The Sauber C37 is the Formula 1 - racing car of Sauber for the Formula 1 2018 World Cup . It is the team's 26th Formula 1 car. It was presented to the public online on February 20, 2018.

As with all Sauber vehicles, the name of the car is composed of the C for Christiane, the wife of team founder Peter Sauber , followed by a consecutive number.

Technology and development

Like all Formula 1 vehicles of 2018, the Sauber C37 is a rear-wheel drive monoposto with a monocoque made of carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) . In addition to the monocoque, many other parts of the vehicle, including the body parts and the steering wheel, are made of CFRP. The brake discs are also made from a heat-resistant carbon fiber reinforced composite material.

The C37 is the successor to the C36 . Although the technical regulations remained largely stable for the 2018 season, the vehicle is largely a new development.

The C37 is driven by a in the center of the vehicle -mounted 1.6 liter V-6 engine of Ferrari with a turbocharger and a 120  kW strong electric motor , so it is a hybrid electric vehicle . The car's sequential gearbox has eight gears and is supplied by Ferrari. The gear change is triggered by paddles on the steering wheel. The vehicle has only two pedals, an accelerator pedal (right) and a brake pedal (left). Just like many other functions, the clutch , which is only used when starting from a standstill, is operated via a lever on the steering wheel.

The total width of the vehicle is 2000 mm, the width between the front and rear axles 1600 mm, the height 950 mm. The front wing has a width of 1800 mm, the rear wing of 950 mm and a height of 800 mm. The diffuser has a total height of 175 mm and a width of 1050 mm. The car is equipped with 305 mm wide front tires and 405 mm wide rear tires from the standard supplier Pirelli , which are mounted on 13-inch wheels from OZ Racing . The wheelbase of the C37 is longer than that of the previous model.

Like all Formula 1 vehicles since 2011 , the C37 has a Drag Reduction System (DRS) that reduces the drag of the vehicle on the straights by flattening part of the rear wing if it is allowed to be used. The DRS is also activated with a switch on the steering wheel of the car.

Unlike its predecessor, the C37 is equipped with the Halo system , which provides additional protection for the driver's head. This system increases the weight of the vehicle to 733 kg. The Halo system is provided with two long wing profiles that are supposed to calm the air flow. The eye-catching fin on the engine cover that the previous model had is missing due to a change in the technical regulations.

The nose of the vehicle is particularly noticeable, with two air inlets on the side. In addition, the largest opening of the multi-part air inlet above the cockpit has been moved to the rear so as not to be influenced by the air turbulence caused by the Halo system.

Painting and sponsorship

The Sauber C37 is mainly painted in white and dark red.

Alfa Romeo , Claro, a brand name in several Latin American states for América Móvil's cellular networks and watch manufacturer Richard Mille advertise on the vehicle.

driver

In the 2018 season, Sauber will compete with drivers Marcus Ericsson and Charles Leclerc . Leclerc makes his debut in the Formula 1 World Championship as the successor to Pascal Wehrlein .
