The Williams FW40 is the Formula 1 - racing cars of Williams for the Formula 1 World Championship 2017 . First photos and a video of the car were published on February 17, 2017 via the team's official Twitter account, and the official presentation took place on February 25, 2017 in Barcelona .
The name of the car is made up of the initials of the team founder Frank Williams and the number 40 as a reference to the team's fortieth anniversary.
Technology and development
Like all Formula 1 vehicles of 2017, the FW40 is a rear-wheel drive monoposto with a monocoque made of carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) . In addition to the monocoque, many other parts of the vehicle, including body parts and the steering wheel, are made of CFRP. The brake discs are also made from a composite material reinforced with carbon fibers.
The FW40 is the successor to the FW38 . As the technical regulations changed significantly for the 2017 season, most of the vehicle has been redeveloped. In order to have resources available for this, the further development of the previous model was stopped early.
With a total width of 2000 mm and a width between the front and rear axles of 1600 mm, the vehicle is 200 mm wider than the previous model. The height is unchanged at 950 mm. Completely new are the front wing , which is now 1800 mm wide instead of 1650 mm, the rear wing , the width of which changes from 750 mm to 950 mm and the height of which changes from 950 mm to 800 mm, and the diffuser , which now has a total height of 175 mm instead of 125 mm and a width of 1050 mm increased by 50 mm. At 3554 mm, the vehicle has the shortest wheelbase of all Formula 1 cars of the 2017 season. To improve the air flow to the rear wing, the car has a noticeable fin on the engine cover. In addition, a wing is attached to the end of this fin .
Is driven from the FW40 Mercedes-AMG F1 M08 + EQ Power , one in center of the vehicle built-in 1.6-liter V-6 engine of Mercedes with a turbocharger and a 120 kW strong electric motor , so it is a hybrid electric vehicle . The sequential transmission of the car, developed by Williams himself, has eight gears. The gear change is triggered by paddles on the steering wheel. The vehicle has only two pedals, an accelerator pedal (right) and a brake pedal (left). Just like many other functions, the clutch , which is only used when starting from a standstill, is operated via a lever on the steering wheel.
Unlike the previous model, the FW40 is equipped with 305 mm wide front tires and 405 mm wide rear tires from the standard supplier Pirelli , which are mounted on 13-inch wheels. This means that the tires on the front axle and 80 mm on the rear axle are 60 mm wider than in the previous season. This also required the development of new wheel suspensions for the FW40. The brake discs are made of silicon carbide ceramic reinforced with carbon fibers .
Like all Formula 1 vehicles since 2011 , the FW40 has a Drag Reduction System (DRS), which reduces the drag of the vehicle on the straights by flattening part of the rear wing , if it is allowed to be used. The DRS is also activated with a switch on the steering wheel of the car.
Painting and sponsorship
Like its predecessor, the FW40 is mainly painted in white, with stripes based on the logo of the main sponsor Martini in different shades of blue with a slightly wider red central stripe that run from the front wing attachment to the engine cover. The Martini logo is also attached to the rear wing, otherwise the front and rear wings are painted black.
The Unilever Group advertises its Rexona brand on the front wing, side pods and front suspension, and the vehicle also features sponsor stickers from Avanade , Hackett London , Joseph Cyril Bamford , Oris , Pirelli and Randstad .
driver
Williams will be back in the 2017 season with Felipe Massa , who originally announced his end of career in the Formula 1 World Championship at the end of the preseason. However, after Valtteri Bottas left the team and announced his move to Mercedes , Massa decided to run for Williams again. His teammate is Lance Stroll , who won the European Formula 3 Championship last year and is making his debut in the Formula 1 World Championship.
At the Hungarian Grand Prix , Massa was replaced by Paul di Resta due to illness .
