Reports
background
After the Bahrain Grand Prix , Jenson Button led the drivers' standings with 12 points ahead of Rubens Barrichello and 13 points ahead of Sebastian Vettel . Brawn- Mercedes led the constructors' championship with 22.5 points ahead of Red Bull- Renault and with 23.5 points ahead of Toyota .
After Renault and BMW Sauber decided against using KERS , Ferrari and McLaren- Mercedes were the only teams to use the system. McLaren-Mercedes was the only team to use KERS in every race.
For the European kick-off, some teams traveled to the event with retreaded racing cars.
With Kimi Räikkönen (twice), Fernando Alonso and Felipe Massa (once each), three former winners competed in this Grand Prix.
training
In the first free practice, World Cup leader Button set the fastest time ahead of Jarno Trulli and Robert Kubica . In the second free practice session, Nico Rosberg secured the lead ahead of his Williams team- mate Kazuki Nakajima and Fernando Alonso . In the third free practice session, Felipe Massa and Kimi Räikkönen achieved a one- two lead for Ferrari, and Button was third.
Qualifying
As in the third free practice session, Massa achieved the fastest lap in the first segment of qualifying. His team-mate did not make the jump to the second section because he assumed that the time he had driven would be sufficient and was surprised in the pits when other pilots overtook him. In addition, Kovalainen , Bourdais and the Force India pilots were eliminated. Also in the second qualifying stage, a Brazilian, Barrichello, took the lead. Buemi , Hamilton , Heidfeld , Piquet and Nakajima. In the crucial third part of qualifying, Button secured pole position in front of Vettel and Barrichello.
run
After the start of the race there was a change of position at the front. Barrichello prevailed against the others and took the lead ahead of Button. Massa overtook Vettel and came third. In the first combination of corners he had a few collisions: Trulli came next to the track after a duel with Rosberg and came back spinning on the track. Sutil drove into Trulli's Toyota and the two Toro Rosso pilots Bourdais and Buemi collided. As a result of the accident, the safety car came onto the race track.
One lap after the race was reopened, Kovalainen retired with a gearbox failure. Barrichello led the race and was able to pull away from the rest of the field together with Button. Button even asked his teammate driving in front of him to drive even faster. In third place was Ferrari driver Massa, who drove ahead of Vettel. Although Vettel achieved sector best times, he could not overtake the Ferrari. After 17 laps, another pilot, Raikkonen, retired. The Finn's Ferrari had hydraulic damage.
Button completed his pit stop as the first in the leading group. One lap later, the lead pilot Barrichello pitted together with Mark Webber . Massa took the lead, but had to give it back to Barrichello one lap later after his pit stop. At the same time as Massa, Vettel pitted, but the German could not pass Massa. While Button had switched to a two-stop strategy when he stopped, Barrichello stayed on a three-stop strategy and thus had to develop a lead over Button. The Brit led the race after Barrichello's stop and pulled away from the rest of the field.
In the 43rd lap, Massa and Vettel came back to the pits at the same time and again Massa stayed ahead of Vettel. Button was able to stay on the track and extend his lead over Barrichello. Two laps after Button's last stop, Barrichello also made his last pit stop and came back on the track behind Button. Webber pits at the same time as Barrichello and was able to overtake Massa and Vettel with his subsequent stop.
A few laps before the end of the race, Massa had to save fuel and reduce his speed. After he was able to keep Vettel a few laps behind him, he finally had to let the German go. He was also overtaken by Alonso and made it to the finish line in sixth.
Button won the race and took his fourth win of the season. His team-mate Barrichello finished second ahead of Webber. The other points went to Vettel, Alonso, Massa, Heidfeld and Rosberg. With his victory, Button again extended the lead in the drivers' standings and Brawn GP was also able to extend its lead over the other teams with the double victory.
