The 1996 Spanish Grand Prix took place on June 2 at the Circuit de Catalunya near Barcelona and was the seventh race of the 1996 Formula 1 World Championship . The race became known as Michael Schumacher's first win for Ferrari and is considered one of his most impressive rainy weather performances.

Reports

background

After the chaotic race in Monaco, in which none of the favorites crossed the finish line, little had changed in the lead in the drivers' standings. Hill continued to lead with 21 points ahead of Villeneuve, who in turn was six points ahead of Schumacher.

training

In the free practice on Friday, which was still driven on a dry track and in sunny weather, Eddie Irvine set the fastest lap ahead of Rubens Barrichello and Olivier Panis. Hill was fourth ahead of Schumacher and Villeneuve; Alesi only eight.

Qualifying

Qualifying also stayed dry. Damon Hill took his fourth pole position of the season, second and third place went to Villeneuve and Schumacher. The two Forti pilots did not succeed in qualifying due to the 107% rule.

run

Despite the heavy rain, the decision was made shortly before the start to start the race normally and not behind the safety car. Both Damon Hill and Michael Schumacher started badly and lost positions; Hill slipped back to third place, Schumacher even to seventh. Rubens Barrichello started very well and briefly fought for fourth place with Gerhard Berger .

Shortly after the start, Pedro Lamy , Ricardo Rosset , David Coulthard and Giancarlo Fisichella collided . While three were eliminated immediately, Fisichella was able to finish the lap and drive into the pit lane, where he had to end the race due to the damage. Also Olivier Panis had his car in the pits stop.

Both Eddie Irvine and Schumacher overtook Barrichello on the first lap before Irvine ended the race after a spin on the second lap. Johnny Herbert spun on lap four but got back on track, losing three places. Hill spun a short time later and came back onto the track behind Berger and Schumacher. Only one lap later, Schumacher had also overtaken Berger and on the next lap he caught up with the two leaders, who had initially pulled away slightly. On the eighth lap, Hill spun a second time, this time falling back to eighth place. A little later, Ukyo Katayama had to park his car due to an electronic fault. On the ninth lap, Schumacher managed to overtake Jean Alesi in the Seat corner. At the end of the eleventh lap, Hill spun on the start-finish straight and slid into the pit wall, which ended the race for him. Only a little later, Schumacher overtook Jacques Villeneuve in the same corner in which he had overtaken Alesi and now began to pull away at a rapid pace. By the end of the twelfth lap, he was two seconds ahead and he won four seconds per lap over runner-up Villeneuve while setting three fastest laps in a row.

In the 16th round the disqualification of Mika Salos was announced because he had switched to his replacement car without permission after the introductory round . Schumacher was the first in the lead in the 23rd lap, but since the gap was now 37 seconds, he didn't lose the lead.

On the 44th lap, a spin ended the race of fourth-placed Berger when he tried to lap Pedro Diniz . Just one lap later, a gearbox problem also ended Barrichello's race, which had slipped into fourth place after Bergers Aus. On lap 17, his team-mate Martin Brundle had to park his car with the same problem. Jos Verstappen , who was in fifth place, was the last to retire on lap 47 after spinning in a pile of tires.

Schumacher was the first to finish the race 45 seconds ahead of Alesi and Villeneuve. The fourth-placed Heinz-Harald Frentzen , who drove an unspectacular but safe race, was lapped by the front. Mika Häkkinen survived a spin towards the end of the race and finished fifth and Diniz, who drove a very cautious race, took one point in sixth place. Only six drivers - all from different teams - finished the race.
