The 2009 Bahrain Grand Prix took place on April 26th at the Bahrain International Circuit in as-Sachir and was the fourth race of the 2009 Formula 1 World Championship .
Reports
background
After the Chinese Grand Prix , Jenson Button led the drivers' standings with 6 points ahead of Rubens Barrichello and 11 points ahead of Sebastian Vettel . Brawn- Mercedes led the constructors' championship with 16.5 points ahead of Red Bull- Renault and with 17.5 points ahead of Toyota .
Ferrari and Renault used KERS again and, for the first time, Robert Kubica ( BMW Sauber ).
With Fernando Alonso and Felipe Massa (twice each), two former winners competed in this Grand Prix.
After three races, Ferrari had not yet scored. This was the team's worst start to the season since 1981 .
training
Lewis Hamilton took the lead in the first free practice . BMW Sauber drivers Nick Heidfeld and Robert Kubica followed in second and third place . In the second Friday practice session, Nico Rosberg set the fastest lap ahead of Fernando Alonso and Jarno Trulli . In the third free practice Timo Glock set the fastest time ahead of Massa and Rosberg.
Qualifying
In the first section of qualifying, Vettel drove the fastest lap. For his team-mate Mark Webber , things didn't go so well as he was disabled and was eliminated in 19th place. In addition, the Force India and Toro Rosso pilots were eliminated. In the second section, Vettel again achieved the fastest lap. Piquet , Heidfeld, Kubica, Nakajima and Kovalainen did not make it into the third part of the qualification. In the final section, Trulli secured pole position in front of his team-mate Glock and thus for the first time two Toyota cars were on the front row. Third was Vettel. For Trulli it was the first pole position since the US Grand Prix in 2005 .
run
The race started on the Bahrain International Circuit in front of around 30,000 spectators. There were a few shifts at the top: Glock prevailed against Trulli at the start and took the lead. Hamilton pulled past Button and Vettel and took third place. Vettel got off to a bad start and dropped to fifth place. Massa could not hold his position either and had to have his front wing changed after a collision with his team-mate Kimi Raikkonen . After Button overtook Hamilton back, the Toyota drivers were able to break away from the rest of the field. However, the Toyota had to pit early to refuel and so Button took over the lead of the race. Trulli was able to overtake Glock due to a later stop and was overtaken by his former team mate Alonso a little later.
After Button and Hamilton were also in the pits, Vettel and Raikkonen took over the lead of the race for a short time. After the two of them stopped, Button led the race ahead of Trulli. Vettel took third place behind the two and didn't make it past Trulli. However, the Red Bull driver had more fuel on board and was able to drive longer than Trulli, who made his second stop at the same time as Button. This gave him a head start and finally overtook Trulli after his pit stop.
With eight laps to go, Nakajima, the only driver to retire in this race, in which he gave up when the oil pressure in the pits dropped. There were no further changes at the top and so Button won his third race of the season ahead of Vettel and Trulli. The other points went to Hamilton, Barrichello, Raikkonen, who scored the first points for Ferrari, Glock and Alonso.
For BMW Sauber, the race went worse than expected. After being in the top group in the first free practice session, Heidfeld and Kubica followed the field in the race and were mostly the last two drivers.
Button and Brawn GP were able to further extend their lead in the world championship. Barrichello kept second place in front of Vettel.
