Reports

background

After the Monaco Grand Prix , Jenson Button led the drivers' standings with 16 points ahead of Rubens Barrichello and 28 points ahead of Sebastian Vettel . Brawn- Mercedes led the drivers' standings with 43.5 points ahead of Red Bull- Renault and with 59.5 points ahead of Toyota .

Nick Heidfeld ( BMW Sauber ) did without KERS .

With Felipe Massa (three times) and Kimi Räikkönen (once), both former winners competed in this Grand Prix.

training

The best time in the first practice session was secured for the tenth time this season by Williams driver Nico Rosberg . World champions Lewis Hamilton and Jarno Trulli followed in second and third place . In the second free practice session, McLaren- Mercedes showed another good performance: After Hamilton's second place in the first practice session, Heikki Kovalainen set the fastest time. Fernando Alonso took second place ahead of Robert Kubica, six thousandths of a second behind . In the third free practice session, last year's winner Felipe Massa was the fastest pilot. The Ferrari driver relegated the two Toyota drivers Trulli and Timo Glock to second and third place.

Qualifying

Sebastian Vettel secured the pole position

In the first segment of qualifying for the Turkish Grand Prix, Vettel set the fastest time in front of the two Brawn drivers. Force India driver Adrian Sutil was faster than his friend Hamilton and thus ensured that qualifying for the Briton was over in the first part. Furthermore, Piquet , Buemi , Fisichella and Bourdais were eliminated. Vettel also set the fastest time in the second section of qualifying. Heidfeld, Nakajima , Glock, Kovalainen and Sutil were eliminated. In the third segment of qualifying there was a battle for pole position between Button and Vettel . After Button started from first place in the last two races, Vettel relegated him to second place in Istanbul. For Vettel it was the first pole position with dry track conditions. Third was the veteran Barrichello.

Jenson Button extended his lead in Turkey

Rosberg got off to a particularly good start, starting from ninth place up to fifth. Vettel, who started from first place, maintained his lead over Button at the start. However, the German did not stay at the head of the field for long: After making a driving mistake on the first lap, he was overtaken by Button, who quickly pulled away. The Briton had to do during the pit stop for a round of his leadership in the further course of the race Mark Webber give that needed for resting after the lead lap as well.

The Australian was like Button with a two-stop strategy, whereas Vettel had to stop three times. In retrospect, Vettel's strategy turned out to be unfortunate: While his teammate had free movement, Vettel was held up for a few laps by the leading button and could not go to the limit. In the end, Vettel took third place behind Webber. The race winner was Button, who achieved his sixth victory in the seventh Grand Prix. The other points went to Trulli, Rosberg, Massa, Kubica and Glock.

While the race went perfectly for Button, his team mate was followed by bad luck: After Barrichello did not get away well from third place at the start, he only finished twelfth after one lap. In front of him was Kovalainen, who, unlike Barrichello, had KERS and made it impossible for the faster Brazilian to overtake. On the seventh lap, the veteran turned after a daring maneuver against Kovalainen and fell back to seventeenth place. After passing Hamilton and Piquet relatively quickly, Barrichello ran into Sutil. The German did not give up 14th place without a fight and so there was finally a collision between the two pilots, in which Barrichello damaged his front wing. After a repair stop, Barrichello found himself in last place. With eleven laps to go, Barrichello had to end the race with gearbox problems in the pit lane.

Button's win was his last in the 2009 season.
