It was the second London ePrix and the season finale of the second season of the championship. As in the previous season, two races were held as part of the London ePrix.
report
background
After the Berlin ePrix , Lucas di Grassi led the drivers' standings with one point ahead of Sébastien Buemi and 59 points ahead of Sam Bird . Only these three drivers had a mathematical chance of winning the title. In the team standings, Renault e.dams was eleven points ahead of ABT Schaeffler Audi Sport and 83 points ahead of DS Virgin . Besides these three teams, Dragon Racing also had a chance of winning the title.
Since Amlin was taken over by Mitsui Sumitomo Insurance in February of that year and renamed MS Amlin , Andretti entered the London ePrix with the name MS Amlin Andretti . This was the last time Aguri competed in the FIA Formula E Championship.
After he had to skip the race in Berlin because of a deadline collision with the DTM , António Félix da Costa returned to Aguri's cockpit.
With Bird and Buemi two former winners entered the race.
Buemi, di Grassi and Nick Heidfeld received a so-called FanBoost for the first race , they were allowed to increase the output of their second vehicle once to up to 200 kW and thus use up to 100 kilojoules of additional energy. For Buemi it was the third FanBoost in a row, for di Grassi and Heidfeld the fourth of the season.
In the second race, Buemi and di Grassi and Stéphane Sarrazin again received the FanBoost . For di Grassi it was the fifth, for Buemi the fourth and for Sarrazin the third FanBoost this season.
Race day one
training
In the first free practice session, Nicolas Prost set the fastest time in 1: 25.399 minutes ahead of Loïc Duval and Buemi. Robin Frijns had to interrupt training after an accident .
In the second free practice session, Buemi set the fastest time with a lap time of 1: 23.171 minutes ahead of Daniel Abt and Prost.
Qualifying
Qualifying started at 12:00 p.m. and took place in two groups of five drivers and two groups of four drivers, each group had 10 minutes to set a fast lap. Qualifying was interrupted by Jean-Éric Vergne in the first group after an accident . At the beginning of the second group it started to rain lightly. After an accident at Sarrazin, qualifying for the second group was also interrupted, after which it began to rain heavily, so that the drivers of the later groups had no chance of achieving the lap times of the first drivers. Qualifying for the fourth group was also interrupted after a driving error by Mike Conway . Prost set the fastest time in 1: 23.247 minutes.
The five fastest drivers then drove in the first five positions in the individual time trial called Superpole . Prost secured pole position with a lap time of 1: 27.192 minutes and thus three points. The other positions were occupied by Bruno Senna , Oliver Turvey , Frijns and Vergne, who did not take part in the pole shootout after his accident.
run
The race lasted 33 laps. At the start, the positions at the top remained unchanged. In midfield, the two championship leaders Buemi and di Grassi worked their way up quickly, at the end of the fifth lap they were already in seventh and ninth place.
Prost, Senna and Turvey separated from the rest of the field, while Frijns, Vergne, Bird, di Grassi, Abt and Buemi drove directly behind one another. Abbot blocked several attacks by Buemi.
On lap 13 di Grassi overtook Bird, who shortly thereafter also had to let Abt and Buemi pass. On the 16th lap, Buemi overtook Abt and was now directly behind di Grassi. At this point, Senna drove the fastest lap of the race to date. At the end of lap 16, he was the first driver to pit to change vehicles, followed by Turvey, Bird, Jérôme D'Ambrosio , Félix da Costa and Conway. All other drivers changed their vehicle on the following lap.
After the pit stops, Prost was in front of Senna, Turvey, Vergne, Frijns, di Grassi, Buemi, Abt, Félix da Costa and Bird. Di Grassi overtook Frijns on the 19th lap, one lap later Buemi also passed him. At this point the first raindrops fell. Abbot also attacked Frijns, and the vehicles came into contact. Abbot lost control of his car and hit the barrier, breaking his left front suspension. The vehicle was thrown back onto the track and hit Frijns' car on the left rear wheel, where the suspension also broke. The safety car was sent out to rescue the two vehicles . This significantly reduced the gaps between the individual vehicles, while third-placed Turvey had already been 30 seconds behind Prost.
The race was opened again on lap 24. Prost and Senna quickly pulled away again, behind which Turvey stopped the following pilots. Di Grassi attacked Vergne several times, but he defended himself. On lap 26 there was a contact between the vehicles, both then continued their journey with several seconds lost without losing positions. Di Grassi's front wing was damaged during this contact. Buemi then used his FanBoost , but di Grassi picked up his attack. The following drivers caught up with the two.
One lap later, despite the damage to his car, di Grassi drove the fastest lap of the race to date, he and Buemi caught up with Turvey and Vergne again. Buemi attacked again di Grassi, who defended his position. Behind the two, Bird overtook Félix da Costa. Sarrazin, at this point in 13th place, now drove the fastest lap.
Vergne attacked Turvey in the battle for third place, who blocked the attack. The vehicles came into contact, but this had no consequences. Nelson Piquet Jr. drove the fastest lap of the race. Buemi continued his attacks on di Grassi, but he defended himself every time. Turvey slipped into the barrier on lap 31. Yellow flags were waved at the scene of the accident, but Bird overtook Buemi at this point. Buemi complained with a show of hands to Bird, who stayed ahead of Buemi and blocked his attacks in the following round. A few meters from the finish line, Bird, whose residual energy was less than one percent, suddenly slowed down and Buemi hit him in the rear. Both drove on, Buemi and Félix da Costa also passed Bird before the finish line.
Prost won the race ahead of Senna and Vergne. The remaining points were placed by di Grassi, Buemi, Félix da Costa, Bird, D'Ambrosio, Conway and Sarrazin. The two points for the fastest race lap went to Piquet. Nick Heidfeld and Simona de Silvestro subsequently received drive-through penalties, which were converted into 50-second time penalties, so that both fell out of the points. Heidfeld had used his FanBoost twice, de Silvestro exceeded the maximum amount of energy of 28 kWh.
Di Grassi thus extended Buemi's lead in the overall standings to three points, Prost was new third. In the team standings, the first three positions remained unchanged, but Renault e.Dams was now 37 points ahead. Thus, on the second day of the race, eleven points were enough for the team to defend the team championship title.
Race day two
training
In the first free practice session, Buemi set the fastest time with a lap time of 1: 22.393 minutes ahead of Prost and Vergne. Training had to be interrupted after teammates Félix da Costa and Ma collided. Simona de Silvestro was driving slowly after a suspension break due to contact with the track barrier, whereupon Ma braked significantly earlier before a bend and Félix da Costa hit him.
The second free practice had to be canceled due to problems with the power supply, the vehicles could not be recharged in time after the first free practice.
Qualifying
Qualifying started at 12:00 p.m. and took place in two groups of five drivers and two groups of four drivers, each group had 10 minutes to set a fast lap. Buemi set the fastest time in 1: 22.106 minutes.
The five fastest drivers then drove in the first five positions in the individual time trial called Superpole . Buemi secured pole position with a lap time of 1: 22.033 minutes and thus three points, so di Grassi and Buemi were tied on points before the race. The other positions were occupied by Prost, di Grassi, Heidfeld and Turvey.
After qualifying, Duval was moved ten positions back because the gearbox on his vehicle was changed.
run
The second race also lasted 33 laps.
At the start, the positions at the top remained unchanged, when braking into turn three , di Grassi overtook Prost and drove into Buemi, both vehicles slipped into the run-off zone . The front suspension of di Grassi's vehicle broke and the front wing tore off, Buemi continued the race in 13th place without a rear wing. The race management sent the safety car out onto the track. Prost led before Heidfeld, Abt, Turvey, Bird, Vergne, Piquet, Conway, D'Ambrosio and Senna. Di Grassi drove his damaged vehicle to the pits, where he changed the vehicle. The mechanics tuned the car to the qualifying trim with maximum downforce, in the hope that di Grassi could thus achieve the fastest race lap.
The race was reopened at the end of the second lap. Buemi was shown the fried egg flag shortly before , he came into the pits at the end of the second lap and also changed his vehicle, which was converted to maximum downforce. Bird overtook teammate Vergne shortly after the restart and Turvey shortly afterwards. Vergne passed Turvey too. Di Grassi drove the fastest lap of the race to date, Buemi was still in the pits after changing vehicle.
Bird slowed down and had to park his vehicle on the track. The race management decided again to send the safety car out onto the track in order to be able to recover the car, at this point di Grassi was again on a fast lap. He asked his team by radio whether the first vehicle could be repaired and used again. The team denied this, pointing out that the first vehicle was under parc fermé conditions after the vehicle change . Di Grassi drove into the pits again and waited there for some time before restarting the race.
The race was reopened at the end of lap nine. A collision occurred in midfield when Frijns ran into D'Ambrosio, who had to let Félix da Costa pass shortly before. The rear wing on D'Ambrosio's vehicle and the front wing on Frijn's vehicle were damaged. At that time, Buemi drove his second car out onto the track for the first time. Duval attacked Frijns, pushing him against the barrier. The suspension at Frijns broke and he was eliminated. The safety car was sent out again and Buemi drove back into the pits.
The race was reopened on lap 14, and Buemi then drove out again. Di Grassi also drove back onto the track and was right in front of Buemi, who then pitted again. Abt overtook Heidfeld on lap 17 and was now in second place. Vergne also attacked Heidfeld, but he blocked the attack.
On lap 18, all drivers changed their vehicles except for Conway, who drove into the pits one lap later. Prost led in front of Abt, Vergne, Heidfeld, Turvey, Félix da Costa, Piquet, D'Ambrosio, Duval and Senna. Buemi hit the track again and set the fastest lap of the race. Di Grassi drove onto the track again just before Buemi.
D'Ambrosio and Duval passed Piquet in quick succession. Buemi again set the fastest lap of the race. Shortly thereafter, Piquet lost further positions to Senna, Sarrazin and Conway. Ma Qinghua received a drive-through penalty for driving too fast in the pit lane. Di Grassi and Buemi drove out again, di Grassi used his FanBoost , but made a driving error and was therefore slower than Buemi.
Turvey also slowed down on lap 29 and had to let several drivers overtake. Di Grassi made another attempt to achieve the fastest race lap, but was again slower than Buemi - this time by 0.051 seconds. Since his second car ran out of energy, di Grassi pitted and gave up the race. Conway parked his vehicle on the side of the road. Buemi again set the fastest lap of the race.
Prost won ahead of Abt and D'Ambrosio. The remaining points placed were occupied by Duval, Sarrazin, Senna, Heidfeld, Vergne, Piquet and Turvey. Vergne, Heidfeld and Félix da Costa received drive-through penalties retrospectively, which were converted into 50-second time penalties because they exceeded the maximum energy consumption of 28 kWh and so fell back from places three to five. In addition, Vergne received another one-second time penalty for an unsafe release and Félix da Costa received a second drive-through penalty, which was converted into a 50-second time penalty for overtaking off-track. The two points for the fastest race lap went to Buemi, who thus won the championship with a two point lead. Renault e.Dams won the team classification.
