Karun Chandhok (born January 19, 1984 in Chennai , Tamil Nadu ) is an Indian racing driver . In 2010 and 2011 he took part in a total of eleven Formula 1 races. In 2014/15 he started in the FIA Formula E championship .

Career

Beginnings in motorsport (2000–2006)

Chandhok began his motorsport career in 2000 in the Indian Formula Maruti . He won seven races, finished every race on the podium and won the championship title. In 2001 he started the Asian Formula 2000 and won the championship title again straight away. In 2002 Chandhok moved to Europe and competed for T-Sport in the national class of the British Formula 3 Championship . He finished a few races on the podium and finished sixth overall at the end of the season. In 2003 he stayed with T-Sport in the national class of British Formula 3 and improved to third place with seven wins. In 2004 Chandhok rose to the regular championship of British Formula 3 with T-Sport and scored some points. He left the British Formula 3 three rounds before the end of the season and finally finished 14th in the championship. He then started for RC Motorsport at the last race weekend of the World Series by Nissan and reached 16th place overall in this series. In 2005, Chandhok only started five races in the RC Motorsport championship, which has now been renamed Formula Renault 3.5 . Without scoring any points, he finished 29th in the drivers' championship.

After Chandhok competed for the Indian team in three races in the following winter in the 2005/06 season of the A1GP , he competed for the E-Rain team in the newly created Asian Formula Renault V6 . Chandhok dominated the season, won seven out of twelve races and won the championship title.

GP2 series (2007-2009)

Chandhok for iSport International at Silverstone 2008

In 2007 , Chandhok started for Durango in the GP2 series . He achieved his first GP2 victory in the sprint race in Spa-Francorchamps . This made him the first Indian to win a race in the GP2 series. While his team-mate Borja García was tenth overall at the end of the season, Chandhok was in 15th place. In November, Chandhok gained his first experience in a Formula 1 car on two days of testing for Red Bull Racing .

Chandhok finished seventh for Ocean Racing Technology in Monaco in 2009

In the first season of the GP2 Asia series , Chandhok joined iSport International , the 2007 GP2 championship team in 2008 , and became a teammate of Bruno Senna . With a third place as the best result, he finished the season in 13th place overall. In the regular GP2 season , he stayed with Senna at iSport. Chandhok won the sprint race at the Hockenheimring and achieved tenth place in the overall standings with two further podium finishes. Internally, the duel against Senna, who was second, lost with 31 to 64 points.

Chandhok switched to the new Ocean Racing Technology team in the 2009 GP2 series . His teammate was Álvaro Parente . For his new team, Chandhok also contested the last race weekend of the GP2 Asia Series season 2008/2009 , on which he remained without points. In the regular GP2 series he was on the podium once with a third place. However, he did not manage to maintain his overall placement and he finished the season in 18th place overall. Internally, he lost to Parente with 10 to 30 points.

Formula 1 (2010-2011)

Chandhok for HRT at the 2010 Malaysian Grand Prix

In 2010 he initially received a Formula 1 cockpit at the new HRT racing team . Senna became his teammate again. His former iSport team boss Paul Jackson praised the team for this driver choice, as the two drivers had been very committed to the team during their joint GP2 season. On his first race weekend in Bahrain , he only drove a few laps. At first he had to skip practice completely and made his first experiences with the HRT car in qualifying. In the race he was eliminated after just one lap with a spin. In the second race in Australia he crossed the finish line for the first time in 14th place, five laps behind. It was also the best season position for him. Chandhok managed to keep up with his teammate and left him behind a few times. After the tenth race, Chandhok was replaced by Sakon Yamamoto at HRT . Although he stayed with HRT, there were no further races. At the end of the season he finished 22nd in the world championship.

In 2011 , Chandhok was one of the test drivers for Team Lotus . In this role he took part in some Friday training sessions. In addition, Chandhok started as a substitute for Jarno Trulli at the German Grand Prix as a driver. During the season, another race was considered at his home Grand Prix in India , but it was not used because the team relied on the experienced regular drivers in the fight in the constructors' championship. He finished the season in 28th place overall.

Endurance, GT, Formula E (since 2012)

In 2012 , Chandhok took part in the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) for JRM Racing . He competed in an HPD ARX-03a in the LMP1 class. He shared the vehicle with David Brabham and Peter Dumbreck . The trio reached fifth position three times in the world championship, including in the 2012 24 Hours of Le Mans , in which the three finished sixth overall. The three finished the season in tenth place in the drivers' world championship.

After JRM Racing withdrew from the WEC, Chandhok switched to the FIA GT Series in 2013 . He initially drove four race weekends for Seyffarth Motorsport and then at an event for the Vita4one Racing Team . With a fourth place as the best result, he was 13th overall. He also held for Murphy Prototypes in the 24-hour race at Le Mans in part.

In 2014, Chandhok initially took part in two races of the European Le Mans Series (ELMS) and the 24-hour race of Le Mans for Murphy Prototypes . Chandhok then received a cockpit from Mahindra Racing for the 2014/15 season of the newly founded FIA Formula E Championship . His team mate was again Bruno Senna. In the first race, the Beijing ePrix , he finished fifth. It was his best result of the season. He finished the season in 17th place overall. Internally he was defeated by Senna with 18 to 40 points.
