The 1984 USA Grand Prix took place on July 8th in Dallas and was the ninth race of the 1984 Formula 1 World Championship .
Reports
background
For the US Grand Prix, which was held two weeks after the US East Grand Prix in Detroit for the first time at the Fair Park Grand Prix Circuit in Dallas, Arrows brought a second A7 to the start. As a sufficient number of BMW turbo engines were now available, both factory drivers could be equipped with them.
Instead of Teo Fabi , his brother Corrado took over the second Brabham BT53 in Bernie Ecclestone's team .
During the midsummer weekend, track temperatures of up to 66 ° C were measured at times. The already poor quality asphalt formed bubbles and broke open in several places.
training
The two Lotus drivers Nigel Mansell and Elio de Angelis completed the fastest lap times of the first qualifying session. Although neither driver took part in the second round, their best times remained and were not beaten, so that Mansell achieved the first pole position of his Formula 1 career. This was the first double pole for Lotus since the 1978 Dutch Grand Prix .
Derek Warwick and René Arnoux formed the second row in front of Niki Lauda , Ayrton Senna , Alain Prost and Keke Rosberg .
With the high air temperature of up to 38 ° C prevailing during training, the BMW turbo engines proved to be less than competitive. The Brabham pilots only qualified for positions 11 and 12.
Martin Brundle injured both feet in an accident.
run
Since the day of the race was also very hot, Rosberg decided to try out a new type of cooling system in his helmet. Arnoux had to start the race from last place because his Ferrari 126C4 did not start for the pre-start, which was signaled by actor Larry Hagman with the green flag.
Mansell took the lead ahead of de Angelis, Warwick and Senna. On the second lap, Senna hit a wall that bordered the track, damaged a tire and had to head for the pits. On lap four, Warwick took second place from de Angelis. In the tenth lap, however, he was eliminated by an accident, so that the Lotus one-two was restored. It lasted until lap 19, when Rosberg took second place.
From about the second third of the race, the number of driving errors increased noticeably, which was mainly due to fatigue due to the heat. For example, Patrick Tambay retired on the 25th lap due to a self-inflicted accident. Meanwhile, Alain Prost fought his way up to second place up to the 33rd lap, but also fell back behind Rosberg shortly afterwards due to a driving error. On lap 36, the latter took the lead from Mansell, who then fell back and headed for the pit to have his tires changed.
On the 49th lap, Prost took the lead past Rosberg. In the meantime, Arnoux had finished fourth behind Lauda after a considerable race to catch up from the back of the field. He overtook this shortly afterwards. When Prost hit the wall on lap 57, Rosberg was in the lead ahead of Arnoux, Lauda and de Angelis. Since Lauda also retired shortly before the race was stopped prematurely due to reaching the two-hour limit, de Angelis reached the podium in third place, which for the only time in the 1984 season consisted exclusively of drivers who were fitted with Goodyear tires were. Laffite, who has already been lapped twice, finished fourth ahead of Piercarlo Ghinzani , who secured the first points of the season for Osella (as well as the first and only points of his career).
Nigel Mansell's car broke down on the last lap due to a gearbox failure. While trying to push the vehicle to the finish, Mansell collapsed from exhaustion a few meters from the finish line. Due to the distance he had covered, he was classified as sixth and thus received a World Championship point.
Besides the Belgian Grand Prix , this was the only race of the 1984 season in which neither of the two McLaren drivers achieved the points. Honda , on the other hand, was able to record its first Grand Prix victory since the Italian Grand Prix in 1967 , where it was represented as a works team and not exclusively as an engine supplier.
