Reports
background
After the German Grand Prix , the Austrian Grand Prix was originally supposed to take place. Due to the lack of safety and the failed race last year, this Grand Prix was canceled, so that the Italian Grand Prix became the eighth race of the season. In the more than a month break between the races, the Gran Premio del Mediterraneo took place, which Joseph Siffert won on Brabham . This was the last edition of the Grand Prix with Formula 1 regulations, which was not part of the Automobile World Championship, and from 1967 it became a Formula 2 race.
Ferrari fielded three vehicles for the first time this season. John Surtees and Lorenzo Bandini drove the Ferrari 1512 , Nino Vaccarella the Ferrari 158 . For Vaccarella it was the only race for a works team and the last in the automobile world championship. He then continued his career in the sports car world championship . Two weeks after the Italian Grand Prix, Surtees had a serious accident during test drives in Canada and was seriously injured. For him, the season ended prematurely, he did not return until the season opener in 1966 and continued to drive for Ferrari. A third vehicle was also used at Lotus, also for an Italian driver. Alongside regular drivers Clark and Mike Spence, Giacomo Russo contested his only race of the season and the only one for Lotus in his career. A cockpit was also made available to an Italian driver at Brabham . Giancarlo Baghetti was registered for the team together with Dan Gurney and Denis Hulme . For Baghetti it was the only race of the season and the only one for Brabham. Hulme ended his season with the Italian Grand Prix and replaced Gurney at Brabham in 1966. Team owner Jack Brabham suspended a race for Baghetti, but then drove back for the rest of the season. Honda returned after a break and competed with Ronnie Bucknum and Richie Ginther .
For the teams with customer vehicles, Scuderia Centro Sud registered vehicles for a Grand Prix for the last time. The team, which had been there since 1956, then withdrew from the automobile world championship. Scuderia Centro Sud drivers were Masten Gregory , Roberto Bussinello and Giorgio Bassi . Gregory and Bussinello also drove their last race, Bassi his only. Reg Parnell Racing reported two cars for Richard Attwood and Innes Ireland , who had previously skipped a race. Frank Gardner ended the season with his last race participation. Another report came in 1968 , but Gardner did not qualify.
With Graham Hill , Clark and Surtees three former winners took part in the race, with the designers Ferrari had previously been successful six times, Cooper , BRM and Lotus once each. The drivers 'championship had already been decided in favor of Clark, the constructors' championship in favor of Lotus.
training
For the second time in a row and a total of fifth time in the season, Clark secured pole position . He was two tenths of a second faster than Surtees, who started the race from second. Stewart qualified in third place ahead of his team-mate Hill, while Bandini was fifth. In the midfield, Bucknum was in sixth place ahead of Rindt and Spence. The first ten were completed by Gurney and Siffert. Vaccarella, Baghetti and Russo qualified in the back field, the last three places were occupied by the drivers of Scuderia Centro Sud.
run
Clark won the starting duel again and led the race from Stewart, Hill and Bandini. Surtees had technical problems and dropped several places. But then the problems disappeared and Surtees improved within a short time to fifth place behind Bandini. In the five previous races, Clark always quickly set himself apart from the competition; this was not possible due to the characteristics of the track at the Autodromo Nazionale Monza. As in previous years, the long straights resulted in slipstream duels that led to many changes of position. Clark held his own for two laps before Hill took the lead. Clark countered a lap later, but was overtaken again by Hill. On lap six Stewart overtook both opponents and took the lead before Clark took the lead again just one lap later. In the following laps a duel developed between Clark and Stewart, who overtook each other four times. During this time Bassi retired with engine failure, Baghetti followed a few laps later with the same reason for retirement.
After Stewart had held the lead between lap eleven and lap 14, he was replaced by Surtees, who had previously overtaken several opponents. However, his Ferrari suffered damage to the clutch, which meant that he dropped out of the battle for first place and was later eliminated entirely. Stewart was again in first place and continued the duel with Clark. There were four more changes in leadership between these two drivers. There were more failures in midfield. Bucknum and Gardner had an engine failure, Gregory, Russo and Siffert parked their vehicles with defective transmissions. Hulme also did not reach the goal, the suspension of his Brabham broke on lap 47.
On lap 25, Hill fought his way to the top again and from then on it was three drivers, Hill, Clark and Stewart, who constantly overtook each other. Hill led the field twice for one lap, then Stewart and Clark were each ahead for four laps. After 15 more changes in leadership, Clark dropped out of the top group because the fuel pump on his Lotus failed. After six wins in a row, Clark's winning streak ended, but he was still classified in tenth place because he had already covered the necessary racing distance. Before him, Spence, Vaccarella, Bussinello and Ginther were eliminated and were also classified.
After Clark's retirement, the two BRM drivers were in the lead and continued to change positions almost every lap. The Italian Grand Prix became one of the races with the most leadership changes, with the first one being overtaken a total of 40 times.
The race decision resulted in a driving error by Hill on the last lap of the race. Stewart built up a small lead over his teammates and was the first to cross the finish line. This was Stewart's first win in the World Automobile Championship. BRM won its second race of the season and Hill's second place made it the constructor's fifth and final one-two. Stewart won the Italian Grand Prix one more time with Matra in 1968 , BRM only won again in 1971 .
The other points went to Bandini, McLaren and Attwood. For Attwood it was the first point in his career. Bonnier, Rindt and Ireland crossed the finish line in seventh to ninth place, each two laps behind. The fastest race lap was driven by Clark. In the drivers' championship, Stewart came up to one point on Hill, the first five positions did not change. There were no changes in the ranks in the constructors' championship either, BRM was 20 points ahead of Ferrari and 12 points behind Lotus. Without the cancellation rule, BRM would have only missed two points on Lotus. Stewart said of his first win that he never thought he would get this far in his first year. Furthermore, 50 years later, due to the many changes in leadership, he described it as one of the best Grand Prix of all time.
