Reports

background

On the occasion of his home Grand Prix, Gerhard Berger completed his first Formula 1 race behind the wheel of a second ATS . Stefan Bellof returned to the field and took his regular seat at Tyrrell instead of Mike Thackwell , who had represented him at the German Grand Prix two weeks earlier .

training

Nelson Piquet qualified for pole position ahead of Alain Prost , Elio de Angelis and Niki Lauda . The two Renault drivers Patrick Tambay and Derek Warwick formed the third row on the grid, ahead of Teo Fabi and Nigel Mansell .

As his car turned out to be underweight after training, Stefan Bellof was disqualified. Like his team-mate Stefan Johansson , however, he would not have been qualified for one of the 26 starting positions anyway due to poor lap times.

run

The first attempt to start was canceled because Elio de Angelis stalled his engine.

The second attempt was successful and Piquet defended his top position against Prost. De Angelis, like Lauda, was overtaken by the two Renault drivers Tambay and Warwick. It then took the two overtaken drivers up to the tenth lap to counter successfully, with Lauda now in third place ahead of de Angelis.

A change in the first three positions did not occur again until lap 29, when Prost turned off after driving over an oil spill. This put Lauda in second place ahead of Ayrton Senna , who had meanwhile fought his way up from tenth on the grid. This was favored, among other things, by the technical failure of de Angelis in the previous round. Only three laps later, Senna was overtaken by Tambay. On lap 35 he had to give up due to an engine failure.

By the 40th lap, Lauda managed to catch up with the leader Piquet. In the course of a lapping maneuver there was an opportunity to overtake, which Lauda successfully used.

As Tambay retired on lap 43 due to an engine failure, Michele Alboreto was third in the end ahead of Teo Fabi and the two Arrows drivers Thierry Boutsen and Marc Surer .
