report
background
After the Punta del Este ePrix , Sébastien Buemi led the drivers' standings with one point ahead of Lucas di Grassi and with 34 points ahead of Jérôme D'Ambrosio . In the team standings, Renault e.dams was two points ahead of ABT Schaeffler Audi Sport and 21 points ahead of Dragon Racing .
The route length increased by 72 meters to 2.479 km. The number of laps remained at 35 laps, increasing the race distance from 83.680 km to 86.200 km.
After he had to skip the race in Punta del Este due to an injury, Nick Heidfeld returned to the cockpit of the Mahindra team . Jacques Villeneuve and Venturi announced the split before the race. Mike Conway started for Villeneuve . There was another driver change at Team Aguri , Nathanaël Berthon was replaced by Salvador Durán , who was the driver of the Trulli team , which has since retired from the racing series, at the beginning of the season .
With António Félix da Costa , a former winner entered the race.
Sam Bird , di Grassi and Jean-Éric Vergne received a so-called FanBoost , they were allowed to increase the output of their second vehicle once to up to 200 kW and thus use up to 100 kilojoules of additional energy. For Bird it was the third FanBoost in the fourth race of the season, for di Grassi the first since the Moscow ePrix 2015 and for Vergne the second in a row.
training
In the first free practice session, Bird set the fastest time in 1: 09.913 minutes ahead of Daniel Abt and Nelson Piquet jr. Vergne had to skip training due to food poisoning , the Virgin team announced that he would also have to skip the race.
In the second free practice session, Buemi was fastest with a lap time of 1.08.771 minutes ahead of di Grassi and Nicolas Prost .
Qualifying
Qualifying started at 12:00 p.m. and took place in two groups of four drivers each and two groups of five drivers each, each group had 6 minutes to set a fast lap. Stéphane Sarrazin set the fastest time in 1: 09.236 minutes. After no substitute driver for the Virgin team had started in free practice, Vergne took part in qualifying contrary to previous statements and thus qualified for the race. Buemi, Durán and Bruno Senna made driving mistakes on their fast laps, so that they have to start the race from the end of the field.
The five fastest drivers then drove in the first five positions in the individual time trial called Superpole . Bird secured pole position and three points with a lap time of 1: 09.420 minutes. The other positions were occupied by Prost, Félix da Costa, Sarrazin and Conway.
run
The race lasted 35 laps.
At the start, the positions at the top remained unchanged. Abt lost two positions to the NEXTEV drivers on the first lap, Robin Frijns passed Conway. At the end of the first lap, Bird was leading in front of Prost, Félix da Costa, Sarrazin, Frijns, Conway, di Grassi, Piquet, Oliver Turvey and Abt. Buemi had already moved up from 18th to 15th and was on the start-finish straight past Simona de Silvestro .
On the first lap there was a collision between D'Ambrosio, Durán and Senna. Since the inner flank of the tire rubbed against the body, D'Ambrosio had to pit at the end of the second lap to change tires. During the pit stop, the impact wrench jammed on the wheel nut, which is why the mechanic was unable to loosen it before D'Ambrosio drove off. The mechanics pointed out this problem to him, whereupon he stopped after a few meters and the impact wrench could be loosened by force. With this pit stop he fell back to last place.
Di Grassi overtook Conway and thus took sixth place, immediately behind Turvey overtook Piquet. Also Loïc Duval overtook Abt and was new in tenth, behind Vergne went to Heidfeld over. On the third lap, Buemi easily passed Heidfeld on the straight and was 13th, Duval overtook Piquet. One lap later, Piquet also had to let Abt, Vergne, Buemi and Bruno Senna pass. Heidfeld also fell back further.
Di Grassi overtook Frijns and was fifth. Vergne and Buemi passed Abbot, Duval overtook Turvey. At the end of the sixth lap, Bird was leading ahead of Prost, Félix da Costa, Sarrazin, di Grassi, Frijns, Conway, Duval, Turvey and Vergne.
On the eighth lap, di Grassi took fourth place from Sarrazin. Buemi also managed to get past Vergne, Turvey and Duval, so that by the twelfth lap he was already in eighth place. The leading group moved closer together at this point, with di Grassi in fourth place just 1.5 seconds behind the leader. On lap 13 Félix da Costa overtook Prost and took second place.
Buemi overtook Conway and Frijns in quick succession and was sixth, he was around twelve seconds behind Bird.
Durán pitted at the end of lap 15 and gave up the race. At the end of the 17th lap, Conway, Senna and de Silvestro were the first drivers to come to the pits to change vehicles; the minimum time for the change was 57 seconds.
Da Costa got stuck on the track on lap 18 with a technical defect. He tried several times in vain to restart the vehicle and then got out. At the end of the lap, all the other drivers except Piquet drove into the pit lane. Prost had almost completely used up the available energy, so that he rolled very slowly through the pit lane and stopped di Grassi and, shortly afterwards, his teammate Buemi.
Prost braked and spun after his pit stop, but was able to resume the race. After the vehicle change, Bird led in front of di Grassi, Sarrazin, Buemi, Conway, Frijns, Prost, Duval, Senna and Heidfeld.
Buemi attacked Sarrazin and was already driving next to him when the race management decided to send the safety car onto the track to rescue Félix da Costa's vehicle . So Sarrazin and Buemi were able to catch up with Bird, which was more than ten seconds behind.
Sarrazin initially wrongly assumed a Full Course Yellow and drove at a speed of only 50 km / h, which is why Buemi complained massively to his pit crew via radio.
At the end of the 22nd lap the race was released again, Buemi immediately passed Sarrazin and was now in third place, Prost overtook Frijns. Conway spun on the 25th lap and dropped from ninth to 15th place.
Buemi shortened the gap to Bird and di Grassi. On the 28th lap he overtook di Grassi, who then complained by radio that his FanBoost had not worked. Buemi cut the gap on Bird and put him under pressure.
Heidfeld passed Senna and took eighth place. Bird managed to repel all Buemi's attacks, while Frijns fell behind Duval and Heifeld on the last lap. Bird won the race ahead of Buemi and di Grassi. It was Bird's first win of the season, Buemi took third and di Grassi fourth podium of the season. The remaining points were placed by Sarrazin, Prost, Duval, Heidfeld, Frijns, Turvey and Senna. The two points for the fastest race lap went to D'Ambrosio, who lapped and came in 16th.
In the overall standings Buemi extended his lead to di Grassi, Bird was now third. In the team ranking, the first three positions remained unchanged.
