background
The Dutch Grand Prix took place a week after the race in Austria . In contrast to this, ATS decided not to use a second car this time.
training
Alain Prost , who had lost his lead in the championship standings to his McLaren team- mate Niki Lauda the previous weekend , secured pole position in front of the reigning world champion Nelson Piquet on Brabham . Behind it followed Lotus -Pilot Elio de Angelis ahead of the two Renault of Derek Warwick and Patrick Tambay and Lauda qualified sixth. The two Williams team- mates Keke Rosberg and Jacques Laffite formed the fourth row on the grid.
Since, as an exception, 27 participants were admitted instead of the usual 26 participants, all pilots who completed the training were able to qualify for the race.
run
Piquet managed to overtake Prost shortly after the start and thus take the lead in front of him and Tambay, de Angelis and Rosberg. By the fifth lap, Rosberg fought his way up to third place. Lauda, who initially dropped to ninth place due to a poor start, also quickly made up positions and took fourth place in lap nine.
When the leader Piquet retired on the eleventh lap due to an engine failure, Lauda was briefly in third place behind Prost and Rosberg, who were now in the lead. Just one lap later, however, he overtook Rosberg and thus established a McLaren one-two lead that lasted to the finish.
During laps 52 and 53, Nigel Mansell managed to overtake his team-mate Elio de Angelis and Keke Rosberg and take third place. As Rosberg ran out of fuel with three laps to go, de Angelis finished fourth ahead of Teo Fabi and Patrick Tambay.
Although there were still three world championship races to complete, McLaren was the winner of the constructors' world championship title due to the renewed double victory. It was the second world title in team history after the first success in 1974 .
