Reports
background
After the European Grand Prix , Michael Schumacher led the drivers' standings with 24 points ahead of David Coulthard and 42 points ahead of Rubens Barrichello . Ferrari led the constructors' championship with 41 points ahead of McLaren-Mercedes and with 57 points ahead of Williams-BMW .
With Michael Schumacher (four times), Heinz-Harald Frentzen and Coulthard (once each), three former winners competed for this Grand Prix.
training
In the first free practice, Coulthard set the fastest time ahead of Eddie Irvine and Jacques Villeneuve .
Michael Schumacher won the second free practice session. Ralf Schumacher was second fastest, ahead of David Coulthard.
Qualifying
Ralf Schumacher set the fastest time in qualifying and thus secured the first pole position of his career. Michael Schumacher drove only a hundredth of a second slower and started from position two. McLaren driver David Coulthard set the third fastest time.
Warm up
The fastest time in the warm up was Mika Häkkinen . He was followed by Ferrari drivers Michael Schumacher and Barrichello.
run
During the pre-start to the formation lap stopped Hakkinen - the engine of his McLaren-Mercedes had gone out. Häkkinen's mechanics were unable to restart the car, so he and his car were pushed into the pit lane . Since the mechanics there couldn't get the McLaren running again, Häkkinen had to stop the race.
During the induction lap, Pedro de la Rosa suddenly became slow. His Jaguar had problems with propulsion. However, he managed to slowly follow the field and into the pits, where the problem was fixed. De la Rosa took up the race again with a long gap.
When the race was released, Ralf Schumacher started well. Michael Schumacher behind initially had problems keeping Coulthard behind him. Juan Pablo Montoya managed to overtake Jarno Trulli in the first corner and was fourth. Barrichello also made up positions - after the first two corners he had already overtaken Frentzen and Trulli.
After the first lap, Ralf was leading in front of Michael Schumacher, Coulthard, Montoya, Barrichello and Trulli.
In the following laps, the drivers at the front of the field drove similar lap times, so that no driver could attempt to overtake.
On lap six, Villeneuve's BAR Honda slowed and coasted. Irvine drove faster than the man in front, Olivier Panis . While Irvine had an advantage in the slower corners, Panis was faster on the straights, so there was no way Irvine could get past the end of the long straight. On lap 21 he started to overtake in the last corner and passed Panis. In the meantime, Enrique Bernoldi had rolled out with an engine failure and finished his race.
From lap 19, Ralf Schumacher set better lap times than his brother behind him and had gained a small lead. The laps also worked better with Ralf. On lap 24 he came in for the first pit stop. Meanwhile, Michael Schumacher stayed out two laps longer. His pit stop, however, was faster than Ralf's, so that Michael, despite Ralf's advantage, came back out on the track ahead of his brother.
One lap later, David Coulthard also made his pit stop and came out behind Ralf Schumacher. However, shortly thereafter, he received a stop-and-go penalty for driving too fast in the pit lane. Coulthard completed this penalty at the end of the 32nd lap. Meanwhile, Michael Schumacher drove significantly faster times than Ralf Schumacher.
Until lap 30, Juan Pablo Montoya was the only one of the drivers at the sprayer of the field who had not yet made the pit stop. His lap times had already decreased and he was losing a lot of time. After his pit stop, he came back on track in fifth behind Barrichello. Michael Schumacher, meanwhile, was able to significantly increase his lead over Ralf.
Ralf Schumacher had problems with his tires at this point in the race, so Rubens Barrichello put a lot of pressure on from lap 35. However, since he couldn't get past him and Montoya was clearly catching up time behind him, Ferrari decided to switch to a three-stop strategy and make a short pit stop.
A few laps later, Montoya caught up with Ralf. In order to avoid an overtaking maneuver, Ralf Schumacher's second pit stop was preferred by the team.
After Michael Schumacher also completed his second pit stop a few laps later, Montoya led briefly. After his pit stop, however, he fell behind Ralf again.
With 20 laps to go, Montoya suddenly slowed down and parked his car with an engine failure. Barrichello made his third and final pit stop a little later and came back on the track in third position, just ahead of David Coulthard. Coulthard stayed right behind Barrichello until the end of the race.
Michael Schumacher finally won his 50th Grand Prix in front of his brother Ralf Schumacher and Rubens Barrichello. The remaining points went to David Coulthard, Jarno Trulli and Nick Heidfeld.
