backgrounds

After the European Grand Prix , Nico Rosberg led the drivers' standings with 24 points ahead of Lewis Hamilton and 45 points ahead of Sebastian Vettel . In the constructors' championship, Mercedes was 81 points ahead of Ferrari and 118 points ahead of Red Bull .

At the Austrian Grand Prix, Pirelli provided the drivers with the tire compounds P Zero Soft (yellow), P Zero Supersoft (red) and P Zero Ultrasoft (purple) as well as Cinturato Intermediates (green) and Cinturato Full Wets (blue) for wet conditions .

In the run-up to the race, the entire route was re-paved. The curbs were renewed around the track, and new 100 mm high curbs were installed in the Castrol Edge , Remus and Rindt to prevent drivers from leaving the track at this point.

There were two DRS zones that remained unchanged compared to the previous year. The first zone began exactly 85 meters after the Remus , the measuring point was 360 meters before this curve. The second zone was on the start-finish straight and began 110 meters after the Red Bull Mobile , the distance between the vehicles was measured ten meters after the Rindt .

Daniil Kwjat (seven), Max Verstappen (six), Kimi Räikkönen (five), Valtteri Bottas , Marcus Ericsson , Nico Hülkenberg , Pascal Wehrlein (four each), Fernando Alonso , Esteban Gutiérrez , Romain Grosjean , Hamilton, Rio Haryanto and Felipe Nasr (two each) went into the race weekend with penalty points.

With Rosberg (twice) a former winner took part in this Grand Prix.

Race stewards were Garry Connelly (AUS), Martin Donnelly (GBR), Radovan Novak (CZE) and Wilhelm Singer (AUT).

training

In the first free practice, Rosberg set the fastest time ahead of Hamilton and Vettel with a lap time of 1: 07.373 minutes. Also in the second free practice session, Rosberg was fastest in 1: 07.967 minutes ahead of Hamilton, with Hülkenberg third.

In the third free practice session, Vettel was the fastest time ahead of Raikkonen and Hamilton with a lap time of 1: 07.098 minutes. The training was interrupted after an accident by Rosberg due to a broken suspension.

Qualifying

The qualifying consisted of three parts with a net running time of 45 minutes. In the first qualifying segment (Q1), the drivers had 18 minutes to qualify for the race. All drivers who achieved a time in the first section that was a maximum of 107 percent of the fastest lap time qualified for the Grand Prix. The best 16 drivers reached the next part. Rosberg was the fastest. Pérez suffered a broken suspension but was able to return to the pits at a slow pace. The training was interrupted about two minutes before the end after an accident by Kvjat due to a broken suspension. When the drivers wanted to start one last fast lap after the interruption, Carlos Sainz jr. yellow flags waved, an improvement of the times was therefore no longer possible. The Sauber drivers, Kwjat, Haryanto and both Renault drivers were eliminated.

The second section (Q2) lasted 15 minutes. The ten fastest pilots qualified for the third part of qualifying. It started raining four minutes before the end of the segment. Hamilton was fastest. Both Ferrari drivers and Verstappen achieved their time on the Supersoft compound, all other drivers on Ultrasoft . Pérez and Sainz didn't set any time, and Alonso, the Haas pilots and Wehrlein were eliminated.

The final section (Q3) lasted twelve minutes, during which the first ten starting positions were awarded. This segment started in wet track conditions, but the track dried out over the course of the segment, so all pilots switched from intermediates to dry tires. Hamilton set the fastest time with a lap time of 1: 07.922 minutes ahead of Rosberg and Hülkenberg. It was Hamilton's 54th pole position, the fifth of which in the season.

Vettel was moved back five starting positions because the gearbox of his car was changed prematurely. Rosberg also received the same penalty, as his gearbox had to be changed after the accident in the third free practice session. There were also investigations against several other drivers who had not slowed sufficiently at the end of Q1 when yellow flags were waved at Sainz because of the engine failure. Haryanto, Nasr and Jolyon Palmer were relocated by three starting places and each received two penalty points, Hülkenberg and Magnussen were acquitted after analyzing the telemetry data.

Kwjat had to start from the pit lane because the monocoque had to be replaced after his accident in qualifying. Even Felipe Massa started had to because of a defect on the front wing, which are changed from the pit lane. However, his starting position remained free at the start, the drivers behind were not allowed to move up.

run

Hamilton stayed in front at the start, followed by Jenson Button , Räikkönen, Ricciardo, Hülkenberg and Rosberg. Hülkenberg and Rosberg passed Ricciardo on the first lap. On the third lap, Kvjat parked his vehicle on the edge of the track with a technical defect.

Hamilton managed to break away at the top. Rosberg passed Hülkenberg, who then had to let the two Red Bull drivers and Vettel pass. Vettel overtook Ricciardo and Verstappen in quick succession and was now fifth. Raikkonen put Button under pressure and passed, shortly afterwards Rosberg did the same.

Hülkenberg was the first driver of the leading group to go to the pits to change tires on lap eight, and, just like Alonso, switched to Supersoft on lap eight . At the same time, Verstappen also overtook Button, who drove to change tires together with Bottas on the following lap, both drivers switched to soft . Rosberg did the same on lap 10 and Ricciardo on lap 14, who came back onto the track behind Rosberg. One lap later, Verstappen, who came back onto the track immediately behind Rosberg and in front of Ricciardo, stopped. All three pilots ran into Grosjean, which they overtook one after the other on the following two laps.

Hamilton switched to soft on lap 21 and dropped immediately behind Rosberg. Kevin Magnussen changed lines several times when Wehrlein attacked, for which he was given a five-second time penalty. Raikkonen also switched to Soft on lap 22 , falling behind Ricciardo. In the 24th lap, Hülkenberg pitted for the second tire change, this time also switching to soft .

On the 27th lap, the leading Vettel, who had not yet been to the pits, suffered a tire damage on the start-finish straight, turned and hit the guardrail. The race management sent the safety car out onto the track in order to recover Vettel's vehicle and remove the debris from the track. The safety car led the field one lap through the pit lane so that the marshals could clear the start-finish straight. Button and Grosjean used this to change tires. Grosjean and Hulkenberg drove too fast in the pit lane and both received a five-second time penalty.

Rosberg, meanwhile, was leading ahead of Hamilton, Verstappen, Ricciardo, Raikkonen, Bottas, Nasr, Button, Grosjean and Massa. The race was reopened on lap 31.

On lap 39, Button first passed Nasr, then Grosjean, Massa and Pérez. Nasr switched to soft on lap 43 and fell back to 20th place.

Hülkenberg pitted on lap 50 and let Ultrasoft wind up, one lap later Bottas switched to Supersoft . Both fell out of the points. Hamilton switched to soft on lap 54 , Rosberg one lap later to supersoft . Both were now in second and third place behind Verstappen, who finished the race without another pit stop.

Rosberg and Hamilton shortened the gap to Verstappen and passed on laps 61 and 63 respectively. Ricciardo switched to Ultrasoft on lap 63 , with which he quickly caught up with Grosjean and Button and overtook both. Massa was eliminated on lap 64, shortly afterwards also Alonso and Hülkenberg.

At the front, Hamilton drove significantly faster than Rosberg and was within striking distance three laps before the end of the race. In the last lap, Hamilton attacked Rosberg, who defended himself. Rosberg braked himself and a collision occurred in which Rosberg damaged his front wing. Both drivers were able to continue, but Rosberg fell back to fourth place by the finish line. Pérez retired due to a brake defect and hit the track on the last lap.

Hamilton won the race ahead of Verstappen and Raikkonen. It was the 46th victory for Hamilton in the Formula 1 World Championship. Verstappen achieved the second podium of his career, Raikkonen the fourth of the season. The remaining points were placed by Rosberg, Ricciardo, Button, Grosjean, Sainz, Bottas and Wehrlein. It was the first World Cup point for Wehrlein and the first point for Manor of the season.

In the overall standings, Hamilton shortened the gap to Rosberg to eleven points, Vettel remained third, now level on points with Raikkonen. The first three positions in the constructors' championship remained unchanged.
