The 1985 Monaco Grand Prix took place on May 19 and was the fourth race of the 1985 Formula 1 World Championship .

Reports

background

After the San Marino Grand Prix , the Toleman team, with the financial support of the new main sponsor Benetton , who signed a three-year contract, was able to acquire a contingent of tires from Pirelli , which enabled Teo Fabi to start the World Cup season late with the new Toleman TG185 . However, as the tire manufacturer refused to equip more than six teams at the same time, Spirit pilot Mauro Baldi had to forego the Monaco Grand Prix. The team then finally disappeared from Formula 1 after only 25 Grand Prix participations. Baldi also ended his Grand Prix career and from then on concentrated on the sports car world championship .

training

For the third time in a row Ayrton Senna secured pole position. Nigel Mansell followed in front of Michele Alboreto and Eddie Cheever . Alain Prost and Thierry Boutsen formed the third row ahead of Keke Rosberg and Andrea de Cesaris .

As only 20 vehicles were allowed to race on the narrow street circuit, six drivers failed to qualify.

run

Senna initially defended his top position against Mansell and Alboreto and Prost, who had passed Cheever on the way to the first corner. Further back in the field, Patrick Tambay and Stefan Johansson collided with Gerhard Berger , whose engine suddenly failed after a few meters. This ended the race for all three participants, with Johansson finishing the first lap despite a defective suspension.

By the fifth lap, Mansell fell back to seventh place behind Elio de Angelis and Keke Rosberg. This order then remained constant until the 14th lap. Then, however, the leader Senna retired due to an engine failure. Alboreto took the lead.

On the 17th lap there was a violent collision between Nelson Piquet and Riccardo Patrese in the area of the Sainte Dévote , as a result of which both drivers were eliminated. Shortly afterwards, Alboreto slipped on oil, which the two badly damaged cars had lost, and had to cover a further arc than Prost who immediately followed him and thus took the lead. Niki Lauda was also surprised by the oil trail, turned and dropped out.

After taking the lead again for a short time, Alboreto had to make a pit stop on lap 32 due to a tire damage resulting from driving over debris, which pushed him back to fourth place behind Prost, de Angelis and de Cesaris. By the end of the race he fought his way past his two compatriots to second place behind the victorious Alain Prost.
