Reports
background
The Fittipaldi team returned to the field and from then on competed with Pirelli tires. Bruno Giacomelli had to resort to the Alfa Romeo 179C , as only one of the current 179D was available. Otherwise there were no changes compared to the Austrian Grand Prix two weeks earlier.
training
For the fourth year in a row, the front row was composed of the two Renault together, this time Alain Prost towards René Arnoux was just the beginning. It was followed by Nelson Piquet , who shared the second row with reigning world champion Alan Jones . Carlos Reutemann , who was leading in the World Championship at the time, qualified for fifth place on the grid alongside Jacques Laffite .
Andrea de Cesaris , who qualified 13th, was withdrawn from the start by his team. This was seen by many as a punishment for causing significant damage from numerous accidents in previous races.
run
While the two Renault drivers were able to defend their top positions at the start, Gilles Villeneuve , who started from 16th place, tried to make up a few positions in the first few meters to put his mediocre qualifying result into perspective. He tried to stab between Riccardo Patrese and Bruno Giacomelli, collided with the Alfa Romeo and was eliminated. In the next corner, Mario Andretti collided with Carlos Reutemann and his front wing was damaged. A third collision occurred during the first lap, between Didier Pironi and Patrick Tambay .
Arnoux, who had initially defended second place behind Prost, fell behind Jones, Piquet, Laffite and Reutemann from the third lap on. On the 13th lap, John Watson finally overtook the Frenchman on the outside of the Tarzanbocht and finished sixth.
While Jones caught up on Prost, Reutemann and Laffite dueled for fourth place. The duel ended on lap 18 with a collision that led to the failure of both opponents. On lap 23, Jones managed to briefly take the lead. However, it fell behind Prost again in the following round. In the final phase, due to deteriorating tires, he finally had to give Piquet second place, which meant that he was level with the previous leader Reutemann in the World Cup table.
In the end, Héctor Rebaque finished fourth ahead of Elio de Angelis and Eliseo Salazar , who scored the first championship point for a Chilean driver.
