After finishing school at the monastery of Our Lady in Magdeburg, Köhler studied law in Halle . From 1799 he worked in Magdeburg as an auscultator and trainee lawyer, afterwards from 1802 as a travel agent for the organizational commission in Paderborn , shortly afterwards he accepted a position as mayor of justice for Beverungen and bailiff in Herstelle . On December 20, 1804, he married Louise Gethmann (1783–1830), daughter of the Paderborn procurator Heinrich Gethmann (1747–1815). On March 1, 1808, Köhler was appointed to the Westphalian civil tribunal judge in Neuhaldensleben.

Role in the liberation wars

The turmoil of the war had made it impossible to maintain the administrative authorities responsible for Köhler, so that he was forced to judge legal cases in question as a person rather than as an institution. His willingness to also be active as a soldier made him organize a civil guard with himself at the head, which defended the city against plundering French columns coming from Magdeburg. Shortly thereafter, Köhler joined the fourth Landwehr Infantry Regiment as a captain and took part in several military campaigns in 1815 and also in 1817, where he stood out for his mediation in diplomatic missions.

Later years

After the peace, Köhler resigned in the judicial service, because of the services he had acquired during the war, he was now the first assessor of the newly established Halberstadt Higher Regional Court . Friedrich Wilhelm III. von Prussia awarded him the General Decoration of Honor 1st Class in 1821 . In addition to his legal activities, Köhler helped reorganize the Landwehr and, as a major, led a company in the 27th Landwehr Regiment. As early as 1822, however, he resigned because of general sickness.

Others

Köhler was also interested in music, as evidenced by a letter to court conductor Louis Spohr from 1826. Köhler's daughter Friederike Auguste Antoinette Adelheid (1808–1846) married the superintendent in Ziesar, Carl Gustav Schulze (1802–1867). His granddaughter Dorothea Marie Louise Adele Schulze (1831–1912) became the second wife of the Prince Educator Karl Luppe .
