Sébastien Buemi (born October 31, 1988 in Aigle ) is a Swiss - Italian racing driver . He started from 2009 to 2011 for Scuderia Toro Rosso in Formula 1 . He has been a Formula 1 test and reserve driver at Red Bull Racing and Scuderia Toro Rosso since 2012 . Buemi has also been driving for Toyota Gazoo Racing in the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) since 2012 and for e.dams in the FIA Formula E Championship since 2014 . In 2014 he became the WEC driver world champion; In 2016 he won the Formula E drivers' title in 2018 and in 2019 he won the Le Mans 24-hour race .
Career
Beginnings in motorsport (1994-2005)
Buemi, who has both a Swiss and an Italian passport, drove his first kart races back in 1994 at the age of six . His greatest success in karting was the European and Italian runner-up in the junior kart championship in the ICA class in 2002.
In 2004 Buemi switched to formula racing and initially competed for Lars Kaufmann Motorsport in the German Formula BMW . He was immediately third in the championship. In 2005 Buemi stayed in the German Formula BMW and switched to Mücke Motorsport . He was involved in a title duel with Nico Hülkenberg until the last race . At the last race weekend in Hockenheim , Buemi suddenly braked heavily while in the lead during a safety car phase, whereupon Hülkenberg overtook him and was the first to finish the race. As a result, both received a 30-second penalty. Hülkenberg because of unauthorized overtaking under safety car conditions and Buemi because of his dangerous driving style. Buemi's sentence was later withdrawn, however, which initially made him a master. A protest on the part of Hülkenberg's Josef Kaufmann Racing team was granted by the DMSB appeals court, which ultimately gave Buemi's maneuver a 60-second penalty, whereupon Hülkenberg won the championship ahead of Buemi. He also took second place at the Formula BMW World Finals, whereupon the energy drink manufacturer Red Bull accepted him into its sponsorship program. Buemi also took part in a race in the Spanish Formula 3 championship for Racing Engineering .
Formula 3 Euro Series and GP2 Series (2006–2008)
In 2006 Buemi stayed with Mücke Motorsport and switched to the Formula 3 Euro Series . He won a race and was on the podium three times. He finished the season in twelfth place overall. With 31 to 32 points he narrowly defeated his teammate Jonathan Summerton . For Mücke he also came third in the Formula 3 Masters . At the Macau Grand Prix he came fourth for Carlin . Buemi also competed for Motopark Academy in some races of the Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup and the Northern European Formula Renault . He finished seventh with two wins in the Northern European Formula Renault and eleventh with one win in the Eurocup. In the winter of 2006/07 that followed , Buemi took part in twelve races in the A1GP series as one of three drivers for the Swiss team . Three fourth places were his best results. In 2007 Buemi contested his second season in the Formula 3 Euro Series for Mücke Motorsport. With three wins and another ten podium finishes, he narrowly lost the title to Romain Grosjean . With 95 to 8 points, he clearly decided the team-internal duel against Edoardo Piscopo . Buemi also made his debut in the GP2 series in the 2007 season and competed in eleven races for ART Grand Prix . At the end of the season he finished 21st overall in this series.
In the winter of 2008 Buemi switched to the Arden team and competed in the new GP2 Asia series . Buemi decided one race for himself and came second four times. With 37 to 61 points he was again runner-up behind Romain Grosjean. In 2008 , Buemi stayed with Arden in the GP2 series . At the same time, he became a test and reserve driver for the Formula 1 racing team Red Bull Racing . In the GP2 series, Buemi collected a total of 50 points in 2008, won two races and finished sixth in the championship standings.
Formula 1 (2009-2011)
In 2009 Buemi received a Formula 1 cockpit at Scuderia Toro Rosso , Red Bull's sister team. He became the first Swiss since Jean-Denis Delétraz in 1995 to contest a Formula 1 Grand Prix. His team-mate was Sébastien Bourdais , who drove for Toro Rosso last year. Buemi already managed to score two points in seventh place at his first Grand Prix in Australia . Two races later at the Chinese Grand Prix , Buemi crossed the finish line in eighth place again. In the further course of the season he initially scored no further points, as Toro Rosso developed more slowly compared to the other teams. However, Buemi regularly qualified in qualifying ahead of his team-mates Bourdais. Together with good performance in the race for the circumstances, it became clear after a few races that Buemi was able to keep up with his more experienced teammates. Thus Buemi was indirectly responsible for the dismissal of Bourdai. His new teammate from the Hungarian Grand Prix was Jaime Alguersuari , who, like Buemi, completed his first Formula 1 season and came out of the Red Bull funding program. In the last two races of the season in Brazil and Abu Dhabi , Buemi managed to score points again in seventh and eighth respectively. With six points, he finished his first season in 16th place overall.
In 2010 Buemi competed for Toro Rosso again. In free practice for the Chinese Grand Prix , Buemi made headlines with a strange accident in which both front wheels broke off when braking. Buemi left the car unharmed in the gravel bed. At the Canadian Grand Prix , Buemi took the lead in a race for the first time in his Formula 1 career and held it for one lap. He also achieved his best season position with an eighth place. At the end of the season he again finished 16th in the drivers' world championship. With eight to five points, he again prevailed against Alguersuari internally.
In 2011 Buemi completed his third Formula 1 season for Toro Rosso. With two eighth places in Australia and Hungary as the best results, he achieved a total of seven points. At the end of the season he was defeated by Alguersuari with 15 to 26 points and finished the season in 15th place overall. Buemi lost his Toro Rosso cockpit after three years. Alguersuari was also no longer employed.
Endurance World Championship and FIA Formula E Championship (since 2012)
In 2012 Buemi was signed by Toyota Racing for the new FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC). It was only used in the 24 Hours of Le Mans - the only race in which Toyota registered two vehicles. In 2012 he also competed for Boutsen Ginion Racing in a run in the European Le Mans Series (ELMS). In addition, Buemi remained employed by Red Bull. This season he took on the role of Formula 1 test and reserve driver for Red Bull Racing and its sister team Toro Rosso.
In 2013 , Toyota expanded its WEC commitment and consistently used the vehicle from Buemi, Anthony Davidson and Stéphane Sarrazin . The three won the Bahrain 6-hour race and stood on the podium three more times. Among other things, at the 24-hour race at Le Mans , where the trio came in second. The three drivers finished the world championship in third place. In addition, Buemi stayed with Red Bull and Toro Rosso in 2013 as a test and reserve driver.
In 2014 Buemi and Davidson got a new team-mate at Toyota in Nicolas Lapierre . The three drivers won the first two races at Silverstone and Spa-Francorchamps . In Le Mans and Austin they reached the third place. Then Lapierre left the team, so that Buemi and Davidson contested the second half of the season as a duo. The two won the next races in Fuji and Shanghai . In the eight races of the season they were only off the podium once. Buemi and Davidson won the drivers' world championship. It was the first world championship title for both of them. In addition, Buemi was again test and reserve driver for Red Bull and Toro Rosso in 2014 . In the 2014/15 season Buemi went for e.dams in the newly founded Formula E at the start. After a failure in the first race, he managed a podium finish with a third place at the second ePrix in Putrajaya . In the third race, the Punta del Este ePrix , he won for the first time. In the next race in Buenos Aires Buemi retired while in the lead. Buemi won the Monaco ePrix starting from pole position. This made him the first Formula E driver to win more than one race. At the last ePrix in London , where there were two races, Buemi won the first race. In the last race of the season he was fifth and missed winning the title by one point. With 143 to 144 points he was defeated by Nelson Piquet Jr. and finished second overall.
In 2015 Buemi stayed with Davidson at Toyota in the FIA World Endurance Championship. Kazuki Nakajima , who skipped a race, became her new teammate. A third place at the season opener at Silverstone was her only podium finish. Buemi and Davidson reached fifth place overall. In addition, Buemi will again compete for e.dams in Formula E in the 2015/16 season . He won the first race in Beijing from pole position and set the fastest race lap. In the Putrajaya ePrix that followed, Buemi fell back into midfield with technical problems in the lead and finally came in twelfth. He then won the ePrix in Punta del Este . At the subsequent Buenos Aires ePrix , Buemi achieved second place starting from last place. A race later in Mexico City , Buemi fought a close duel with Jérôme D'Ambrosio , which D'Ambrosio won. Buemi came second behind him. In the seventh race in Paris , he achieved third place. Then he won the Berlin ePrix . At the last race of the season in London , Buemi was in the title duel with Lucas di Grassi . Both started the race with the same number of points, at the start of which both drivers collided with each other. So both drivers tried to achieve the fastest race lap with the second car in order to win the championship with the bonus points. Buemi finally prevailed and won the FIA Formula E championship with 155 to 153 points ahead of di Grassi.
In 2016 Buemi, Davidson and Nakajima competed again for Toyota Gazoo Racing in the FIA World Endurance Championship. Third place in the Shanghai 6 Hours was the best result of the trio, which ended the World Championship in eighth place. Buemi also stayed with e.dams for the 2016/17 FIA Formula E Championship . As in the previous year, he won the first race, which this time took place in Hong Kong . He also won the ePrix that followed in Marrakech and Buenos Aires . This made him the first driver to win three Formula E races in a row. Although he was able to win three more races in the course of the season, he had to cede the driver's title to di Grassi after he was disqualified in Berlin and Montreal and the two races in New York because of a clash with the FIA World Endurance Championship had to leave out. As in 2015, he finished second overall.
In 2017 Buemi initially took part in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship (IWSC) 24-hour race at Daytona for Rebellion Racing . In the FIA Formula E Championship 2017/18 , he failed to win a season for the first time since the series began. With a second and three third places as the best results, he finished fourth in the drivers' championship at the end of the season.
In the 2018/19 season , Buemi competed for e.dams again, but the team now started with Nissan engines . With a win and three further podium results, all of which he achieved in the last four races, he finished second in the drivers' championship with 119 points at the end of the season. In addition, with a second and a third place, he finished fifth in the overall ranking of the voestalpine European Races , in which only podium places in the races on the European continent were considered.
Personal
Buemi's cousin Natacha Gachnang is also a racing driver, his grandfather Georges Gachnang took part in the 24-hour race at Le Mans in 1960 and manufactured racing and sports cars under the Établissements Cegga brand in the 1960s .
