backgrounds

After the Bahrain Grand Prix , Sebastian Vettel led the drivers' standings with seven points ahead of Lewis Hamilton and 30 points ahead of Valtteri Bottas . In the constructors' championship, Ferrari was three points ahead of Mercedes and 55 points ahead of Red Bull .

At the Russian Grand Prix, Pirelli provided the drivers with the tire compounds P Zero Soft (yellow), P Zero Supersoft (red), P Zero Ultrasoft (purple), as well as Cinturato Intermediates (green) and Cinturato Full Wets (blue) for wet conditions . Since the order for the tires of each compound available to each driver had to be placed before the test drives before the season, the FIA determined in advance that each driver would be given seven sets of Ultrasoft , four sets of Supersoft and two sets of Soft .

At the exit of turn two , so-called speed bumps were installed on both sides three meters from the edge of the track . These are 50 mm high, additional curb stones that are intended to prevent drivers from leaving the route. In addition, the TecPro barriers were reinforced in turn two , turn four and turn 13 .

The route had two DRS zones, which remained unchanged compared to the previous year. The first zone started at the apex of turn one , the measuring point was 138 meters before the turn. The second measuring point was 72 meters before turn ten , immediately afterwards on the back straight, 230 meters behind the curve the second DRS zone began.

After McLaren-Honda had problems with the drive unit in the first three races and finished last in the constructors' championship with just one finish, the team used a heavily revised MGU-H for the first time at this Grand Prix , which was used in the test drives the Bahrain International Circuit did not show any reliability problems.

Daniil Kwjat (eight), Jolyon Palmer , Carlos Sainz jr. (seven each), Vettel (six), Nico Hülkenberg , Kevin Magnussen , Esteban Ocon , Pascal Wehrlein (four each), Romain Grosjean , Sergio Pérez (three each), Bottas, Marcus Ericsson , Hamilton, Felipe Massa , Kimi Räikkönen (each two) and Max Verstappen (one) went into the race weekend with penalty points.

With Hamilton (twice) a former winner competed at this Grand Prix.

Race stewards were Silvia Bellot (ESP), Paul Gutjahr (CHE), Mika Salo (FIN) and Wassili Skryl (RUS).

free training

In the first free practice, Raikkonen set the fastest lap in 1: 36.074 minutes ahead of Bottas and Hamilton. Training had to be interrupted after Ocon lost the engine cover on his vehicle on the track. At Stoffel Vandoorne , the drive unit had to be changed after the training. Since he had already used the fourth turbocharger and the fourth MGU-H this season, this means a move back from 15 places on the starting line-up.

In the second free practice session, Vettel was fastest with a lap time of 1: 34.120 minutes ahead of Raikkonen and Bottas.

In the third free practice session, too, Vettel was fastest with a lap time of 1: 34.001 minutes, ahead of Raikkonen and Bottas.

Qualifying

The qualifying consisted of three parts with a net running time of 45 minutes. In the first qualifying segment (Q1), the drivers had 18 minutes to qualify for the race. All drivers who achieved a time in the first section that was a maximum of 107 percent of the fastest lap time qualified for the Grand Prix. The best 15 drivers reached the next part. The Ferrari drivers were the only drivers to use Supersoft , all other drivers were using Ultrasoft . Bottas was the fastest. Palmer hit the bar just before the end of the segment, because of the yellow flags no improvement was possible for the other drivers. Grosjean, the Sauber pilots, Stoffel Vandoorne and Palmer were eliminated.

The second section (Q2) lasted 15 minutes. The ten fastest pilots qualified for the third part of qualifying. Bottas was again fastest. Alonso, Magnussen, the Toro Rosso drivers and Lance Stroll were eliminated.

The final section (Q3) lasted twelve minutes, during which the first ten starting positions were awarded. With a lap time of 1: 33.194 minutes, Vettel set the best time ahead of Raikkonen and Bottas. It was the 47th pole position for Vettel in the Formula 1 World Championship and the first since the 2015 Singapore Grand Prix . It was also the first time since the 2008 French Grand Prix that the drivers of the Ferrari team finished first and second in qualifying.

Sainz was relegated by three for causing a collision at the Bahrain Grand Prix, Vandoorne for using the fifth turbocharger and fifth MGU-H this season by fifteen places.

Bottas won the race ahead of Vettel and Raikkonen. It was Bottas' first victory in the Formula 1 World Championship and the fourth victory of a Mercedes driver in the fourth race at the Sochi Autodrom. Vettel achieved the fourth podium finish in the fourth race of the season, Raikkonen his first since the 2016 Austrian Grand Prix . The remaining points were placed by Hamilton, Verstappen, Pérez, Ocon, Hülkenberg, Massa and Sainz. Hamilton last crossed the finish line outside of the podium at the European Grand Prix in 2016 , while Ocon achieved his best result in the Formula 1 World Championship.

In the drivers' championship, Vettel extended the lead over Hamilton, Bottas caught up a few points on both of them. In the constructors' championship, Mercedes was now ahead of Ferrari, Red Bull remained third.
