The 1981 Monaco Grand Prix took place on May 31 and was the sixth race of the 1981 Formula 1 World Championship .

Reports

background

Nelson Piquet in the Brabham BT49C

For the sixth World Championship round, both McLaren factory drivers were equipped with the new MP4 / 1 . The Lotus team used the new Lotus 87 for the first time . Otherwise there were no changes compared to the Belgian Grand Prix , which had taken place two weeks earlier.

training

Since only 20 starting places were allowed for the race and a maximum of 26 pilots were allowed to participate in regular training, a pre-qualification had to be held for the first time since the 1979 Monaco Grand Prix , in which the five slowest of the nine participating drivers from the teams ATS , Ensign , March , Osella , Theodore and Toleman retired early.

Nelson Piquet completed a fastest time in the first of the two regular qualification training sessions that he could no longer beat. Since none of his competitors managed to do this either, he took pole position in front of Gilles Villeneuve , who came within around seven hundredths of a second to Piquet's best time during the second qualifying session. Nigel Mansell qualified for third place on the grid next to Carlos Reutemann in the new Lotus . Riccardo Patrese and Elio de Angelis formed the third row on the grid.

run

Andrea de Cesaris and Mario Andretti collided in the tight Sainte Devote curve after the start . At the top, the ranking initially remained unchanged compared to the starting grid until Mansell fell back on lap 15 due to a damage to the suspension and Reutemann had to make a pit stop due to transmission problems, which threw him back to the end of the field. This put Alan Jones in third place. On lap 20 he overtook Gilles Villeneuve and from then on put pressure on the leader Nelson Piquet.

On the 53rd lap, Piquet made a mistake while lapping a few stragglers and crashed into the barrier. Jones thereby took the lead. Lying in the lead, he had to pull into the pits on lap 67 due to a problem with the fuel supply. Villeneuve was able to catch up and finally overtake the Australian on lap 72 and thus secure the first Ferrari victory since his success at the 1979 US Grand Prix .
