report
background
After the Paris ePrix , Lucas di Grassi led the drivers' standings with eleven points ahead of Sébastien Buemi and with 44 points ahead of Sam Bird . In the team standings, Renault e.dams was seven points ahead of ABT Schaeffler Audi Sport and 53 points ahead of Dragon Racing .
Before the race it became known that the Moscow ePrix planned for immediately after the Berlin ePrix had been canceled without replacement. This meant that only nine drivers now had a theoretical chance of winning the driver's title.
Since the hangars and the covered main hall of Berlin-Tempelhof Airport , where the race took place in the previous year , were needed for refugee registration and accommodation from the end of 2015 due to the persistently high number of refugees , the Berlin ePrix was used for 2016 locked out. On February 15, 2016, the Formula E organizers announced that the race would take place on a new racetrack around Strausberger Platz in the Berlin districts of Friedrichshain and Mitte .
When Team Aguri there was again a driver change. António Félix da Costa , who was unable to take part in the race because of the DTM race in Spielberg , was replaced by René Rast , who made his debut in the FIA Formula E Championship.
With Jérôme D'Ambrosio , a former winner entered the race.
Buemi, Nick Heidfeld and Stéphane Sarrazin received a so-called FanBoost , they were allowed to increase the output of their second vehicle to up to 200 kW and thus use up to 100 kilojoules of additional energy. For Buemi it was the second FanBoost in a row, for Heidfeld the third and for Sarrazin the second of the season.
training
In the first free practice session Buemi set the best time with a lap time of 0: 57.648 minutes ahead of Oliver Turvey and di Grassi.
Nelson Piquet Jr. was fastest in 0: 57.909 minutes in second free practice ahead of Bird and Jean-Éric Vergne . Training had to be interrupted by Sarrazin after an accident.
Qualifying
Qualifying started at 12:00 p.m. and took place in three groups of five drivers and one group of three drivers, each group had 10 minutes to set a fast lap. Buemi set the best time in 0: 57.322 minutes.
The five fastest drivers then drove in the first five positions in the individual time trial called Superpole . Vergne secured pole position with a lap time of 0: 57.811 minutes and thus three points. It was the third consecutive pole position for a DS Virgin driver. The other positions were occupied by Buemi, Daniel Abt , Bruno Senna and Heidfeld.
After qualifying, several drivers were excluded from the ranking: At Senna and Heidfeld, the tire pressure on their vehicles was too low. Also Jérôme D'Ambrosio and Sarrazin were disqualified.
run
The race lasted 48 laps.
At the start, Buemi took the lead ahead of Vergne, Abt, Bird, Prost and di Grassi. Behind were Piquet and Turvey, who both collided at the exit of the first corner, but were able to continue with their damaged vehicles. Duval and Robin Frijns completed the first ten . In the back of the field, Senna stopped and both continued their journey with damaged vehicles. At the end of the lap Senna drove into the pits to have his defective front wing repaired.
On the second lap, Vergne overtook Buemi and took the lead, but Buemi passed him again four laps later. Meanwhile, the race management showed Rast and Piquet the black flag with an orange dot , as their vehicles showed obvious damage. Buemi drove the fastest lap of the race to date and took the lead. Bird was also shown the black flag with an orange dot, as its front wing was damaged after a slight collision at the start of the race, shortly afterwards Turvey also saw the flag. Frijns overtook Duval, shortly afterwards de Silvestro also passed Duval.
On the eleventh lap, Abbot passed Vergne and was now in second place, followed by Prost, di Grassi, Frijns, Simona de Silvestro , Duval, Mike Conway and Heidfeld. Prost put Vergne under pressure and attacked him, but he defended himself against the attacks. Meanwhile, Heidfeld continued his race to catch up and overtook Conway, Duval and de Silvestro in quick succession.
On lap 21, Vergne damaged the front wing on a pylon in the chicane. In lap 24 he lost the entire front wing when he made contact with the pylon again and then with the boundary of the route and shortly afterwards was also shown the black flag with an orange dot, while he had to let Prost pass. Just like Buemi, Abt, Prost, Frijns, Heidfeld, de Silvestro, Ma, Bird and Rast, he pitted to change vehicles. D'Ambrosio had already changed vehicles a lap earlier. The minimum time to change vehicles was 62 seconds.
On lap 25, di Grassi, Duval, Conway and Sarrazin then drove to change vehicles, another lap later Senna. After the pit stops, Buemi led in front of Abt, Prost, di Grassi, Vergne, Frijns, Heidfeld, Duval, de Silvestro and Conway. Senna spun in the back of the field and the race management announced a Full Course Yellow shortly afterwards to clear the track of the debris from Vergne's front wing.
After the race was reopened, di Grassi caught up with Prost and put him under pressure. Meanwhile, Buemi drove the fastest lap of the race. Heidfeld used his FanBoost to attack Frijns, who however successfully defended himself. Duval received a drive-through penalty for using too much energy on the first vehicle. Sarrazin used his FanBoost and caught up with de Silvestro, which he overtook shortly afterwards. However, he left out the chicane. He then let de Silvestro pass again.
Di Grassi overtook Prost on lap 40 and was now in third place behind his team-mate Abt. Buemi again set the fastest lap of the race, but one lap later Senna drove even faster. On the 42nd lap, Duval lost control of his vehicle, hit the track barrier and retired. The race management sent the safety car out onto the track to rescue the vehicle . The race was reopened for the last two laps. Abbot received instructions to let di Grassi pass because of his championship chances, but stayed ahead of him.
Buemi won ahead of Abt and di Grassi. The remaining points were placed by Prost, Vergne, Frijns, Heidfeld, Conway, de Silvestro and Sarrazin. The two points for the fastest race lap went to Senna.
Buemi thus shortened the gap to di Grassi in the overall standings to one point. Bird remained third, but now with 59 points behind with 60 points still to be awarded, he only had a theoretical chance for the title. In the team standings, Renault e.dams increased their lead over ABT Schaeffler Audi Sport to 11 points, with DS Virgin taking third place. Since a maximum of 96 points could be achieved in the team classification in the last two races, DS Virgin with 83 points behind, just like the fourth-placed team Dragon Racing with 90 points behind, also had theoretical chances of winning the title.
