The Tiruchirapalli Airport , also Tirichy airport or Tirichi Airport (Tamil: தி 5 ச்சிராப்பள்ளி வானூர்தி நிலையம் ; English: Tiruchirapalli Airport ) is a commercial airport near the city of Tiruchirapalli in India. It is operated by the state Airports Authority of India .
history
The airport was opened as an air base for the Royal Air Force during the Second World War and opened for civilian use after the war. Air Ceylon was the first company to fly to the airport regularly as a stopover on its route from Colombo to Madras from 1947 .
In February 2009, a new terminal with associated facilities was inaugurated at the airport. It has two with passenger boarding bridges as well as further parking positions for commercial aircraft near the building. There are 300 parking spaces in front of the terminal. The building is very transparent and spacious and has numerous facilities such as VIP lounges and restaurants.
The airport is used nationally and internationally. There are international routes to Colombo, Kuala Lumpur, Doha or Singapore, for example. Only a few destinations are served in Germany. SriLankan, Mihin Lanka, Air India, Qatar Airways and other companies are active. The cargo area at the airport is also important.
