James Key

James Key (born January 14, 1972 ) is a British engineer in Formula 1 .

education

James Key studied mechanical engineering at the University of Nottingham and graduated there in 1996. Lotus Engineering provided financial support for his studies.

Career

James Key began his racing career at Lotus , where he was involved in the GT program. In 1998 he joined the Jordan Grand Prix as a data engineer and later became a race engineer for Takuma Satō . Shortly after Midland F1 Racing took over the Jordan team in 2005, he became technical director there. At that time he was one of the youngest technical directors in Formula 1. Even after the team was taken over by Spyker F1 in 2006 and then by Force India in 2008, he kept his position in the team. In April 2010 he replaced Willy Rampf as technical director at Sauber .

Key left Sauber in January 2012. From September 2012 to February 2019 he was Technical Director of the Italian Formula 1 team Scuderia Toro Rosso . Key has been working in the same role for McLaren since March 2019 .
