The Beijing ePrix 2014 (officially: 2014 FIA Formula E Evergrande Spring Beijing ePrix ) took place on September 13th at the Beijing Formula E circuit in Beijing and was the first race of the 2014/15 FIA Formula E Championship . It was the first Beijing ePrix.
report
background
The Beijing ePrix 2014 was the first race of the FIA Formula E Championship . The field of drivers mainly consisted of former Formula 1 drivers and active or former drivers of the FIA World Endurance Championship . All teams used the chassis Spark-Renault SRT 01E of Dallara , electric motors of McLaren and tires from Michelin . Each driver had two cars available for the ePrix and had to use both cars during the race as they only had a limited range.
The Beijing Olympic Green Circuit was a temporary street circuit and led on public streets around the Bird's Nest -called Olympic Stadium .
António Félix da Costa , who was hired by Amlin Aguri as a regular driver, was unable to take part in the race due to an overlap with the DTM race at the Lausitzring , instead Takuma Satō started .
From July 1, 2014, fans could vote for exactly one driver via the official Formula E website; from September 1, this should also be possible via the official Formula E app . Lucas di Grassi , Katherine Legge and Bruno Senna received a so-called FanBoost , they were allowed to increase the power of their car for a maximum of five seconds from 150 kW (204 PS) to 180 kW (245 PS) during the race.
On September 12th, the day before the race, there was a 20-minute training session in which each driver was allowed to do a maximum of five laps on the course. In this way, the teams should be able to run smoothly, since in the case of a fundamental technical problem with a vehicle it had to be expected that a repair might not be feasible by the race that was taking place on the same day.
training
The first free practice started at 8:15 a.m. and lasted 45 minutes. Di Grassi was the fastest driver with a lap time of 1: 41.937 minutes, ahead of Sébastien Buemi and Sam Bird .
The second free practice started at 10:30 a.m. and lasted 30 minutes. Senna set the fastest lap with 1: 41.341 minutes, followed by di Grassi and Ho-Pin Tung .
Qualifying
Qualifying started at 12:00 p.m. and took place in four groups of five drivers each, each group had 10 minutes to set a fast lap. Nicolas Prost set the fastest time in 1: 42.200 minutes, followed by di Grassi and Daniel Abt . The top 10 were completed by Karun Chandhok , Franck Montagny , Nick Heidfeld , Jaime Alguersuari , Charles Pic , Buemi and Nelson Piquet jr.
Stéphane Sarrazin , Senna and Jarno Trulli did not set any time. Senna's car had technical problems with the battery, and Sarrazin's vehicle also had a technical defect. Trulli hit the wall with his car.
After qualifying, several penalties were issued: Montagny was moved back three starting positions because he had left the pits and entered the fast lane when the pit lights were still red. Buemi, Sarrazin, Tung, Michela Cerruti and Trulli were moved back ten places because their vehicles had to be changed.
run
The race lasted 25 laps. Tung started out of the pits after changing the gearbox, but due to technical problems, he only started the race two laps behind. Chandhok, Sarrazin and Trulli initially stopped at the start of the formation lap, but followed the field and started the race from their starting positions. Here Trulli stopped again and had to give up the race.
Prost won the starting duel, Heidfeld passed Chandhok on the outside in the first corner. Senna parked his vehicle on the track with a defective front suspension immediately after Turn 2 , after driving over the curbs on the inside of the curve. The race stewards started an investigation because they had suspected a collision between Senna and Satō, but this was discontinued. On the second lap the safety car came out so that Senna's car could be recovered. At this point, Prost was ahead of di Grassi, Abt, Heidfeld, Chandhok, Alguersuari, Montagny, Bird, Pic and Piquet.
At the restart at the end of lap four, the positions at the top remained unchanged, Montagny and Bird passed Alguersuari shortly afterwards and finished sixth and seventh, Oriol Servià and Satō overtook Piquet. On the sixth lap, Buemi lost part of his rear wing and had to pit for repairs. After a lengthy repair stop, he resumed the race, but when exiting the pit lane he ran over the white line and was punished with a drive-through penalty. Piquet initially passed Satō again and shortly afterwards passed Servià again.
Di Grassi and Abt caught up with Prost, but couldn't get close enough to attempt to overtake. Montagny was the fastest driver in the field at the time and narrowed the gap to Chandhok. In the tenth lap he passed him and was now in fifth place. Satō had to park his vehicle with problems with the battery, but was able to resume the race several laps behind.
Towards the middle of the race, the first seven drivers moved back into a group, as the drivers in the front seats had to save energy. At the end of the thirteenth lap, all drivers in this group, with the exception of Bird, pitted to change vehicles. Bird took the lead from Pic, who also fell by the wayside. Heidfeld passed di Grassi and Abt at the stop, while Abt also fell behind Montagny. One lap later, Bird and Pic came to the pits to change vehicles, Bird went back onto the track behind Abt.
After the scheduled change of vehicles, Prost was around four seconds ahead of Heidfeld, followed by di Grassi, Montagny, Abt, Bird, Chandhok, Pic, Piquet and Servià. Cerruti received a drive-through penalty because she had fallen short of the minimum pit stop time when changing vehicles. Buemi gave up the race at that time. Even Katherine Legge was given a drive-through penalty because she had crossed the white line at the exit of pit lane.
Chandhok passed Bird on lap 19 to finish sixth. Heidfeld gradually narrowed the gap to Prost and was less than a second behind the leader for the first time on lap 20. Servià, Sarrazin and Jérôme D'Ambrosio passed Piquet one after the other.
On the last lap Heidfeld was within striking distance for the first time to start an attack on Prost, his teammate at Rebellion Racing in the FIA World Endurance Championship . When approaching turn 20 , Heidfeld drove on the straight to the left of Prost. Prost pulled to the left immediately before the braking point of the curve so that the front wheels of the vehicles touched. The wheel suspensions of both cars broke. Heidfeld turned, drove his vehicle sideways over the curbs and took off. His vehicle crashed into the boundary on the outside of the curve and rolled over several times, but Heidfeld was uninjured and freed himself from the wreck under his own power. Prost stopped with his no longer steerable car in the run-out zone of the curve. Prost was awarded by the race stewards for causing this collision with a backward transfer of ten places on the starting grid of the next race.
Di Grassi won ahead of Montagny and Abt, who, however, received a drive-through penalty after the race, which was converted into a 57-second penalty because he had used 28.2 kWh instead of the permitted 28 kWh. Alguersuari and Legge also received a drive-through penalty for the same offense, which was converted into a 57-second penalty. Third place went to Bird.
The remaining points placed were occupied by Pic, Chandhok, D'Ambrosio, Servià, Piquet, Sarrazin and the dept. The two points for the fastest race lap went to Satō.
Di Grassi was thus also in the lead in the overall standings from Montagny and Bird. In the team standings , Andretti Autosport took first place ahead of Abt and Virgin .
After the race it became known that di Grassi had not used his FanBoost because he was afraid that it would consume more than the permitted 28 kWh of energy. Legge had also not used her FanBoost for the same reason, Senna dropped out before he could use the FanBoost .
