Haas F1 Team , originally Haas Formula , is an American motorsport team that has participated in the Formula 1 World Championship since 2016 .
history
History of origin
The initiator of the project is the American entrepreneur Gene Haas , who owns the large Californian machine tool manufacturer Haas Automation . Haas has been involved in motor racing since 2002 . His newly formed Haas CNC Racing team participated in the NASCAR series for a number of years before merging with Tony Stewart's racing team in 2009 . Since then the team has been running under the name Stewart-Haas Racing . The racing team is based in Kannapolis ( North Carolina ).
In January 2014, four years after the previous US Formula 1 project with Peter Windsor's US F1 team failed, Haas announced a commitment to Formula 1 . He founded a racing team initially called Haas Formula, which was renamed Haas F1 in September 2014. In April 2014, Haas deposited a $ 20 million security deposit required by the FIA to confirm the seriousness of his project. The head office of the team is in the USA; however, the races should be organized from a base in Great Britain . Haas had been looking for a location in Europe since mid-2014, and in January 2015 the team acquired the former factory of the Marussia team in Banbury, UK .
Haas works closely with Scuderia Ferrari . The cooperation goes further than that of other customer teams. Haas procures a substantial part of the technical components from Ferrari. In addition to the engine, the transmission and numerous other components are also taken over by Ferrari. The team management speaks of “comprehensive technical support”. Observers refer to Haas as "Ferrari's B-Team".
The racing car was to be designed by Dallara in Italy after initial planning ; The team refrained from doing so in spring 2014. Instead, the plans envisaged a development of the car in the USA. Haas signed the South Tyrolean Günther Steiner , who had already held this position a few years earlier at Jaguar and its successor Red Bull , as team manager.
Haas initially planned to start in Formula 1 in 2015 . In spring 2014, the team announced the postponement of the debut to the following year.
2016 season
In his debut season, Haas competed with the VF-16 . According to Gene Haas, the name is derived from his first machine sold by Haas Automotive, "very first one", "VF-1" for short, and the "6" for the year of the current season. The car used numerous components from Ferrari. In addition to the drive unit, Haas also bought the transmission, suspension, wheel carriers, hydraulics, steering, electronics and the driver's seat from Scuderia. The drivers were Romain Grosjean and Esteban Gutiérrez . Test driver was Santino Ferrucci .
In the team’s debut race in Australia , Grosjean and Gutiérrez qualified for the penultimate row. In the race Gutiérrez retired after a collision with Fernando Alonso ( McLaren ) on lap 16, which resulted in the race being interrupted. Grosjean, on the other hand, finished the race in sixth place without having completed a regular pit stop . Haas made the best debut for a newly formed team since Toyota joined 14 years earlier . Two weeks later in Bahrain , Grosjean, who started from ninth position, came in fifth, while Gutiérrez (starting position 13) retired again due to a brake defect. In the further course of the season Grosjean achieved three more places in the points, Gutiérrez remained with four eleventh places as the best results without points. Haas finished eighth in the constructors 'championship, Grosjean was 13th in the drivers' championship.
2017 season
The contract with Grosjean was extended early for the 2017 season, and Kevin Magnussen was signed by Renault . With a few placements in the points, especially in the first half of the season, eighth place could be achieved again in the constructors' championship. Romain Grosjean finished 13th in the drivers' standings with 28 points. His best result was a sixth place in the Austrian Grand Prix . Magnussen was 14th in the drivers' standings with 19 points. His best results were a seventh place and three more eighth places.
2018 season
In its third season in 2018 , the team competed with the VF-18 , which, like its predecessors, used Ferrari technology in the drive area. The driver pairing consisted of Romain Grosjean and Kevin Magnussen.
Grosjean achieved fourth place in Austria, the best result of the Haas team to date. At the Singapore Grand Prix 2018 Kevin Magnussen made the first fastest race lap for Haas.
During the summer break after the Hungarian Grand Prix , the racing team had already scored 51 points in the constructors' championship, surpassing the overall results for 2016 and 2017. With a total of 93 points, Haas finished the 2018 season in fifth place in the constructors' championship. In the drivers' championship, Grosjean finished 14th with 37 points. Magnussen, whose best results were two fifth places, was ninth in the drivers' standings with 56 points.
Season 2019
There were no personnel changes for the 2019 season .
After "Haas Automotive" was the main sponsor of its own team for the first three years, it was the first time that an external main sponsor was involved. The British energy drink manufacturer Rich Energy now acted as such, was also included in the team name and significantly influenced the paintwork of the car, which in its black and gold design was supposed to be reminiscent of the past "JPS" look of Team Lotus from the 1970s .
Romain Grosjean had major problems with the reliability of the VF-19 at the beginning of the season , and otherwise they fell far short of expectations.
On July 10, the week before the British Grand Prix, a statement from Rich Energy appeared on Twitter that the company would unilaterally terminate its sponsorship deal with Haas. Rich Energy later distanced itself from this statement. It is only due to a single employee who does not represent the general opinion of the company. Magnussen had crossed the finish line behind an inferior Williams at the previous Austrian Grand Prix. After the Italian Grand Prix , Haas announced the amicable separation from Rich Energy . After frequent placements in the previous year, this year there were only a few places in the top ten. The best result of the season came from Kevin Magnussen in sixth place right at the start of the season in Australia . At the end of the season Haas finished ninth overall with 28 points, while Magnussen was 16th (20 points) and Grosjean 18th (8 points) in the drivers' championship.
2020 season
The driver pairing will remain the same for the 2020 season , with Louis Delétraz and Pietro Fittipaldi now being test and reserve drivers . Both made their debut in Haas Formula 1 cars during a Pirelli test in Abu Dhabi in 2018 and should be announced at the season opening in Australia , which was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic . The season finally began in Austria at the Red Bull Ring . The Styrian Grand Prix followed a week later on this route . Haas is currently in ninth place with one point in the constructors' championship after the seventh race.
