Willy Rampf

Wilhelm "Willy" Rampf (born June 20, 1953 in Maria Thalheim ) is a German engineer.

Career

Willy Rampf studied vehicle engineering at the Munich University of Applied Sciences and worked as a development engineer at BMW in Munich in 1979 . From 1989 to 1993 Willy Rampf worked for BMW in South Africa, where he came into contact with Formula 1 for the first time . Before that, Rampf was only interested in motorcycling.

1993 was Peter Sauber in Kyalami with his own team Sauber Formula 1 debut. Willy Rampf was invited to this race. Six months later, Willy Rampf signed a contract with Peter Sauber as a racing engineer .

Willy Rampf was responsible for the driver Heinz-Harald Frentzen for three years and in the 1997 season for the drivers Nicola Larini , Norberto Fontana and Gianni Morbidelli as a racing engineer. After four years in Formula 1, he returned to BMW.

In Munich he headed the BMW motorcycle project for the Paris-Dakar rally . Rampf was successful again: BMW driver Richard Sainct won the legendary desert rally with ease. At the end of 1999, Willy Rampf started his second career at Sauber-Petronas , where he took over the position of Technical Director on April 1, 2000 and was responsible for defining the vehicle concept, design, development and vehicle use on the racetrack. Willy Rampf was technical director until April 2010; he was succeeded by James Key . Between August 2011 and August 2016 he held the position of Technical Director at Volkswagen Motorsport , where he was primarily responsible for the development of the WRC car. The VW Polo R WRC won the world rally championship titles between 2013 and 2016 with driver Sébastien Ogier and co-driver Julien Ingrassia . At the same time, VW secured the manufacturer's title during these years. Willy Rampf returned to VW as technical advisor for the 2018 Pikes Peak race . On June 24, 2018 Romain Dumas set a course record on Pikes Peak in the VW ID R Pikes Peak with 7: 57.148 minutes.
