As part of the jointly developed overall concept, Williams built the chassis, transmission and running gear, BMW built the engine and the electronic control.

The aerodynamically optimized chassis consists of a composite material made of epoxy resin reinforced with carbon and aramid fibers . An outer skin made of Kevlar , a high-strength para-aramid fiber, also increases stability. Despite the lightweight construction, the weight of the car including the driver was not allowed to fall below 600 kg due to regulations.

The successor to the car for the 2002 season was the Williams FW24 .

Painting and sponsorship

The basic colors of the FW23 were white on the monocoque and the engine cover and blue on the side box, as well as the front and rear wings. In addition to the main sponsor Compaq , there were also sponsor stickers from Allianz , Castrol , Nortel Networks , WorldCom , Petrobras , Reuters and Veltins .

driver

As driver for the FW23, the choice fell again on Ralf Schumacher (No. 5) as well as Juan Pablo Montoya (No. 6), who is new to Formula 1 , who replaced Jenson Button . Marc Gené was the test and reserve driver .

2001 season

In his second year with BMW, Williams was able to keep up with the speed of the competition. The engine - the newly developed 10-cylinder V-engine BMW P80 - was one of the most powerful in the field. With the WilliamsF1 BMW W23-05 Ralf Schumacher won 2001 victories at the Grand Prix of San Marino , at the Canadian Grand Prix and the Grand Prix of Germany and second place at the French Grand Prix . Formula 1 newcomer Juan Pablo Montoya won the Italian Grand Prix . However, there were problems with the reliability, so that at the end of the season there was a failure rate of more than 50%. As in the previous year, they took third place in the constructors' championship .
