Markus Winkelhock (born June 13, 1980 in Stuttgart-Bad Cannstatt ) is a German automobile racing driver . He is the son of the racing driver Manfred Winkelhock, who died in an accident in 1985 and the nephew of Joachim and Thomas Winkelhock .
Career
Markus Winkelhock's career began in 1998 in Formula König . After two years in Formula Renault , he drove Formula 3 until 2003 . In 2004 he started for the Persson Motorsport team in an AMG - Mercedes-Benz CLK in the DTM , but then switched back to the monoposto at the end of the season, this time in the heavily motorized World Series version of Formula Renault and came third in the championship.
For 2006 Winkelhock signed a contract as a test driver with the Formula 1 team MF1 Racing . A total of four times he got into the Midland racing car at Friday training sessions and made a respectable impression.
This prompted the Midland successor team, Spyker , to sign Winkelhock as a test driver again in 2007.
In 2007 Winkelhock drove in the DTM for injured Audi driver Tom Kristensen on the EuroSpeedway and at Brands Hatch. From Mugello he replaced Adam Carroll , who switched back to the GP2 series .
On July 22, 2007 Markus Winkelhock was to replace the dismissed at Spyker Christijan Albers at European Grand Prix on the Nürburgring his debut in the Formula 1 World Championship. There he took the lead after the onset of rain on the second lap, as he was the only one who started out of the pit lane on rain tires after the introductory lap. He was able to hold this position for six laps, but fell back to 15th place after a break in the race and then had to end the race due to technical problems.
From 2008 to 2010 Winkelhock drove in the DTM for Team Rosberg with a previous year's model of the Audi A4. With 6 points he reached 12th place in the drivers' standings at the end of the season in 2008. In the following year Winkelhock was able to improve again and finished tenth in the championship with two fourth places and eleven points, ahead of Mercedes-Benz new car driver Ralf Schumacher . In 2011 Winkelhock no longer competes in the DTM as he no longer received a contract from Audi.
In 2011 and 2012 Markus Winkelhock drove in the FIA GT1 World Championship for Team Münnich Motorsport. In the 2011 season he drove a Lamborghini Murciélago LP 670 RS-V. In 2012 he became driver and team world champion in a Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT3 .
From June 26, 2012 to May 12, 2017, Markus Winkelhock held the lap record for electrically powered series vehicles on the Nürburgring Nordschleife with 8: 09.099 , set up in an Audi R8 e-tron. Afterwards, Markus Winkelhock also set the record for two consecutive laps in an electrically powered vehicle with 16: 56.969, also in an Audi R8 e-tron.
In 2017 Winkelhock won the 24-hour race on the Nordschleife of the Nürburgring in the Land Team with de Phillippi / Mies / van der Linde in an Audi R8 LMS . Just a few weeks later, he was also able to win the 24-hour race in Spa-Francorchamps, Belgium. He drove the winning R8 LMS together with Christopher Haase and Jules Gounon . It's his second success after winning in 2014.
