Qualifying

Warm up
In the warm-up there was a double lead of the McLaren drivers with Coulthard in front of Häkkinen. Michael Schumacher took third position.
run
The start was similar to the start of the previous Grand Prix in Canada. Coulthard had a better start, but Michael Schumacher prevented the loss of leadership by changing lines. Coulthard was put under pressure by Barrichello himself and had to give up second place. Behind them, Häkkinen managed to maintain his position and Jacques Villeneuve and Frentzen moved into fifth and sixth after an overtaking maneuver against Ralf Schumacher . In the early stages of the race, Schumacher pulled away from Barrichello, who did not let the McLaren drivers by.
After 16 laps Ricardo Zonta retired after a spin. Four laps later, Johnny Herbert's race ended with a gearbox failure. On the 21st lap, Coulthard tried to pass Barrichello, but he still didn't succeed. He tried one more lap later and managed to overtake Barrichello in the Adelaide hairpin. During the pit stops that followed, Coulthard took over the lead position for one lap, but after the pit stop had to move back into position behind Michael Schumacher. Since Barrichello's stop did not go optimally, Häkkinen also managed to pass the Ferrari driver.
In the following laps Michael Schumacher had problems with his tires, which were full of blisters. Therefore, Coulthard managed to catch up on Michael Schumacher. During this, Häkkinen broke away from Barrichello and caught up with the leading pilots. Coulthard tried to overtake Michael Schumacher first in the Adelaide hairpin on the outside. Michael Schumacher chose the better line and defended his position. In the meantime, Häkkinen was already open to the leadership duo and Barrichello also caught up with the leaders. In the 39th lap, Coulthard finally managed to take the lead. While Michael Schumacher, Häkkinen and Barrichello were involved in battles for positions in the following laps, Coulthard increased his lead over his opponents. In the meantime, both Arrows pilots with a power transmission defect as well as Gastón Mazzacane and Alexander Wurz had retired after a spin.
There were no shifts at the head of the field during the second pit stops. However, Barrichello had a problem with his stop and fell several seconds behind Häkkinen. Michael Schumacher benefited from the tire change because he got along better with the new set. Coulthard continued to pull away, but Michael Schumacher kept a lead over Häkkinen. After 58 laps, Michael Schumacher finally retired with engine failure.
Coulthard finally achieved his third win of the season ahead of his teammate Häkkinen. Barrichello finished in third place. The other points went to Villeneuve, Ralf Schumacher and Jarno Trulli .
In the world championship, Coulthard and Häkkinen shortened their deficit on Michael Schumacher. The first three positions also remained unchanged in the constructors' championship. However, McLaren caught up here too.
