backgrounds
After the Belgian Grand Prix , Lewis Hamilton led the drivers' standings with nine points ahead of Nico Rosberg and with 81 points ahead of Daniel Ricciardo . In the constructors' championship, Mercedes led with 181 points ahead of Red Bull and with 203 points ahead of Ferrari .
At the Italian Grand Prix, Pirelli provided the drivers with the tire compounds P Zero Medium (white), P Zero Soft (yellow) and P Zero Supersoft (red), as well as Cinturato Intermediates (green) and Cinturato Full Wets (blue) for wet conditions .
Compared to the previous year, there was only one change to the route: The exit zone of the Curva del Vialone was paved.
There were two DRS zones that remained unchanged compared to the previous year. The first zone was behind the second Curva di Lesmos , the measuring point was 95 meters before the curve. The measuring point for the second zone was 20 meters in front of the Curva Parabolica , the DRS zone was on the start-finish straight and began 115 meters behind the finish line.
Esteban Gutiérrez , Daniil Kwjat , Kimi Räikkönen (five each), Valtteri Bottas , Marcus Ericsson , Nico Hülkenberg , Felipe Nasr , Rosberg, Pascal Wehrlein (four each), Max Verstappen (three), Fernando Alonso , Romain Grosjean , Jolyon Palmer and Sebastian Vettel (two of each) went into the race weekend with penalty points.
With Vettel, Hamilton (three times each) and Alonso (twice), three former winners competed in this Grand Prix.
The race stewards were José Abed (MEX), Garry Connelly (AUS), Tom Kristensen (DEN) and Paolo Longoni (ITA).
Ferrari and Haas used a further developed drive unit for the first time at this Grand Prix, for which Ferrari used the last three available tokens . Ferrari was the first engine manufacturer to use up its tokens for the season.
training
In the first free practice, Rosberg set the fastest time in 1: 22.959 minutes, ahead of Hamilton and Raikkonen. Jenson Button , Pérez and Verstappen tested the Halo system again during this training .
In the second free practice, Hamilton was fastest in 1: 22.801 minutes ahead of Rosberg and Vettel.
In the third free practice session, Hamilton was again fastest in 1: 22.008 minutes ahead of Rosberg and Vettel. Grosjean turned and hit the barrier, after which the gearbox on his Haas had to be changed.
Qualifying
The qualifying consisted of three parts with a net running time of 45 minutes. In the first qualifying segment (Q1), the drivers had 18 minutes to qualify for the race. All drivers who achieved a time in the first section that was a maximum of 107 percent of the fastest lap time qualified for the Grand Prix. The best 16 drivers reached the next part. Hamilton was fastest. Ocon parked his car at the edge of the track with a technical defect and did not set any time, so he did not qualify for the Grand Prix. Besides him, the Renault and Sauber drivers and Kwjat were eliminated.
The second section (Q2) lasted 15 minutes. The ten fastest pilots qualified for the third part of qualifying. Hamilton was fastest. Just like Rosberg, he drove his best time on the soft compound. Carlos Sainz Jr. , the McLaren drivers, Wehrlein, Grosjean and Felipe Massa were eliminated. With Gutiérrez, a Haas driver reached Q3 for the first time.
The final section (Q3) lasted twelve minutes, during which the first ten starting positions were awarded. Hamilton set the fastest time with a lap time of 1: 21.135 minutes ahead of Rosberg and Vettel. It was Hamilton's 56th pole position, including the seventh of the season.
Grosjean was moved five starting positions down after the third free practice session because of the gear change.
run
Rosberg won the race ahead of Hamilton and Vettel. It was the 21st victory for Rosberg in the Formula 1 World Championship, including the seventh of the season. In addition, Rosberg was on the podium for the 50th time. Hamilton reached eleventh place on the podium in the fourteenth race of the season, Vettel sixth. The remaining points were achieved by Raikkonen, Ricciardo, Bottas, Verstappen, Pérez, Massa and Hülkenberg. This meant that only the top ten drivers in the drivers' championship achieved the points, which were also competing for the top five designers.
In the drivers 'and constructors' championships, the first three places remained unchanged.
