The 2012 Italian Grand Prix took place on September 9th at the Autodromo Nazionale Monza in Monza and was the 13th race of the 2012 Formula 1 World Championship .

Reports

background

After the Belgian Grand Prix , Fernando Alonso led the drivers' standings with 24 points ahead of Sebastian Vettel and 32 points over Mark Webber . In the constructors' championship, Red Bull-Renault led by 54 points over McLaren-Mercedes and 65 points over Lotus-Renault .

At the Italian Grand Prix, Pirelli made the tire compounds P Zero Hard (silver) and P Zero Medium (white) available to the drivers , as well as Cinturato Intermediates (green) and Cinturato Full Wets (blue) for wet conditions .

There was a driver change at Lotus before this race: Romain Grosjean was banned from a race for causing a start collision at the previous Grand Prix. Jérôme D'Ambrosio , regular substitute driver for the racing team, received the cockpit for this Grand Prix.

In this race, Michael Schumacher started a Formula 1 Grand Prix for the 300th time.

With Schumacher (five times), Alonso and Vettel (twice each) three former winners competed in this Grand Prix.

The race commissioners were Silvia Bellot (ESP), Gerd Ennser (DEU), Paolo Longini (ITA) and Emanuele Pirro (ITA).

training

Schumacher set the fastest time in the first free practice, followed by Jenson Button and Nico Rosberg . Alonso and Pastor Maldonado stopped with technical problems. This training took Jules Bianchi the Force India of Paul di Resta , Valtteri Bottas the Williams of Bruno Senna and Qing Hua Ma the HRT of Narain Karthikeyan . Ma became the first Chinese to drive a Formula 1 car on a Grand Prix weekend. In the second Friday practice session, Lewis Hamilton set the fastest time. He was followed by his team-mate Button and Alonso. Alonso suffered another technical defect in this training. In the third free practice session, Hamilton again set the fastest lap. Fernando Alonso was only a thousandth of a second slower, followed by Paul di Resta. Vettel fell out with a technical defect.

Qualifying

In the first section, Alonso was the fastest pilot. Nico Hulkenberg had a technical defect and did not achieve time. He therefore failed to qualify. The race stewards later admitted him to the race. The Caterham , HRT and Marussia pilots didn't make it into the next segment. In the second section, Alonso stayed in the lead. The Toro Rosso and Williams drivers as well as D'Ambrosio, Sergio Pérez and Webber were eliminated. In the third segment, Hamilton drove the fastest lap and took pole position ahead of Button and Felipe Massa .

Di Resta and Maldonado were moved five and ten positions down on the grid, respectively. Di Resta was punished for changing the gearbox, Maldonado received two penalty transfers of five positions because he had a jump start and caused a collision at the Belgian Grand Prix.

In this qualifying, Schumacher managed to qualify for a Formula 1 Grand Prix for the 300th time.

run

Massa started the Grand Prix well and passed Button at the start. He also attempted an attack on leader Hamilton, but he successfully defended his position. While Hamilton pulled away in the following rounds, several duels developed in the background. In the fourth lap, Vettel passed Schumacher to fourth position. Schumacher was then put under pressure by Alonso, who had already worked his way up to sixth place. After several failed attempts, Alonso managed an overtaking maneuver on lap seven on the start-finish straight.

In the eighth round, Senna and di Resta dueled in the variant della Roggia . Senna dodged through the run-off zone so that there was no collision. One lap later, Vergne broke the rear of the car when braking in front of the Rettifilo and he lost control of the vehicle. He took off briefly and landed in the run-off zone. Vergne then complained of headache and back pain.

While the action had stabilized in most positions, Webber di Resta attacked in front of the Curva del Vialone and claimed tenth position in a subsequent counterattack. Webber immediately pulled away from di Resta and kept his position in front of his opponent even after a small mistake in the second Lesmo . From the drivers in the front, the Mercedes drivers began the phase of the first pit stops on lap 14. The other drivers stayed outside for the time being. In doing so, Pérez managed to overtake Kimi Raikkonen . Raikkonen then drove into the pits and made his stop on the 17th lap. Two laps later there was a similar situation between Massa and Button. First Button drove past his opponent, then Massa went to the pits. Another two laps later, Vettel and Alonso pitted. Vettel stayed in front of Alonso and both came back on the track behind Massa.

In the 24th lap, the leader, Hamilton, pitted. As his team-mate Button had already changed his tires shortly before, Pérez took the lead for five laps. In the meantime, a duel developed between Vettel and Alonso. Alonso put pressure on Vettel. In the 26th lap, Alonso tried to drive past the outside of the Curva Grande , but Vettel gave him little space, so Alonso drove through the gravel and lost some time. Alonso then had problems with the suspension, but finished. Shortly after Hamilton had passed Pérez on the start-finish straight on the 29th lap to take the lead, Alonso overtook Vettel in front of the variant della Roggia.

While Hamilton was leading the race ahead of Button, the positions behind were the Ferrari of Massa and Alonso. Vettel was given a drive-through penalty by the race management for driving unfairly. Shortly before Vettel completed this, Button retired with technical problems with the fuel pump. The fastest driver at this point was Pérez, who drove up to the Ferrari with fast laps and overtaking maneuvers. On the 40th lap, the Ferrari drivers swapped places so that Alonso got second place behind Hamilton.

After Pérez had completed more fast laps, he passed the two Ferrari drivers into second position. First he overtook Massa on the 43rd lap on the back straight. In the 46th lap he left Alonso behind in front of the Curva del Vialone. Although Pérez was able to drive faster laps than Hamilton, to catch up with him, he was no longer successful.

Shortly before the end of the race, Vettel, Webber and Hülkenberg retired with technical problems. Since they had completed enough laps, they were counted. At Vettel it was another defect in the alternator , which had a defect on Saturday morning.

Hamilton finally won about four seconds ahead of Pérez. Alonso, Massa and Raikkonen followed in the places behind. Schumacher and Rosberg in sixth and seventh were the only drivers in the top 10 who pitted twice. Rosberg also drove the fastest lap. The remaining points went to di Resta, Kamui Kobayashi and Senna. Senna only took the last point position on the home straight, as Daniel Ricciardo , who had previously occupied the position, no longer accelerated from the last corner with a technical problem with the fuel supply.

While Alonso retained the lead in the World Cup, there were several postponements behind him. Vettel and Webber lost second and third place to Hamilton and Raikkonen. In the constructors' category, Ferrari took third position from Lotus, while the first two positions remained unchanged.
