The 1981 Las Vegas Grand Prix took place on October 17th as the 15th and final race of the 1981 Formula 1 World Championship in Las Vegas .
Reports
background
After the US West Grand Prix had taken place in Long Beach at the beginning of the season, a US East Grand Prix in Watkins Glen was planned for the season finale, as in previous years . However, since this route no longer met the current safety requirements at the time, an alternative was sought. This was found in the form of a street circuit in the parking lot of Caesars Palace in Las Vegas. Since the city was not in the east of the United States, but rather to the west like Long Beach, a new name had to be chosen. The decision was made for Caesars Palace Grand Prix or the name of the city in which the race took place. This had only happened once before, at the 1957 Pescara Grand Prix .
The rumors that Niki Lauda would return to Formula 1 after a two-year hiatus in 1982 had meanwhile become a certainty.
There were no changes in the field of drivers compared to the Canadian Grand Prix three weeks earlier. Before the race, Carlos Reutemann led the drivers' standings with 49 points. Of the pursuers, Nelson Piquet (48 points) and Jacques Laffite (43 points) had chances for the title. In the constructors' championship, however, Williams had an unassailable lead with 86 points over Brabham , whose drivers Piquet and Hector Rebaque had only collected 59 points.
training
Carlos Reutemann, who had only one point left in the World Championship table, qualified for pole position, making him the best starting point to win the World Championship title, especially since his opponent Nelson Piquet only finished fourth. The reigning world champion Alan Jones , who intended to contest his last Grand Prix this weekend, stood next to his team-mate in the front row. However, he refused to support this in the fight for the World Cup, as he still saw himself as the number one of the team and only pursued his own ambitions to win. Gilles Villeneuve qualified for third place on the grid . Alain Prost and John Watson formed the third row ahead of Patrick Tambay and Bruno Giacomelli .
run
While Jones took the lead, Reutemann fell back to fifth place behind Villeneuve, Prost and Giacomelli before the first corner. Since Villeneuve initially held up the pursuers noticeably, Jones was able to build up a lead that led to an undisputed victory for the Australian in his last race for the time being.
On the third lap Villeneuve was overtaken by Prost, on the fourth lap John Watson by Jacques Laffite. The two duelists for the world title were at this point in seventh and eighth place outside of the points. This situation would have been enough for Reutemann to win the title. Villeneuve retired on lap 23 with a defective fuel injection. At this point, however, he had already been disqualified by the race management because he had run over his start marker at the start.
From the 17th lap, however, Piquet started a race to catch up, which initially pushed him past his opponent and finally up to third place by the 33rd lap. In the meantime, Reutemann only moved up to fifth place and was relegated to sixth place shortly afterwards by Nigel Mansell . On lap 46, Giacomelli, who had meanwhile dropped to ninth place, pushed him out of the points again. On the same lap, Prost, who had dropped to sixth place after a pit stop, took second place again, displacing Piquet from third place. Giacomelli and Mansell also overtook the title contender, so that he crossed the finish line in fifth and thus received two championship points. Since Reutemann, who had headed the World Cup table for much of the season, ended up with no points in eighth place, one lap behind the winner, Nelson Piquet finally won his first World Championship title by one point.
Not least the problems within the Williams team led to the loss of the driver's title. Since Alan Jones had refused to support Carlos Reutemann and the majority of the team agreed with him, no change of position of the two in Austria and Italy were ordered. In retrospect, this stable order , which was allowed at the time, would probably have led to the Argentine's title win.
