The 1975 Spanish Grand Prix took place on April 27 at the Circuit de Montjuïc in Barcelona and was the fourth race of the 1975 World Automobile Championship .
Reports
background
Almost two months after the South African Grand Prix , the Spanish GP was on the program, which, in accordance with the annual change with the Circuito Permanente del Jarama race track, was to take place again this year on the temporary race course at Montjuïc in Barcelona.
In the meantime, two Formula 1 races that were not part of the World Championship had taken place. Tom Pryce took this opportunity to prove the Shadow DN5's competitiveness by winning the Race of Champions at Brands Hatch . The International Trophy at Silverstone was Niki Lauda with the new Ferrari 312T decide for themselves.
The team of Frank Williams stepped up to a new car and a new driver in Spain. Because Jacques Laffite was taking part in a Formula 2 race taking place at the same time on the Nürburgring , Tony Brise had the chance to make his Grand Prix debut. There were also two other debutants that weekend, Alan Jones , who raced in a private Hesketh , and Roelof Wunderink , who brought in a new main sponsor for Ensign Racing , enabling the team to make their first appearance in the 1975 season has been.
Graham Hill was represented in his own team by François Migault . This drove the second car, now officially called " Hill GH1 ", alongside regular driver Rolf Stommelen , which means that the previous Lola customer team was finally considered an independent factory team called " Embassy Hill ".
training
Right at the beginning of the weekend it was found that the guardrails of the temporary race track had not been adequately fixed and that the other preparations with regard to safety did not meet the usual standards. The GPDA drivers' association , under the leadership of the reigning world champion Emerson Fittipaldi , decided to strike the Grand Prix.
Of the regular drivers, only Jacky Ickx , who was not a member of the GPDA, took part in the first training. Apart from him, only Vittorio Brambilla drove a timed lap, which he however deliberately completed slowly. The organizers then promised to improve the security measures over the course of the following night. In order to make this possible in the short term, mechanics of the racing teams were called in to help.
On the second day of training, the drivers were still not satisfied with the result of the work and continued to boycott the training. Besides Ickx, only Bob Evans and newcomer Roelof Wunderink completed official training rounds on Saturday morning . The organizer then threatened to confiscate all Formula 1 equipment that was in the Estadi Olímpic de Montjuïc , which had been converted into a paddock , if the drivers continued to refuse to start training. When the CSI announced that the safety precautions were sufficient, the teams gave in and all pilots took part in the qualification. Only Emerson Fittipaldi remained consistent by only completing three deliberately slow laps and refusing to take part in the race.
The two Ferrari drivers Niki Lauda and Clay Regazzoni qualified for the front row. James Hunt shared the second row with Mario Andretti . Vittorio Brambilla and John Watson followed . Due to the shortened training time, there were some unfamiliar placements. For example, Jody Scheckter on Tyrrell , who is one of the favorites, and the two Brabham from Carlos Reutemann and Carlos Pace only qualified for places 13, 14 and 15.
run
Shortly after the start, Brambilla tried to overtake Andretti, who started directly in front of him. The two collided, whereupon Andretti crashed into the rear of Lauda's Ferrari. He retired after being pushed into the side of Regazzoni's car. Although he made his way into the pits and restarted the race after a repair stop, he was hopelessly behind. This put Hunt in the top position ahead of Andretti, Watson, Stommelen, Brambilla and Pace.
For three other pilots the race ended after only one lap, with Wilson Fittipaldi and Arturo Merzario deliberately giving up to demonstrate their protest to the organizers. Patrick Depailler , however, retired due to a defective suspension.
On the fourth lap, Jody Scheckter's car had an engine failure, which caused oil to get onto the track. As a result, Alan Jones and Penske pilot Mark Donohue had an accident at this point. They were followed three laps later by James Hunt. Andretti led ahead of Watson and Stommelen. In the course of the following laps, Watson fell behind due to handling problems and Andretti was eliminated due to a suspension damage. As a result, Rolf Stommelen took on the leading position ahead of Carlos Pace, Ronnie Peterson , Jochen Mass and Jacky Ickx. Peterson was eliminated in the 24th lap in the course of an unsuccessful lapping maneuver against François Migault.
Two laps later, the rear wing of the leading Stommelen's car broke. He hit the guardrail in an uncontrolled manner and was thrown back onto the track. Then the immediately following pace had to evade to avoid a collision. In the course of this he had an accident while Stommelen's car touched the guardrails on the opposite side of the road and rolled over them. Five spectators standing there died and Stommelen himself suffered serious injuries. The organizers, overwhelmed by this chaotic situation, did not make the decision to abandon the race until four laps later. In the meantime, Jacky Ickx had been overtaken by Jochen Mass, who achieved his first and only Grand Prix victory. Jean-Pierre Jarier crossed the finish line in third but was given a time penalty because he had overtaken Reutemann under yellow flags.
As less than half of the planned race distance had been completed at the time of the cancellation, the drivers in the first six places received only half the number of points for the first time in the history of Formula 1. Among them was Lella Lombardi , who was sixth and received 0.5 points. To date, this is the only point a woman has placed in Formula 1.
The decision of Emerson Fittipaldi, who had already left, ultimately turned out to be the right one. As a consequence of the events, there has not been a Formula 1 race on this racetrack since then.
