The 1983 European Grand Prix took place on September 25th at the Brands Hatch Circuit in Great Britain and was the 14th race of the 1983 Formula 1 World Championship .
Reports
background
For the first time, a race with the sole title Grand Prix of Europe was organized as a World Championship run, after this designation had previously only been awarded as an additional honorary title to changing national Grand Prix until 1977 . Brands Hatch was chosen as the venue , which was the first time that two World Championship races were held in Great Britain within a year.
When Williams was again decided against a race for the new FW09 with Honda -Turbomotor. Instead, a third FW08C works car was reported for test driver Jonathan Palmer , making his Grand Prix debut. The Theodore Racing team, on the other hand, reduced its commitment to just one vehicle for financial reasons. Johnny Cecotto had to forego the race weekend in favor of Roberto Guerrero , so the number of training participants remained the same at 29.
Before the penultimate race of the season, Alain Prost , René Arnoux and Nelson Piquet , three drivers from three different teams had realistic chances of winning the drivers' world championship.
training
For the first time in his Grand Prix career, Elio de Angelis qualified for pole position. For the Team Lotus , this was the first pole since the Canadian Grand Prix 1978 . Behind Brabham -Pilot Riccardo Patrese followed with Nigel Mansell , the second Lotus driver also. Nelson Piquet started fourth, directly ahead of his title competitor René Arnoux. The third title contender Alain Prost followed behind Patrick Tambay and Eddie Cheever in eighth place on the grid.
The fastest of the pilots still equipped with conventional naturally aspirated engines was again the reigning world champion Keke Rosberg . He qualified for 16th place on the grid.
run
Shortly after the start, de Angelis was overtaken by Patrese. Mansell, Piquet and Cheever followed in positions three to five. On the second lap, Mansell was overtaken by Piquet. Prost passed his teammate Cheever on the ninth lap.
When de Angelis dueled Patrese for the lead on the twelfth lap, both drivers spun. Piquet took over the lead. Before Prost reached the spot, Patrese was able to continue the race in second place, while de Angelis initially dropped to sixth place and had to retire shortly afterwards.
Apart from the pit stop phase, there were no other overtaking maneuvers at the top during the rest of the race. Third place was taken by Mansell after Tambay fell back on lap 65 for technical reasons. This confirmed the competitiveness of the Lotus team this weekend after the good training result by completing the fastest race lap. Behind Andrea de Cesaris , Derek Warwick took a place in the points for the third time in a row. His team-mate Bruno Giacomelli received his first World Championship point of the year in sixth place and thus confirmed an upward trend at Toleman .
Since Alain Prost finished second, he was still in the lead in the World Cup standings before the season finale in South Africa , but only two points ahead of Nelson Piquet.
