The Ferrari F1-2000 was the Formula 1 - racing cars from Ferrari for the 2000 season , took part in all 17 races of the season. It was Ferrari's 49th Formula 1 car and, with Michael Schumacher as driver, it was the first Scuderia vehicle with a driver's title since 1979 .
Technology and development
Technical management
The technical director for development was Ross Brawn . He was responsible for Rory Byrne and Aldo Costa for the construction and Nicolas Tombazis for the aerodynamic shape of the car. The engine engineer in charge was Paolo Martinelli , whose team consisted of 135 technicians.
Development and course during the season
The F1-2000 was derived directly from the previous year's model F399, but underwent some clearly visible changes to the body. Unlike in the previous year, the vehicle was developed entirely with the help of a wind tunnel and was overall more angular and sloping towards the front wing. The underside of the wing was even flatter than last year, which improved the airflow under the car. The engine cooling has also been improved this year. During the season, the car was constantly developed, so a new front wing was used from the US Grand Prix and larger air baffles, so-called bargeboards , were installed from the French Grand Prix .
engine
With the Tipo 049, Ferrari used a V10 naturally aspirated engine developed in-house. It had a displacement of 2997 cm³, a 90 ° cylinder bank angle and, thanks to a special aluminum alloy, only weighed 102 kg, around 10 kg less than in the previous year. The large cylinder bank angle made it possible to move the center of gravity of the car further down and to shape the rear in a more aerodynamically effective manner, which benefited the car's handling. In racing mode, the engine developed around 574 kW (770 hp ) at 18,000 rpm , weighed around 100 kg and was 615 mm long, 598 mm wide and 366 mm high.
In terms of performance, the engine was weaker than the counterpart of its biggest competitor for the world championship, Mercedes, but the Tipo 049 was able to achieve much higher speeds. Two major improvements to the engine were developed and implemented during the season. These engines were called Tipo 049B and 049C and could in the end achieve up to 619 kW (830 PS ) with an approximate top speed of 350 km / h. The 049C was also used the next season .
Transmission and suspension
The self-developed sequential electro-hydraulic semi-automatic transmission with shift paddles on the steering wheel had seven gears and was largely taken over from last year's car. The car had an in-house launch control and traction control system . A double wishbone axle with internal springs and shock absorbers , actuated by push rods , was used as the wheel suspension at the front and rear .
Suppliers
Aside from the engine and the transmission, Ferrari procured many components from external companies. The petrol and motor oil were supplied by Shell , the brakes by Brembo and the tires by Bridgestone . Magneti Marelli was responsible for the complex engine control.
Racing history
After the narrow season finale in 1999, Ferrari wanted to catch up with McLaren Mercedes in terms of technology and, after a long time, win a driver's title again, having already achieved the constructors' title last year. The F1-2000 was presented to the public for the first time on February 7, 2000 at 10:30 am in Maranello . Around 800 people were present, including around 400 journalists and 45 different television stations. The president of the Fiat group Gianni Agnelli was also there .
Like its predecessors, the car proved to be competitive and outperformed the McLaren vehicles that had been superior in previous years and had problems with reliability this year. During the entire season, the F1-2000 failed a total of eight times, twice due to engine defects.
Michael Schumacher won his first world title for Ferrari with nine wins from 17 races, and this was also the first driver's world title for Ferrari after 21 years, when Jody Scheckter became world champion with Ferrari in 1979 . With 180 world championship points, Ferrari also won the constructor's title.
Painting and sponsorship
The car was painted completely red, only part of the front and rear wing was kept white. On the nose, the front and rear wing and the airbox, there was advertising for the long-term sponsor partner Marlboro . The side pods advertised the gasoline supplier Shell and FedEx , Magneti Marelli , Fiat and Tic Tac , and the side of the front wing for TIM .
driver
Regular drivers were Michael Schumacher and Rubens Barrichello , who replaced Eddie Irvine who had migrated to Jaguar . Last year's Minardi driver Luca Badoer was nominated as test and reserve driver .
Further use of the chassis
There were eight different chassis in total. A chassis used by Rubens Barrichello was exhibited in Ferrari's own “Museo Ferrari” and in the Design Museum London . Michael Schumacher's own private collection includes a chassis that he himself drove. Another Schumacher chassis is on display at Ferrari World in Abu Dhabi .
In mid-May 2012, the auction company Sotheby’s auctioned a racing Ferrari chassis with the number 204 in Monaco , driven by Michael Schumacher at the Austrian Grand Prix , for 806,400 euros. Ferrari originally kept the chassis until 2006, when it first changed hands.
In mid-August 2014, Sotheby's also auctioned a racing Ferrari chassis with the number 198 in Monterey , driven by Michael Schumacher in the races he won in Brazil , Spain and Monaco , for 1.804,000 euros.
