The 1983 Monaco Grand Prix was a Formula 1 race that was held on May 15, 1983 at the Circuit de Monaco in Monaco . The race was the 5th round of the Formula 1 World Championship in 1983 .
The Finn Keke Rosberg won the race in the Williams - Cosworth ahead of the Brazilian Nelson Piquet in the Brabham - BMW . The pole sitter Alain Prost completed the podium in the Renault .
The race had many retirements, with only 7 cars in total.

The track was wet when the race started. Some teams, including Ferrari , Renault and Brabham - BMW , decided to start on wet tires. The Williams - Ford drivers , on the other hand, started on slicks .
Initially, Alain Prost took the lead. But as the track dried out more and more, the drivers decided to put on rain tires, make a pit stop and switch to dry tires. As a result, Keke Rosberg took the lead and was not overtaken until the end of the race.
Jacques Laffite was in second place but soon retired due to transmission problems. The two vehicles behind, owned by Marc Surer and Derek Warwick , fought for third position, collided in St. Devote and both were eliminated. Benefiting from this, Nelson Piquet took second place and Alain Prost completed the podium . Piquet took over the World Championship lead before Prost. The two McLaren - Ford of Niki Lauda and John Watson did not qualify for the race.
