The 2007 Formula 1 World Championship was the 58th season of the Formula 1 World Championship . It was held over 17 races in the period from March 18th to October 21st. Kimi Raikkonen became world champion for the first and so far only time, Ferrari won the constructors' championship .
Changes in 2007
Racetracks
In addition to several changes to the regulations, only 17 instead of 18 Grand Prix races took place in the 2007 season. The European Grand Prix at the Nürburgring and the German Grand Prix at the Hockenheimring were held alternately every year. In 2007 the European Grand Prix took place, in 2008 the German Grand Prix. The San Marino Grand Prix has been removed from the racing calendar. The Belgian Grand Prix , on the other hand, took place again after a one-year break due to construction work that was completed in May 2007. In addition, the Japanese Grand Prix has been moved from Suzuka to the Fuji track , which has been modernized.
Regulations
One of the biggest changes to the regulations for the 2007 season was that the Friday sessions were extended from 60 minutes to 90 minutes. In the sessions on Friday, however, only two vehicles were allowed to be used, which the regular drivers had to share with a Friday test driver. Additional engines that did not fall under the two-race rule were also allowed to be used here.
The FIA determined that the FIA electronics could now be used in every race and in every test. In addition, it was stipulated that if the engine was changed prematurely, the driver would be moved back ten starting positions and if the gearbox was changed prematurely, five starting positions would be moved back. In addition, the Formula 1 teams were only allowed to change the gear ratio once on each race weekend.
Since nothing could be changed on the engines from 2007 to 2010, the two-race rule only applied to Saturday and Sunday of a racing weekend. Any engine could be used on Friday. The aim was to ensure that there was more activity on the racetrack on the Fridays of the respective Grand Prix.
In the event of a safety car phase, the racing drivers were not allowed to come into the pits until all drivers had caught up with the safety car. However, lapped drivers were able to overtake the rest of the field and the safety car before the restart, lap back and catch up to the end of the field again. Thus there were no more stragglers between direct opponents at the restart.
For the tire monopoly Bridgestone it was immediately clear that all Formula 1 teams had to drive with the same material. Bridgestone was only allowed to offer two types of tires per race weekend. With regard to rain tires, each driver was now allowed to use up to 14 sets of tires, but only 10 on Saturday and Sunday.
Both a set of the soft and one of the hard tires had to be used during a race. In order to make this visible to the audience, one of the grooves had to be marked in white on soft tires. At the start of the season, the tire was only marked with a barely recognizable point.
driver
Fernando Alonso moved to McLaren-Mercedes after five years at Renault . Lewis Hamilton became the second regular driver in Ron Dennis' team . Juan Pablo Montoya , who drove for McLaren-Mercedes up to the US Grand Prix in 2006, switched to the NASCAR Nextel Cup , ending his Formula 1 career. Kimi Räikkönen replaced the resigned Michael Schumacher at Ferrari . Heikki Kovalainen took over Alonso's starting position at Renault .
At Williams , Mark Webber , who had switched to Red Bull Racing , was replaced as a regular driver by the previous test and reserve driver Alexander Wurz . Webber started at Red Bull in place of Christian Klien . BMW Sauber replaced Jacques Villeneuve , who was dismissed in mid-2006, with Robert Kubica . In addition, Anthony Davidson started at Super Aguri instead of Sakon Yamamoto and Adrian Sutil was signed to Spyker instead of Tiago Monteiro .

In the end, Lewis Hamilton and Nick Heidfeld, two drivers who made their pit stops immediately before the safety car phases, were in the first two places. Thanks to a one-stop strategy, Alexander Wurz, who had only started the race from 19 on the grid, was third. Anthony Davidson only wanted to pit once, but had to change the front end due to a collision with a beaver on lap 38. The race was marked by numerous accidents and was the worst race of the season. Lewis Hamilton achieved pole position in 1: 19.997 minutes for the third time in his career and started the race ahead of Kimi Raikkonen and Fernando Alonso. Nick Heidfeld was sixth as the best German-speaking driver, Nico Rosberg was twelfth and Alexander Wurz thirteenth. Ralf Schumacher, who was the most favorably qualified with sixth place on the grid, just like Adrian Sutil, Trulli, Davidson, Speed and Webber, couldn't finish the race.

The European Grand Prix at the Nürburgring took place on July 22, 2007 and covered a distance of 60 laps of 5.148 km, for a total of 308.863 km.
Kimi Räikkönen reached pole position in 1: 31.450 minutes ahead of Fernando Alonso and Felipe Massa. Lewis Hamilton suffered a serious accident at the beginning of the third qualifying session, but was still able to start the race on Sunday, albeit only from tenth on the grid.
Very heavy rain set in shortly after the start of the race. Markus Winkelhock was the only one in the Spyker to start out of the pit lane on rain tires. This surprisingly enabled him to do a few laps as the leader in his only Formula 1 Grand Prix. The rest of the field had to switch to rain tires in the pits. The route soon proved impassable due to the heavy rain. Immediately one after the other, six cars slipped into the gravel trap after the start and finish. Several other drivers also had major problems keeping the car on the road at different points along the route. As a result, the race was interrupted for 22 minutes after lap four. It was the first stop of the race since Brazil 2003. After the race resumed behind the safety car, Felipe Massa took the lead, but he had to hand this over to Fernando Alonso on lap 56, who was much better in the onset of rain and was able to overtake Massa.
Alonso won ahead of Massa and Mark Webber. Kimi Räikkönen retired early due to a technical defect. Alexander Wurz was fourth, the only German to finish was Nick Heidfeld in sixth. Massa drove the fastest race lap in 1: 32.853 minutes.
The race time was 2 hours, 6 minutes and 26.358 seconds because, according to FIA regulations (Articles 5.3 and 41.4), the timekeeping continues even during an interruption in the race, but the maximum permitted duration of the race is extended by the duration of the interruption, which is normally two hours.

Alonso set the fastest time in the third qualifying segment with a time of 1: 19.674 minutes. During his last pit stop, he blocked Hamilton for so long that he didn't have enough time for one last fast lap. With that he took Hamilton the chance to undercut his fastest time. A few hours after qualifying, Alonso was moved five starting positions back by the race management due to this hindrance. Hamilton started from pole position ahead of Heidfeld and Raikkonen. The McLaren team was also penalized by not ranking the race in the constructors' championship.
Hamilton ruled the race. Since overtaking on the Hungaroring is difficult, the starting positions and the pit stop strategy essentially determined the outcome of the race. In addition to Heidfeld, who achieved the seventh podium finish of his career with third place, Ralf Schumacher and Nico Rosberg were also able to collect championship points. Alexander Wurz reached 14th place, Sebastian Vettel was 16th in his first race for Toro Rosso and Adrian Sutil reached 17th place. The fastest race lap went to Raikkonen in 1: 20.047 minutes.

After the 19th race lap, the safety car left the track and the race was cleared.
Alonso retired on lap 42 after an accident caused by aquaplaning. In the second safety car phase that followed, Vettel, who had been third up to that point, collided with Webber, who had placed second. As a result, both drivers had to end the race early. Räikkönen was able to achieve third place with a tactical tire change by his team-mate Massa ten laps before the end.
Hamilton completed the first hat trick of his Formula 1 career by driving the fastest race lap in 1: 28.193 minutes. Kovalainen achieved his first place on the podium with second place.
Liuzzi , who initially placed eighth, was given a 25-second time penalty after the end of the race because he had passed Sutil on the 55th lap despite the yellow flag being forbidden to overtake . As a result, Sutil reached eighth place and was able to achieve his first World Championship point.

The Chinese Grand Prix at the Shanghai International Circuit took place on October 7, 2007 and covered a distance of 56 laps of 5.451 km, for a total of 305.066 km.
Lewis Hamilton took pole position with a time of 1: 35.908 minutes ahead of Raikkonen, Massa and Alonso. The race took place in changeable weather. The route that kept drying off after showers made choosing tires difficult.
On the 32nd race lap, Hamilton, who had been leading up to that point, was pitted on worn tires when his lap times were significantly slower and Raikkonen had overtaken him. In the pit entrance he slipped into a gravel bed, had to finish the race and could not use the chance to win the title early.
Massa drove the fastest race lap in 1: 37.454 minutes. Raikkonen took his fifth win of the season ahead of Alonso in second place. The World Cup decision was thus postponed to the last race of the season in Brazil, where three drivers, Hamilton, Alonso and Raikkonen, were still fighting for the title.

The Brazilian Grand Prix at the Interlagos Autodromo José Carlos Pace took place on October 21, 2007 and covered a lap distance of 4.309 km (71 laps), for a total of 305.909 km.
Felipe Massa secured pole position with a time of 1: 11.931 minutes, ahead of World Championship leader Lewis Hamilton. Kimi Räikkönen and Fernando Alonso started the race from positions three and four. After a driving error on the first lap, Hamilton fell back to ninth place. On lap twelve, Hamilton mistakenly pressed the button for the start sequence on his steering wheel. As a result, his car changed to neutral and he had to restart the system. As a result, Hamilton's car rolled (he could neither accelerate nor shift) for about half a lap, falling back to last place. At this point, Felipe Massa was leading ahead of Kimi Räikkönen and Fernando Alonso. Hamilton was able to fight his way to seventh place, Räikkönen came back on the track after a pit stop in front of his team-mate Massa and stayed in the lead until the end of the race. Since Hamilton and Alonso each scored too few points, Kimi Raikkonen became world champion for the first time.
Kimi Räikkönen drove the fastest race lap with a time of 1: 12.445 minutes.
After the race, the FIA found that the fuel temperatures in the vehicles from BMW-Sauber and Williams-Toyota were too low. The race stewards refrained from punishing and officially confirmed the race result. McLaren-Mercedes protested this decision. However, this was rejected as inadmissible by the FIA on November 16, 2007.

1 The 2007 season was overshadowed by the so-called “espionage affair” . The McLaren team was accused of having obtained technical information and blueprints for Ferrari vehicles through industrial espionage. McLaren was then punished with the deduction of all world championship points in the constructors' championship.
Since McLaren had the points they had won at the Hungarian Grand Prix because of Alonso's handicap in qualifying anyway, the team would not have become constructors' world champions with a total of 203 points even without a penalty in the espionage affair.
