Qualifying
The qualifying consisted of three parts with a net running time of 45 minutes. In the first qualifying segment (Q1), the drivers had 18 minutes to qualify for the race. All drivers who achieved a time in the first section that was a maximum of 107 percent of the fastest lap time qualified for the Grand Prix. The best 15 drivers reached the next part. Vettel was fastest. Hartley was unable to participate in qualifying after his accident and did not qualify for the Grand Prix. Besides him, the Williams drivers, Ericsson and Hulkenberg retired.
The second section (Q2) lasted 15 minutes. The ten fastest pilots qualified for the third part of qualifying. The Ferrari, Mercedes, Red Bull and Haas drivers drove their fastest lap on the soft mix, all others on supersoft . Vettel was again fastest. The Force India drivers, Charles Leclerc , Gasly and Vandoorne were eliminated.
The final section (Q3) lasted twelve minutes, during which the first ten starting positions were awarded. Hamilton set the best time with a lap time of 1: 16.173 minutes ahead of Bottas and Vettel. It was Hamilton's 74th pole position in the Formula 1 World Championship and the fastest lap time ever on this track.
Sirotkin was moved three places back after causing a collision during the race in Azerbaijan.
run
The race lasted 66 laps.
Hamilton stayed in the lead at the start, Vettel passed Bottas on the outside when braking into the first corner. Magnussen made a driving error in the third corner, so that Grosjean, who was immediately behind him, lost control of his vehicle and spun while trying to avoid a collision. Grosjean tried to intercept the vehicle at full throttle and turn it in the right direction. Because of the smoke caused by the spinning rear tires, the pilots behind them were unable to see, and the Haas drove across the track. Hulkenberg and Gasly did not manage to evade, both retired with broken suspension. The race was over for Grosjean too. He was penalized with a three places on the grid in the following race, and he received two penalty points.
The race management sent the safety car out onto the track to rescue the vehicles . Hamilton led ahead of Vettel, Bottas, Raikkonen, Verstappen, Ricciardo, Magnussen, Sainz, Leclerc and Ocon.
The race was reopened on the sixth lap. Vandoorne received a five-second time penalty for having left the track on the first lap and driving back in an unsafe manner. Hamilton took the lead, Vettel drove just ahead of Bottas. There were no fights or changes of position behind this either.
On the 17th lap, Vettel was the first pilot from the leading group to pit and switched to the medium mix. Two laps later, Bottas also switched to Medium and came back on the track immediately behind Vettel and Magnussen. On lap 25, Raikkonen suddenly slowed down, pitted and gave up the race. At the end of the lap, Hamilton also switched to medium , coming back around two seconds behind Verstappen. Ocon switched to medium on lap 29 , falling back to the bottom of the field due to a problem with the attachment of the left rear tire. On laps 32 to 34, Magnussen, Ricciardo and Verstappen switched to Medium one after the other , so that all the drivers from the leading group had made one pit stop.
On the 41st lap, Ocon parked his vehicle on the edge of the track. The race management called a virtual safety car phase so that the vehicle could be recovered. Vettel used this to switch to medium again . Since there was a problem changing tires, he not only fell behind Bottas, but also behind Verstappen. Shortly afterwards, Verstappen hit the Williams von Stroll, who was about to be lapped, and damaged his front wing. However, he did not pit, but ended the race with the damaged vehicle.
The race was reopened on lap 43. Shortly afterwards, Alonso passed Leclerc and was now eighth. Vettel was unable to take advantage of his fresh tires and put Verstappen under pressure despite the damage to his vehicle. On the 47th lap, Vandoorne rolled out and parked his vehicle on the edge of the track. It was the first McLaren retirement of the season. Pérez overtook Leclerc on lap 59.
Hamilton won the race ahead of Bottas and Verstappen. It was the 64th victory for Hamilton in the Formula 1 World Championship, including the second of the season. It was also the 41st victory that Hamilton achieved from pole position, making him the sole record holder. Bottas achieved his third podium finish of the season, finishing second three times. Verstappen stood on the podium for the first time since his victory at the 2017 Mexican Grand Prix . The remaining points were placed by Vettel, Ricciardo, Magnussen, Sainz, Alonso, Pérez and Leclerc.
Hamilton increased his lead over Vettel in the overall standings, Bottas was now third. In the constructors' championship, Mercedes took the lead from Ferrari and Red Bull Racing.
