The Sauber C22 was a Formula 1 , the race car Sauber Motorsport in 2003 in the Formula 1 began World Championship.
Development history and technology
In 2003, too, Peter Sauber's team received exclusive Formula 1 customer engines from Scuderia Ferrari . As in the previous year, the unit was branded as a sponsorship reason for the Petronas V10. This time with the type designation 03A. The car designed by Willy Rampf was a far-reaching further development of the C21 .
The driver pairing formed the two Germans Heinz-Harald Frentzen and Nick Heidfeld . Felipe Massa had left the team for a year and took over test work at Ferrari.
Racing history
The C22 made its racing debut at the Australian Grand Prix in March 2003. In qualifying practice, Heinz-Harald Frentzen set the fourth fastest time in 1: 28.274 minutes and was only a second slower than Michael Schumacher in the Ferrari F2002 . Nick Heidfeld qualified his C22 in seventh place. Frentzen finished the race in sixth, while Heidfeld retired with a defective front suspension. In the second race of the season, the Malaysian Grand Prix , which ended with the first Grand Prix victory of the Finn Kimi Räikkönen in the McLaren MP4-17D , both C22s finished. Nick Heidfeld finished the race in eighth and thus scored his first world championship point of the season. Frentzen finished one place behind in ninth place.
In the third race of the season, the Brazilian Grand Prix , there were again points for Sauber. The race was stopped after serious accidents by Mark Webber and Fernando Alonso on the home stretch and ended with another debut victory by Giancarlo Fisichella in the Jordan EJ13 ; Frentzen was classified fifth.
These successes at the beginning of the year gave Sauber hope for a strong season, but over the course of the summer races the C22 slipped further and further into the lower midfield, both in practice and in the races. It was not until the penultimate race of the year, the US Grand Prix , that the C22 made it back to the top. Heinz-Harald Frentzen, who had even led one lap, finished third and was on the podium; Nick Heidfeld was fifth.
In the 2003 constructors' championship, Sauber finished sixth overall with 19 points.
