report
backgrounds
After the Australian Grand Prix , Sebastian Vettel led the drivers' standings with seven points ahead of Lewis Hamilton and ten points ahead of Valtteri Bottas . In the constructors' championship, Ferrari was four points ahead of Mercedes and 27 points ahead of Red Bull .
At the Chinese Grand Prix, Pirelli provided the drivers with the tire compounds P Zero Medium (white), P Zero Soft (yellow) and P Zero Supersoft (red) as well as Cinturato Intermediates (green) and Cinturato Full Wets (blue) for wet conditions . Since the order for the tires of each compound available to each driver had to be placed before the test drives before the season, the FIA determined in advance that each driver would receive seven sets of super soft , four sets of soft and two sets of medium .
Compared to the previous year, there were several small changes to the track, in turn one and turn eight additional tire stacks were installed in 2017 due to the higher cornering speeds of the vehicles. In turn two , a new strip of grass pavers was laid between the racetrack and the asphalt run-off zone , which is intended to prevent drivers from leaving the track. In addition, there, as well as in curve three and curve twelve , further curbs five centimeters higher were inserted behind the existing curbs , three meters long and about one meter wide. In addition, the route was re-paved in the area of the start-finish straight .
The DRS zones remained unchanged compared to the previous year, the measuring point for the first zone was 35 meters before turn 16 , the zone itself was on the start-finish straight and began 98 meters after the last curve. The measuring point for the second DRS zone was in turn twelve , the DRS was then allowed to be activated 752 meters before turn 14 .
After skipping the race in Australia, Pascal Wehrlein was also replaced by Antonio Giovinazzi at the Chinese Grand Prix .
Daniil Kwjat (eight), Vettel (six), Carlos Sainz jr. (five), Kevin Magnussen , Esteban Ocon , Jolyon Palmer (four each), Sergio Pérez (three each), Bottas, Marcus Ericsson , Nico Hülkenberg , Felipe Massa , Kimi Räikkönen (two each) and Max Verstappen (one) went with penalty points into the race weekend.
With Hamilton (four times), Fernando Alonso (twice), Raikkonen and Vettel (once each), four former winners competed in this Grand Prix.
The race stewards were Paul Gutjahr (CHE), Zheng Honghai (CHN), Mika Salo (FIN) and Vincenzo Spano (VEN).
free training
In the first free practice session, Verstappen set the fastest time with a lap time of 1: 50.491 minutes ahead of Massa and Lance Stroll . Due to rain and smog , the training was interrupted twice for long periods of time for safety reasons, as the rescue helicopter could not have landed in the area of the responsible hospital due to the poor visibility . In the remaining 22 minutes, only 14 drivers drove a timed lap.
The second free practice session was canceled for the same reasons.
In the third free practice session, Vettel set the fastest lap time in 1: 33.336 minutes ahead of Räikkönen and Bottas.
Qualifying
The qualifying consisted of three parts with a net running time of 45 minutes. In the first qualifying segment (Q1), the drivers had 18 minutes to qualify for the race. All drivers who achieved a time in the first section that was a maximum of 107 percent of the fastest lap time qualified for the Grand Prix. The best 15 drivers reached the next part. Vettel was fastest. The Ferrari drivers achieved their time on soft tires, everyone else drove Supersoft . Verstappen complained about a problem with his engine over the pit radio. Grosjean and Giovinazzi spun out of turn 16 on their timed laps , Giovinazzi hit the lane and seriously damaged his car. Since this happened just before the end of the section, most of the other riders failed to improve. Grosjean and Palmer improved nonetheless, which is why the race stewards started investigations against them. Ocon, Verstappen, Palmer, Grosjean and Vandoorne were eliminated.
The second section (Q2) lasted 15 minutes and started ten minutes late due to the Giovinazzi accident. The ten fastest pilots qualified for the third part of qualifying. Raikkonen was fastest. Giovinazzi, who did not set any time after his accident, Ericsson, Alonso, Magnussen and Sainz were eliminated.
The last section (Q3) lasted twelve minutes, in which the first ten starting positions were assigned. Hamilton set the fastest time with a lap time of 1: 31.678 minutes ahead of Vettel and Bottas. It was Hamilton's 63rd pole position and the fastest lap time ever on this track. Hamilton also achieved his sixth pole position at the Chinese Grand Prix.
Grosjean and Palmer were moved back five take-off positions for ignoring the double-waved yellow flags; both received three penalty points. Giovinazzi was also moved five places back because his gearbox was changed.
run
Before the start, the track was wet, but no more rain fell. Sainz was the only driver to opt for dry tires, he started on Supersoft . All other pilots used intermediates . At the end of the warm-up lap, Palmer also switched to dry tires.
At the start, Vettel was at his starting position offset by about one meter. The race stewards investigated this later, but did not issue a penalty. Hamilton stayed ahead of Vettel and Bottas, Ricciardo overtook Raikkonen and was now fourth. In the back of the field, Verstappen overtook several pilots, and Pérez collided with Stroll. While Pérez drove on, Stroll retired with a broken suspension. At the end of the first lap, Hülkenberg switched to soft tires and fell back to last place behind Sainz, who had lost many positions on dry tires and had also spun. So that the vehicle could be recovered by Stroll, the race management announced a virtual safety car phase .
One lap later, Vettel, Kwjat, Alonso, Massa, Pérez, Magnussen, Ericsson, Ocon, Grosjean, Giovinazzi and Vandoorne switched to dry tires. Grosjean left the pit lane immediately before Hulkenberg, who overlooked this and overtook Grosjean. At the end of the lap the race was released again. On the still damp road, Giovinazzi lost control of his Sauber on the start-finish straight and hit the lane. Since various debris was lying on the track, the safety car was sent out and the field was led through the pit lane behind the safety car. At this point in time, Hulkenberg attacked the Ericsson driving in front of him and overtook him. All drivers who had still fitted intermediates use the safety car phase to change tires.
Hamilton was now in front of Ricciardo, Raikkonen, Verstappen, Bottas, Vettel, Sainz, Alonso, Kwjat and Massa. The race was reopened at the end of lap seven. Bottas spun while warming up the tires and dropped back to twelfth place. Pérez overtook Massa and Kwjat immediately after the race was open, while Verstappen passed Raikkonen.
Hülkenberg received a five-second time penalty for overtaking Grosjean, a ten-second time penalty for overtaking Ericsson and two penalty points for each offense. Hamilton and Bottas drove the fastest laps of the race, so Hamilton took the lead. Bottas overtook Magnussen on lap 18 and was now ninth.
Vettel overtook Raikkonen on lap 20 and Ricciardo two laps later, with the tires touching lightly. Bottas caught up with Alonso and overtook him on lap 25. Vettel caught up with Verstappen and put him under pressure. Verstappen, whose Supersoft tires were already badly worn, braked himself so that Vettel passed. Verstappen later switched to Supersoft again and fell back to sixth place. With the fresh tires he caught up with Bottas and overtook him on lap 33. At the end of the lap Ricciardo also switched to Supersoft again , he was now in sixth place. Vettel switched to soft on lap 34 , Raikkonen passed him. Alonso parked his vehicle with a technical defect. Another lap later, Bottas switched to soft and was now seventh, after which Hamilton switched to soft again , he remained in the lead. Then Raikkonen, the last driver in the top group, changed tires and drove Supersoft for the last stint .
Raikkonen caught up with Sainz and overtook him, and Bottas also passed Sainz on lap 44. Ocon overtook Massa and was now tenth, Magnussen overtook Pérez and was eighth. Massa and Pérez switched to Supersoft again on lap 49 .
Hamilton won the race ahead of Vettel and Verstappen. It was Hamilton's 54th victory in the Formula 1 World Championship. Since he started from pole position, led every lap of the race and drove the fastest race lap, he achieved a so-called Grand Slam . Verstappen took the first podium since the 2016 Brazilian Grand Prix . Ricciardo, Räikkönen, Bottas, Sainz, Magnussen, Pérez and Ocon achieved the remaining points. Magnussen scored his first points for the Haas team.
In the drivers 'standings, Hamilton and Vettel were now tied ahead of Verstappen, while Mercedes was ahead of Ferrari and Red Bull Racing in the constructors' standings.
