title in the 2007/2008 season and was runner-up in 2005/2006 and 2008/2009 .

history

A1 Team Switzerland in Kyalami 2009

The A1 Team Switzerland was founded by Max Welti ; The French team DAMS acted as racing team in the first season , Welti's own team Max Motorsport in the second and third seasons, and subsequently Boer Services from France.

In the first season , the Swiss were among the top teams. After the team scored its first points in ninth place in the sprint race at Brands Hatch with regular driver Neel Jani at the wheel, it achieved the first podium with second place in the sprint race at the race weekend at the EuroSpeedway Lausitz . Further podium results followed with third place in the sprint and second place in the main race in Estoril and third place in the main race in Eastern Creek . At the race weekend in Sepang , the team was on pole position for the first time , but Jani had to admit defeat to the French team on the last lap of the sprint race . The team also finished the main race in second place. After taking pole position again in Dubai , Jani scored her first victory in the sprint race; in the main race he was eliminated. With further podium finishes, a third place in the sprint and a second place in the main race in Durban as well as a second place in the sprint and a third place in the main race in Monterrey , the team finally secured the runner-up with 121 points.

"Seatholder" Max Welti (2007)

In the following season , the team slipped into the upper midfield. The highlight of the season was Jani's victory in the sprint race in Sepang. In total, the team achieved eleven points, including five fourth places (two for Jani, three for Sébastien Buemi ). It ended the season in eighth place overall with 50 points.

In the third season , the Swiss were the decisive team with Neel Jani as the regular driver. After two third places in the main races in Zandvoort and Brno , it provided the first highlight with a one-two in Sepang. Another three podium results (two second, one third) followed before another victory could be celebrated in the main race in Durban. After a third place in the sprint race in Mexico City , the fourth win of the season was achieved in the sprint race in Shanghai . The team started the last race weekend at Brands Hatch with a reassuring lead and achieved the preliminary decision in the championship fight with fourth place in the sprint race. It finished the main race in third place. A total of six pole positions underline the strength of the team, which ultimately became world champion with 168 points.

In the fourth season , the team presented itself as strong. With four victories (achieved in the sprint race in Sepang and the main races in Taupo , Kyalami and Portimão ) and another three podium results, all achieved by Jani, only Ireland had to admit defeat in the end . At the end of the day, 95 points were awarded, whereby four more are not included due to the rule of the cancellation results.

A1 Team Switzerland took part in all 39 race weekends of the A1GP series.

driver

A1 Team Switzerland fielded eight different drivers on race weekends, four of whom also took part in the races themselves. Romain Grosjean was also used in the official test in Le Castellet in 2005 .

The most successful driver of the team is Neel Jani, who has the most of all A1GP drivers with a total of 413 points and also heads the list of most individual victories with ten (five each in the sprint and main races). In addition, with 60 races, he holds the record for the most A1GP races.
