The 2003 Formula 1 World Championship was the 54th season of the Formula 1 World Championship . It was held over 16 races between March 9th and October 12th.
The 2003 season was described as the most exciting season in a long time. Up to two races before the end of the World Championship, three drivers still had the opportunity to win the World Championship. Michael Schumacher finally won his 6th driver title. Ferrari won the Constructors Championship for the 5th time in a row.
Changes in 2003
Regulations
Starting this season, not only the six best placed drivers and teams will receive points per race, but the best eight. Placements 1 to 8 are rewarded with 10, 8, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2 and 1 points. This regulation was introduced to prevent the championship from being decided early in the season, as a driver can gain comparatively few championship points by winning. On the other hand, it took into account the fact that cars had become more and more reliable. Inferior teams often only had a chance to score points due to the failure of the top vehicles.
First tested at the US Grand Prix in 2002 , it was now mandatory for every driver to use the new HANS system at every official session.
Teams
Arrows was no longer able to contest further races in the middle of the 2002 season, and did not take part in 2003 either. The field of participants was thus reduced to 20 vehicles.
Engines
Jordan and Minardi switched engine partners and purchased Ford customer engines that were largely identical to the Cosworth engines used by the Jaguar team . With these changes, on the one hand the name Asiatech (Minardi) disappeared from Formula 1 after two seasons, while on the other hand the previous Jordan supplier Honda now fully concentrated on the BAR team.
Racetracks
The Belgian Grand Prix was not held this season, so the number of season races was reduced to 16.
driver
The 2003 season started with some changes in the team's driver line-up. The teams Minardi, Jaguar and Toyota changed all drivers.
Fernando Alonso went from a test driver to a regular driver at Renault as a replacement for Jenson Button , Button replaced Olivier Panis at BAR, and Panis switched to Toyota. The second new Toyota driver was Cristiano da Matta , replacing both Mika Salo and Allan McNish . McNish became a test driver at Renault.
Felipe Massa left Sauber and became a test driver for Ferrari, Massa's place at Sauber was occupied by Heinz-Harald Frentzen . Takuma Satō left the Jordan team and became a test driver at BAR, his position at Jordan was taken by Ralph Firman .
At Minardi, Alex Yoong was replaced by Jos Verstappen and Mark Webber by Justin Wilson , Webber took Eddie Irvine 's place last year at Jaguar, Antonio Pizzonia also replaced Pedro de la Rosa there .
During the current season there were further changes in the field of drivers: At Jaguar Antonio Pizzonia was replaced by Justin Wilson after the race in Great Britain. Nicolas Kiesa made his debut for Wilson at Minardi . In addition, at Jordan Ralph Firman was replaced by Zsolt Baumgartner for two races , and Williams test driver Marc Gené replaced the injured Ralf Schumacher at the race in Italy . Finally, at BAR Jacques Villeneuve was dismissed before the last race of the season, which Takuma Sato then denied for him.

The Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne ( Australia ) took place on March 9, 2003 and went over 58 laps of 5.303 km over a total of 307.574 km.
Michael Schumacher secured the first pole position of the season ahead of Barrichello and Montoya. Since the track was wet at the start of the race, the choice of tires was crucial for the start. Most of the drivers started with rain tires, but had to make their first pit stop shortly after the start because the track quickly became drier.
Schumacher forgave the lead due to a driving error in which he lost the side wind deflectors of his car. Because of the damage, he had to make an unscheduled pit stop. After Montoya, who was then in the lead, also made a driving error, David Coulthard was able to win the race. Kimi Räikkönen drove the fastest race lap with 1: 27.724 minutes.
Barrichello was eliminated on the sixth lap due to a driving error. Heidfeld dropped out on lap 21 due to a break in the right front suspension. Since Fisichella, Pizzonia, Panis, Wilson, Webber, Matta and Firman could not finish the race, only 11 riders crossed the finish line.
Since David Coulthard started in Formula 1 up to and including 2008, it was by no means foreseeable at this point that this would be his last victory.

The Malaysian Grand Prix in Kuala Lumpur took place on March 23, 2003 and went over 56 laps of 5.543 km over a total of 310.408 km.
Alonso had reached pole position in qualifying ahead of Trulli and Michael Schumacher. Schumacher tried to overtake Trulli in the first corner after the start and collided with him. Since the car was damaged, he had to make an unscheduled pit stop. He also received a penalty from the race management for causing the accident and therefore had to drive through the pit lane again. Although he was able to set the fastest race lap with 1: 36.412 minutes, in the end result it was only enough for him to finish 6th.
Raikkonen took the lead on lap 15 and didn't give the competition a chance due to a faultless race. He won with a clear lead over Barrichello and took the lead in the drivers' championship with his first victory in Formula 1.
Minardi drew attention to itself with a protest against the Iraq war that started three days before the race : the cars were given stickers with the slogan Malaysia for Peace .

The Brazilian Grand Prix in São Paulo took place on April 6, 2003. As planned, the distance to be driven would have been 71 laps of 4.309 km each. However, the race was stopped after 54 laps, so the total distance was 232.686 km.
The route was partially flooded by heavy rain. This led to numerous accidents and failures among the drivers. The fastest in training Rubens Barrichello (1: 13,807 minutes) led in his home Grand Prix and also drove the fastest lap of the race in 1: 22,032 minutes, but had to park his car with an empty tank on lap 46. Michael Schumacher slipped on a puddle on lap 27, crashed into a pile of tires and had to end the race. This was Schumacher's first failure since the 2001 German Grand Prix . A total of ten of the 20 participating drivers had already been eliminated by the 50th lap.
During the 56th lap, the race management stopped the race after another serious accident. At the start of the start and finish straight, Mark Webber crashed into the boundary wall. Shortly afterwards, Alonso's Renault got out of control when it was unable to avoid one of the jaguar's torn wheels. Due to the abandonment of the race, Fisichella finally drove into the pit lane, where his car suffered an engine failure and caught fire; due to the premature end of the race, however, this was irrelevant for the rating.
The regulations stipulated that in the event of a race being canceled, the order of the drivers two laps before the cancellation was decisive. Due to a computer error, the race management had contradicting information about the exact point in time Fisichella crossed the finish line and finally mistakenly assumed that he was still on the 55th lap when the race was abandoned. This made the stand on lap 53 the official result of the race and therefore Raikkonen declared the winner. The next day, however, it turned out that Fisichella had already started the 56th round and thus the order in the 54th round was decisive. In this Fisichella was already in the lead and was subsequently declared the winner.
It was not until 2016 that it became known that soapy liquids were being washed out at irregular intervals at the bend where most drivers turned, so that the asphalt became slippery at this point.

The Grand Prix of San Marino in Imola took place on April 20, 2003 and went over 62 laps of 4.933 km over a total of 305.609 km.
In qualifying, Michael Schumacher reached pole position in front of his brother Ralf and his team-mate Barrichello. Elisabeth Schumacher, the mother of Michael and Ralf, died in the early morning hours of April 20th. Nevertheless, the brothers decided to drive the race. Ralf Schumacher had the better start and took the lead. Ralf was able to defend the lead until his first pit stop on lap 16. Since Michael’s stop a short time later was shorter, he was able to overtake his brother.
In contrast to their rivals, the McLaren-Mercedes drivers Raikkonen and Coulthard pursued a strategy with only two pit stops. Michael Schumacher was able to regain the lead over Räikkönen with two very short further stops and in the last race with the Ferrari F2002 from the previous year he achieved not only the fastest race lap of 1: 22.491 minutes but also his first win of the season.

In qualifying, the two Ferrari drivers took the front row seats. Renault drivers Alonso and Trulli were able to place themselves behind Schumacher and Barrichello.
Schumacher won the race in the new Ferrari F2003-GA ahead of Alonso, while the McLaren-Mercedes team could not bring a driver to the finish due to the accidents of Raikkonen with Pizzonia at the start and Coulthard with Button in the 17th lap.
The Williams-BMW drivers Montoya and Ralf Schumacher could not achieve the podium places, even though, unlike the Ferrari and Renault drivers, they had a two-stop strategy. Barrichello drove the fastest race lap with 1: 20.143 minutes.

The Austrian Grand Prix in Spielberg took place on May 18, 2003 and went over 69 laps over a total of 298.494 km.
The start of the race had to be canceled twice due to technical problems with the Toyota driver da Matta. This reduced the scheduled race distance from 71 to 69 laps.
During the race it started to rain which made the road very slippery. Nevertheless, an accident was the only cause of the failure of Frentzen. This accident happened on the first lap when the track was still dry. The failures of the drivers Verstappen, Panis, Montoya, Alonso, Heidfeld and Fisichella were all due to technical defects.
At Michael Schumacher's first pit stop, there was a problem with refueling, as a result of which the car caught fire. The mechanics were able to extinguish the fire without anyone being injured, but Schumacher lost valuable time and lost the lead. Schumacher was still able to win the race and also drove the fastest race lap with 1: 08.337 minutes.

The Monaco Grand Prix in Monte Carlo took place on June 1, 2003 and ran over 78 laps over a total of 260.520 km.
Montoya was able to convert his third starting place behind Ralf Schumacher and Räikkönen into the second Grand Prix victory of his career. For Williams it was the first win since the Malaysia Grand Prix in 2002 .
At the start, Schumacher was able to defend the lead without any problems. The fact that he had to make a pit stop as the first driver in the leading group became a disadvantage, as Montoya was able to use this time to build such a large gap that he was still in the lead after his pit stop. Since Raikkonen and Michael Schumacher also succeeded in a similar approach, Ralf Schumacher finally only achieved 4th place.
Raikkonen achieved the fastest race lap with 1: 14.545 minutes. Despite the failures of Villeneuve, Wilson, Verstappen, Webber, Pizzonia and Frentzen, 13 of the 19 riders who started made it to the finish.

The Williams-BMW drivers Ralf Schumacher and Montoya started the race from the front row. Räikkönen had to start from the pit lane due to a driving error in qualifying. He was able to improve by a few places in the race and finally finished sixth. His team-mate Coulthard, like the two Sauber drivers Frentzen and Heidfeld, was out due to technical problems.
At the end of the first lap, a lathe operator from Montoya led to a successful overhaul by Michael Schumacher and Alonso. Ralf Schumacher made his first refueling stop one lap before his brother. Since Michael Schumacher was able to gain a certain lead on this lap, this enabled him to overtake. Despite later braking problems on the Ferrari, he was able to save the lead right through to the finish.

However, they were able to convert these starting positions into podium places one and two. Ralf Schumacher drove flawlessly and was able to overtake his brother at the start. An engine failure by Raikkonen on the 25th lap gave him the lead that he was able to keep until the finish line. Raikkonen had previously achieved the fastest race lap with 1: 32.621 minutes.
Montoya was able to achieve his podium in a tough duel against Michael Schumacher. The drive almost ended in a collision for both of them shortly before the end, but only Schumacher turned off the track and was pushed back onto the road by the marshals.

The first three starting positions were occupied by Rubens Barrichello , Juan Pablo Montoya and Cristiano da Matta . Michael Schumacher started from 14th place, Kimi Räikkönen from 8th place. Barrichello was overtaken by Montoya on the first lap. Alonso also got very close to him.
In the sixth lap, Michael Schumacher collided with Takuma Satō and then had to pick up a new front spoiler in the pit. As a result, he fell back to last place. Montoya had to end the race early after a technical defect on the ninth lap.
Since Raikkonen did not get beyond second place and Schumacher also achieved a world championship point with eighth place, Schumacher was able to secure the title of the drivers’s world championship with a two point lead.
