Qualifying
Another best time followed in qualifying by Michael Schumacher, who achieved pole position ahead of Häkkinen and Barrichello.
Warm up
Michael Schumacher was also the fastest pilot in the warm-up and was therefore in the lead after every training session. Häkkinen and Barrichello followed in second and third place.
run
At the start Michael Schumacher didn't get off to a good start, but with a change of line he kept Hakkinen behind. His brother Ralf Schumacher, on the other hand, had a better start and overtook Barrichello on the inside and then Coulthard on the outside. For Pedro Diniz , the race was over on the first lap after a spin. A lap later, Pedro de la Rosa and Jean Alesi , who collided, were eliminated.
The top group quickly split into three groups. At the front, Michael Schumacher and Häkkinen gradually set themselves apart from the rest of the field. Ralf Schumacher stopped Coulthard and Barrichello behind. Behind the three pilots there was again a bigger gap because Villeneuve Heinz-Harald Frentzen , Jarno Trulli and Jenson Button were holding up. This order remained until the 21st lap when Villeneuve had to retire with an engine failure. Three laps later, Michael Schumacher came into the pits with a lead of three seconds over Häkkinen. Since he left too early, he slightly injured the gas station attendant. A lap later, Barrichello and Coulthard followed with their pit stop. Ferrari had reacted in the meantime and installed the replacement tank attendant. Coulthard stopped a little longer and Barrichello managed to drive past him. Ralf Schumacher retained his position in front of the two even after his pit stop. After Jos Verstappen retired on lap 26 with a gearbox failure, Häkkinen also pitted. Michael Schumacher was able to take the lead again, but his lead over Häkkinen was significantly reduced.
Trulli also had problems with his pit stop and so the duel for sixth place between Button and Frentzen developed. At the front, Schumacher was unable to break away from Häkkinen and the two drivers were within a second for several laps. Behind the two, Barrichello, in contrast to Coulthard in the first section, tried not to drive past Ralf Schumacher. The top positions remained unchanged until the 39th lap. First Coulthard made his stop and managed to overtake the drivers Ralf Schumacher and Barrichello who were ahead of him. The two drivers pitted a lap later and Barrichello did not improve his position after the stop. Behind the first five drivers, Button managed to drive past Frentzen and pull away from him. In the 41st lap, Michael Schumacher and Häkkinen pitted at the same time. Schumacher's pit crew struggled at his stop, which lasted 17 seconds. Häkkinen took over the lead.
Schumacher was slower after the pit stop. Häkkinen broke away from him clearly and Coulthard reduced the gap to him. After Coulthard caught up with Michael Schumacher on lap 46, he managed to overtake his opponent one lap later. Michael Schumacher fell further behind and was put under pressure in the 51st by his brother Ralf Schumacher. Michael blocked his brother who was trying to overtake and they both lost some time. Barrichello took advantage of the situation and passed both of them. A little later Ralf Schumacher also managed to overtake his brother. Michael Schumacher then made another pit stop and had his tires replaced. The left rear tire had lost air and was therefore responsible for Schumacher's loss of performance. With two laps to go, the sixth-placed Button retired with engine failure.
Häkkinen finally managed to claim his first win of the season. With Coulthard in second place, McLaren scored a double victory. It was Häkkinen's third win in a row and Coulthard also finished second in Spain for the third time in a row. Barrichello completed the podium. The other points went to Ralf and Michael Schumacher and Frentzen.
In the world championship, Häkkinen made up more points on Schumacher. In the constructors' world championship, McLaren-Mercedes shortened the gap to Ferrari significantly.
