The Alfa Romeo Racing C38 is the Formula 1 - racing cars from Alfa Romeo Racing for the Formula 1 World Championship 2019 . It is the 27th Sauber Formula 1 car and the first to be registered as Alfa Romeo Racing . It was presented to the public on February 18, 2019 at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya .

Since the renaming of the team is purely a title sponsorship, the previous nomenclature will be continued when naming the car . As with all Sauber vehicles, the designation is composed of the C for Christiane, the wife of team founder Peter Sauber , followed by a consecutive number.

Technology and development

Like all Formula 1 vehicles of 2019, the C38 is a rear-wheel drive monoposto with a monocoque made of carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) . In addition to the monocoque, many other parts of the vehicle, including the body parts and the steering wheel, are made of CFRP. The brake discs are also made from a composite material reinforced with carbon fibers.

The C38 is the successor to the Sauber C37 . Since the technical regulations for the 2019 season remained largely stable, the vehicle is largely a further development.

The C38 is driven by a in the center of the vehicle -mounted 1.6 liter V-6 engine of Ferrari with a turbocharger and a 120  kW strong electric motor , so it is a hybrid electric vehicle . The force transmits a sequential with paddle shifters operated eight-speed transmission of Ferrari. The vehicle has only two pedals, an accelerator pedal (right) and a brake pedal (left). Just like many other functions, the clutch , which is only used when starting from a standstill, is operated via a lever on the steering wheel.

The total width of the vehicle is 2000 mm, the width between the front and rear axles 1600 mm, the height 950 mm. The front wing has a width of 2000 mm, the rear wing of 1050 mm and a height of 820 mm. The diffuser has a total height of 175 mm and a width of 1050 mm. The car is equipped with 305 mm wide front tires and 405 mm wide rear tires from the standard supplier Pirelli , which are mounted on 13-inch wheels from OZ Racing .

Like all Formula 1 vehicles since 2011 , the C38 has a Drag Reduction System (DRS), which reduces the drag of the vehicle on the straights by flattening part of the rear wing if it is allowed to be used. The DRS is also activated with a switch on the steering wheel of the car.

The C38 is equipped with the Halo system , which provides additional protection for the driver's head.

Painting and sponsorship

The C38 is mainly painted in white and dark red.

It advertise Alfa Romeo , Claro (a brand name in several Latin American countries for mobile networks of America Movil ), Magneti Marelli , Pirelli, watchmaker Richard Mille , Royal Dutch Shell and Singha on the vehicle.

driver

Alfa Romeo Racing will compete with the driver pairing Kimi Räikkönen and Antonio Giovinazzi in the 2019 season . Räikkönen changes from Ferrari to Alfa Romeo Racing and replaces Charles Leclerc , who in turn changes to Ferrari, Giovinazzi is contesting his first season as a regular driver in the Formula 1 World Championship and replaces Marcus Ericsson , who remains with the team as test and reserve driver.
