The Beijing ePrix 2015 (officially: 2015 FIA Formula E SWUSP Beijing ePrix ) took place on October 24th on the Beijing Formula E race track in Beijing and was the opening race of the 2015/16 FIA Formula E championship . It was the second Beijing ePrix.

The Beijing ePrix 2015 was the first race of the FIA Formula E championship in which the teams were allowed to use their vehicle developed on the basis of the Spark Renault SRT_01E . As before, each driver had two cars available for the ePrix and had to use both cars during the race as they only had a limited range. Compared to the previous season, the maximum power of the vehicles in racing operations has been increased from 150 kW to 170 kW.
Compared to the previous year, the route has been changed slightly. The first chicane was removed, the number of corners was reduced from 20 to 17. The route was shortened by 14 meters. In addition, the second chicane was made narrower so that the vehicles had to slow down more here. The number of laps has been increased by one lap to 27, increasing the race distance from 86.325 km to 89.414 km.
With Lucas di Grassi , a former winner entered the race.
Sam Bird , Nelson Piquet Jr. and Oliver Turvey received a so-called FanBoost , they were allowed to increase the output of their second vehicle up to 200 kW and thus use up to 100 kilojoules of additional energy.
As in the previous year, additional training took place the day before the race. This should enable the teams to conduct a 30-minute function test of the newly developed drive trains at an early stage.
The Trulli Formula E team missed the technical approval of the vehicles because the engines and inverters were not approved by the Chinese customs . Therefore, the team did not take part in the race.

In the first free practice session, Sébastien Buemi set the fastest time with a lap time of 1: 36.991 minutes ahead of Nicolas Prost and Loïc Duval . In the second free practice, di Grassi set the fastest time in 1: 37.279 minutes, ahead of Daniel Abt and Stéphane Sarrazin . A few minutes before the end of the training session, Simona de Silvestro hit the barrier with her vehicle and the training session was stopped.
Qualifying
Qualifying started at 12:00 p.m. and took place in four groups. As only 18 vehicles took part, the field was drawn into two groups with five and two groups with four drivers. Each driver had 6 minutes to set a fast lap. Buemi was fastest with a lap time of 1: 37.448 minutes.
The five fastest drivers then drove in the first five positions in the individual time trial called Superpole . Buemi secured pole position with a lap time of 1: 37.297 minutes and thus three points. The other positions were occupied by Prost, Nick Heidfeld , di Grassi and Jean-Éric Vergne .

The race lasted 26 laps.
Buemi stayed in front at the start, Heidfeld passed Prost and was now in second place. Bruno Senna and Duval overtook Sarrazin, who fell back to eighth place. Senna passed Vergne shortly afterwards. Prost braked himself on the second lap so that di Grassi overtook him. On lap three, de Silvestro braked himself and hit the barrier. A Full Course Yellow was declared to rescue the vehicle , the drivers had to reduce their speed to 50 km / h, and overtaking was prohibited.
Bird braked himself shortly after the restart on lap four and fell back to ninth place. Vergne and Duval passed Senna on the ninth lap, followed by Sarrazin and Bird one lap later. On lap twelve, Vergne Duval attacked, there was a contact. Bird took advantage of the situation to pass his teammate Vergne. Sarrazin also overtook Vergne a few corners later.
Bird and Vergne had to save energy towards the middle of the race and lost several places. On lap 13, all drivers except Duval, Jérôme D'Ambrosio , Turvey, Nathanaël Berthon and Piquet pitted to change vehicles. Di Grassi and Prost passed Heidfeld with a faster pit stop, but Heidfeld was able to overtake Prost again shortly afterwards. Abt drove over to a mechanic during the pit stop, for which he subsequently received a ten-second penalty. One lap later, the other drivers changed their vehicles.
António Félix da Costa collided with Jacques Villeneuve shortly after changing his vehicle . The race was over for Félix da Costa. There was another Full Course Yellow to rescue the vehicle. This gave the drivers who came later to change vehicles an advantage, as pilots were only allowed to drive 50 km / h on the route. After the pit stops, Buemi was ahead of di Grassi, Heidfeld, Prost, Duval, D'Ambrosio, Turvey, Berthon, Piquet and Bird.
At the restart, Prost overtook Heidfeld again and was able to pull away from him in the following laps and catch up with di Grassi. Piquet parked his car on the track on lap 17 with a technical defect. He managed to continue the race shortly afterwards after restarting the car, but fell back to last place. Robin Frijns passed Sarrazin on lap 18. At Prost, one of the fastenings on the rear wing came loose, but he was able to continue the journey almost unchanged and put di Grassi under pressure. The race management decided to show him the black flag with an orange dot and he had to pit. However, Prost initially ignored the instruction, but after a lengthy radio discussion with his team drove into the pit and gave up the race.
Shortly afterwards Frijns passed Vergne. Duval caught up with Heidfeld and put him under pressure. D'Ambrosio caught up with both of them and attacked Duval, which nearly resulted in a collision. Heidfeld managed to repel all of Duval's attacks. Abt dropped from ninth to eleventh place due to the ten-second penalty.
Buemi won ahead of di Grassi and Heidfeld. The remaining points were placed by Duval, D'Ambrosio, Turvey, Bird, Berthon, Sarrazin and Frijns. The two points for the fastest race lap went to Buemi, who was the first and only driver in the history of the FIA Formula E Championship to achieve the full 30 points in one race. In the following seasons there was only one point for the fastest race lap.
Buemi was thus also in the lead in the overall standings ahead of di Grassi and Heidfeld. In the team standings , Renault e.dams took first place ahead of Dragon Racing and ABT Schaeffler Audi Sport .
