Reports

background

After the Chinese Grand Prix , Jenson Button led the drivers' standings with ten points from Nico Rosberg and eleven points from Fernando Alonso . McLaren-Mercedes led the constructors' championship with 19 points ahead of Ferrari and with 36 points ahead of Red Bull-Renault .

With Michael Schumacher (six times), Alonso, Felipe Massa and Button (once each), four former winners will compete in this Grand Prix, which is the European start of this season.

The Spanish Grand Prix was held for the 40th time in 2010 as part of the Formula 1 World Championship, the 20th of which was on the Circuit de Catalunya.

training

In the first free practice session, Lewis Hamilton set the fastest lap ahead of his teammate Button and Mercedes driver Schumacher. Christian Klien competed for HRT for the first time as a Friday test driver in the first training session and was immediately faster than regular driver Bruno Senna . In the second Friday practice session, Sebastian Vettel took the lead in front of his team-mate Mark Webber . Schumacher was again third. In the third free practice session on Saturday morning, Vettel kept the top position ahead of Webber. This time Hamilton was third. The training had to be interrupted for a short time after Kamui Kobayashi and Vitaly Petrow turned . Both drivers hit the wet curbs almost at the same time in the same corner and spun off the track. While Petrow's car was slightly damaged, Kobayashi was able to drive back onto the track at the end of practice.

Qualifying

In the first section of qualifying, Webber set the fastest lap. The HRT, Virgin and Lotus pilots as well as Rubens Barrichello were eliminated. Webber also retained the leadership position in the second section. The Force India and Toro Rosso pilots as well as Petrow, Hülkenberg and de la Rosa were eliminated. In the final section of qualifying, Webber was again the fastest, securing his second pole position of the season. Vettel and Hamilton started the race from second and third place.

run

Mark Webber won the start and then the race

Lotus driver Heikki Kovalainen did not compete in the Spanish Grand Prix due to a transmission problem. At the start there was no shift in position at the top and Webber maintained first position. Rosberg and Robert Kubica touched lightly and Rosberg fell back after being off the track. In the back of the field, Senna was eliminated after four corners in the gravel bed. Webber built a small lead over his team-mate in the front, but the two Red Bull-Renaults could not clearly break away from the rest of the field.

The first postponements occurred at the pit stops. Schumacher, who was sixth behind Button before his stop, was able to overtake Button, who was pulling out of the pit lane, with an earlier stop and an overtaking maneuver on the start-finish straight. While Button lost a position, it was the other way around for his teammate. Although Hamilton pitted after Vettel, the McLaren driver overtook Vettel at the pit exit. Webber, who did not have to give up the lead in the meantime because of a late stop, kept the top position.

While de la Rosa had to give up after 18 laps with a consequential damage after a tire damage on the first lap, Button tried again and again to pass Schumacher, but was unsuccessful. Furthermore, it was Sebastien Buemi punished with a drive-through penalty for dangerous driving out from the pit lane.

Michael Schumacher passed Jenson Button at the pit stops and was able to defend his position until the end of the race

When lapping, there were two incidents around Karun Chandhok in quick succession . First, Massa braked himself while lapping and damaged part of his front wing. The Ferrari driver continued the race without interference. Then Chandhok had a second contact when Jaime Alguersuari changed lanes early after lapping and Chandhok lost his front wing. The HRT driver then had to end the race. Alguersuari received a drive-through penalty for his maneuver.

Meanwhile, Webber continued to lead the race and steadily increased his lead over Hamilton. A little behind the McLaren-Mercedes driver, Vettel was in third place. Local hero Alonso, who drove an unspectacular race, followed the two at a distance. In about 20 seconds behind Alonso, Schumacher, Button and Massa followed.

After Buemi had given up with hydraulic problems, Vettel had to pit another tire change with twelve laps to go. He lost his third place to Alonso. But since he had enough lead over Schumacher, he only had to give up one place. Vettel also had braking problems, but stayed ahead of Schumacher until the end of the race because of the large lead.

Lewis Hamilton was in second place until the last lap

After Hamilton had set the fastest race lap on lap 59, he went into the final lap in second. Due to a defect in the left front wheel, he came off the track in the Renault curve and had to give up the race in the track barrier. Since he had completed enough laps, he was classified as 14th. Also Vitantonio Liuzzi did not finish the race because he also failed on the last lap.

Webber ended up winning his first race of the season ahead of Alonso and Vettel. It was a start-to-finish victory for the Australian. Schumacher defended his position throughout the race, finishing fourth ahead of Button and Massa. The remaining points went to Adrian Sutil , Kubica, Barrichello and Alguersuari.

In the world championship standings, Button and McLaren-Mercedes kept the top positions.

With Mark Webber, another driver won for the fifth time in a row.
