Reports
background
Another team, Williams , tested a turbo engine between the Dutch Grand Prix and the following World Championship round in Italy . These were about the Honda -Aggregat that since the Grand Prix of Great Britain of Spirit Racing was used. While Williams decided against using the new FW09 at the Monza Grand Prix, McLaren from now on equipped both factory drivers with the TAG - Porsche engine, which has now been regarded as adequately tested .
training
Two weeks after Brabham's first pole position this season, another was achieved, this time by Riccardo Patrese . His team-mate Nelson Piquet followed in fourth place behind the two Ferrari 126C3s driven by Patrick Tambay and René Arnoux .
Keke Rosberg took 16th place and was therefore the best of those pilots who did not have a turbo engine. His team-mate Jacques Laffite failed to qualify in 28th place.
run
After a good start, at the end of the first lap, Piquet was in second place directly behind his team-mate Patrese. When he was eliminated on the third lap due to an engine failure, the Brazilian took the lead and defended it to the finish. Although he did not gain a clear advantage over his direct pursuers René Arnoux and Eddie Cheever during the entire race, he did not give them a chance to overtake because of his faultless race.
Lying in fourth position, the world championship leader Alain Prost retired on the 25th lap due to damage to the turbocharger . This put Patrick Tambay in fourth place ahead of Elio de Angelis and Derek Warwick .
For the first time since the 1967 French Grand Prix , no vehicle with a Ford Cosworth engine made it into the points.
