Due to safety concerns on the part of the Grand Prix Drivers' Association opposite the circuit in Spa-Francorchamps , the Belgian Grand Prix , which was actually planned for the 1969 season, had been canceled. As a result, there was a five-week break between the Monaco GP and the following World Championship round.

Some designers used this time to develop new variants of aerodynamic aids after the high rear wing was banned. Some vehicles competed with wings that were mounted directly on the body. This was in line with the new rules and from then on became the common design for front and rear wings. In addition, the Matra and Lotus teams experimented with all-wheel drive vehicles. Jackie Stewart tested the Matra MS84 and Graham Hill the Lotus 63 during practice. However, both qualified for the race with their conventional rear-wheel drive cars.

Also BRM brought to the P139 , a new development with Zandvoort made by John Surtees was driven in practice and found to be not yet mature.

The private team Antique Automobiles used a more modern McLaren M7A instead of the Cooper T86 . The Cooper had proven to be no longer competitive and only came close to the points in Monaco because of the high failure rate of the competition.

On everyone's lips this weekend was the news that Ferrari had initiated a collaboration with Fiat SpA . It was therefore predicted that the racing team, which had been rather unspectacular up until now this season , should become more competitive again due to the improved financial situation.

training

Lotus regular driver Jochen Rindt , who had recovered from his injury at the Spanish GP , drove the fastest training time and was the only driver to stay under 1:21 minutes. Besides him, Jackie Stewart and Graham Hill qualified for the front row . Chris Amon and Jacky Ickx shared row two.

run

Hill initially took over the top position, which Rindt expanded into a double Lotus lead in second place. Stewart and Amon followed in front of the very good start Denis Hulme . On the third lap, Rindt overtook his team-mate Hill. A little later, Stewart also succeeded. He came into the top position on lap 17 without a fight, as Rindt retired due to a mechanical defect. Jo Siffert , who in the meantime had fought his way up to third, got to second due to Rindt's failure.

Because Hill suddenly headed for the pits due to handling problems, there was an exciting competition for third place in the final laps between Hulme, Amon, Ickx and Jack Brabham . This drew the attention of the audience, so that the safe victory of Jackie Stewart was registered almost only marginally.
