After the Chinese Grand Prix , Lewis Hamilton and Sebastian Vettel led the drivers' standings, tied with 18 points, ahead of Max Verstappen . In the constructors' championship, Mercedes was one point ahead of Ferrari and 29 points ahead of Red Bull Racing .

At the Bahrain Grand Prix, Pirelli provided the drivers with the tire compounds P Zero Medium (white), P Zero Soft (yellow), P Zero Supersoft (red), as well as Cinturato Intermediates (green) and Cinturato Full Wets (blue) for wet conditions . Since the order for the tires of each compound available to each driver had to be placed before the test drives before the season, the FIA determined in advance that each driver would receive seven sets of super soft , four sets of soft and two sets of medium .

The DRS zones remained unchanged compared to the previous year, the measuring point for the first zone was ten meters before curve nine , the zone itself began at the beginning of the back straight, exactly 50 meters after curve ten . The measuring point for the second DRS zone was 108 meters before turn 14 , the DRS could then be activated on the start-finish straight , 270 meters after turn 15 . There were also no structural changes to the route.

After Pascal Wehrlein had to skip the races in Australia and China, he made his debut at Sauber at the Bahrain Grand Prix .

The following drivers started the race weekend with penalty points: Daniil Kwjat (eight), Jolyon Palmer (seven), Nico Hülkenberg , Vettel (six each), Carlos Sainz jr. (five), Kevin Magnussen , Esteban Ocon , Pascal Wehrlein (four each), Romain Grosjean , Sergio Pérez (three each), Valtteri Bottas , Marcus Ericsson , Felipe Massa , Kimi Räikkönen (two each) and Verstappen (one).

With Massa, Vettel and Hamilton (twice each) and Fernando Alonso (once), four former winners competed for this Grand Prix.

Race stewards were Mazen Al Hilli (BRN), Gerd Ennser (DEU), Radovan Novak (CZE) and Danny Sullivan (USA).

free training

In the first free practice session, Vettel set the fastest time with a lap time of 1: 32.697 minutes ahead of Daniel Ricciardo and Verstappen.

In the second free practice session, Vettel also set the fastest lap time in 1: 31.310 minutes ahead of Bottas and Ricciardo.

In the third free practice session, Verstappen was fastest in 1: 32.194 minutes ahead of Hamilton and Vettel. The training was interrupted by Grosjean after an accident.

Qualifying

The qualifying consisted of three parts with a net running time of 45 minutes. In the first qualifying segment (Q1), the drivers had 18 minutes to qualify for the race. All drivers who achieved a time in the first section that was a maximum of 107 percent of the fastest lap time qualified for the Grand Prix. The best 15 drivers reached the next part. Hamilton was fastest. The Mercedes drivers and Vettel achieved their time on soft tires, everyone else drove supersoft . Magnussen, Ericsson, Pérez, Stoffel Vandoorne and Sainz, who set an absolute best time on his last timed lap in the first section, but then parked his Toro Rosso with a technical defect, were eliminated.

The second section (Q2) lasted 15 minutes. The ten fastest drivers qualified for the third part of the qualifying. Hamilton was again fastest. Alonso, who did not set time due to a defect in this section, as well as Ocon, Wehrlein, Lance Stroll and Kwjat were eliminated.

The last section (Q3) lasted twelve minutes, in which the first ten starting positions were assigned. Bottas set the fastest time with a lap time of 1: 28.769 minutes ahead of Hamilton and Vettel. It was the first pole position for Bottas in the Formula 1 World Championship.

run

Vandoorne did not start the race due to lack of water pressure. His starting position on the starting grid remained empty. At Bottas there was a defect in the generator to reduce the tire pressure, so Bottas had to start with increased tire pressure.

Bottas stayed in the lead at the start, behind Vettel passed Hamilton. Verstappen started very well and initially passed Raikkonen and then Ricciardo when braking into the first corner. Raikkonen also had to let Massa pass during the first lap.

Bottas was unable to break away from the rest of the field because of the increased tire pressure. He stopped Vettel, Hamilton, Verstappen and Ricciardo, all of whom were within three seconds. Massa was another three seconds behind and had to defend against Raikkonen. On the seventh lap, Raikkonen managed to overtake Massa on the start-finish straight. Magnussen parked his Haas-Ferrari on the ninth lap with an electrical fault on the edge of the track.

At the end of lap nine, Vettel was the first driver from the leading group to pit and switched to Supersoft . He fell back to twelfth place. A lap later, Verstappen came to the pit stop, he fell behind Vettel. Shortly after his pit stop, Verstappen had a brake defect, which slipped through the run- off zone , then hit the track barrier and was eliminated. Raikkonen drove to the pits and switched again to Supersoft .

On lap 13, Sainz, who was coming out of the pit lane, collided with Stroll in the first corner, both vehicles were so badly damaged that they were eliminated. The race management sent the safety car out onto the track to rescue the vehicles and remove the debris . With the exception of Ericsson, all drivers who have not yet changed tires use this for pit stops. Hamilton, who drove directly behind Bottas, reduced the speed to 57 km / h when both drove to the pit stop one after the other so as not to have to wait in the pits for Bottas to be processed. He stopped Ricciardo in the process, but fell behind him after his pit stop, as there was a problem with an impact wrench when Bottas changed tires. The race stewards pronounced a 5-second time penalty on Hamilton, and he also received two penalty points. As the cause of the collision with Stroll, Sainz received a relocation of three starting places for the Russian Grand Prix and also two penalty points.

Bottas and Raikkonen also switched to Supersoft , Hamilton, Ricciardo and Massa to Soft . Raikkonen also had difficulties installing the right front wheel, so that he lost a few seconds. After these pit stops, Vettel led in front of Bottas, Ricciardo, Hamilton, Massa, Räikkönen, Hülkenberg, Ericsson, Pérez and Grosjean.

The race was reopened on lap 16. Hamilton, Massa and Raikkonen overtook Ricciardo, who found it difficult to bring his soft tires to the required temperature. Ericsson, who was still riding on the tires fitted at the start, lost several positions, and Pérez overtook Hülkenberg. Grosjean reported a loss of power over the radio, and the team diagnosed a problem with the MGU-K . Grosjean drove on anyway.

Raikkonen overtook Massa on lap 24 and was now in fourth place. Shortly thereafter, Bottas, whose Supersoft tires were noticeably weakening and who was already more than six seconds behind Vettel, let Hamilton pass. In midfield, Alonso, Kwjat and Palmer fought in a group. Kwjat passed Palmer on lap 27. The vehicles came into contact; Palmer lost part of his front wing. Ricciardo caught up with Massa and overtook him on lap 29.

Bottas drove to the second tire change on lap 30 and switched to soft , he fell back to seventh place. One lap later, Grosjean switched to Soft , while Bottas overtook Pérez and drove the fastest lap to date. Vettel switched to soft on lap 33 and was now in third place behind Hamilton and Raikkonen. Shortly afterwards Bottas overtook Massa.

Vettel drove the fastest lap of the race and caught up with Raikkonen, who let him pass on lap 36. Meanwhile, Pérez switched to Soft , Hulkenberg and Alonso to Supersoft . One lap later, Raikkonen, Massa and Ocon came to the second pit stop, all switched to soft . On lap 39 Ricciardo switched to Supersoft , Hülkenberg and Ocon passed Wehrlein.

Hamilton was the last driver to make the final pit stop on lap 41. He served his 5-second time penalty and had a new set of soft tires fitted. He fell back to third place. Vettel was leading by around ten seconds, Hamilton was another nine seconds behind. Behind were Raikkonen, Ricciardo, Massa, Pérez, Grosjean, Hülkenberg and Ocon.

Hamilton drove the fastest lap several times and caught up to two seconds per lap on Vettel and Bottas, who let him pass on lap 47. Ericsson rolled out on lap 52 with a gearbox defect. Hamilton reduced the gap to Vettel to around six seconds, but was no longer within striking distance. On lap 56, Alonso reported an engine fault on the pit radio and gave up the race in the pits.

Vettel won the race ahead of Hamilton and Bottas. It was Vettel's 44th victory in the Formula 1 World Championship. Hamilton achieved the third, Bottas the second podium finish of the season. The remaining points were taken by Raikkonen, Ricciardo, Massa, Pérez, Grosjean, Hülkenberg and Ocon. It was Hulkenberg's first point for Renault.

In the overall standings, Vettel was now ahead of Hamilton and Bottas. In the constructors' championship, Ferrari took the lead from Mercedes and Red Bull.
